Should the public be allowed to vote for contest winners?

I was having a discussion with a friend, wondering if the devs should pick say 10, and then offer them to the public, pic your fave 4 or 2 or what ever and leave it up to them? should a design go purely in the basic concept of someones imagination? then the ability to design/draw?

I think they should pick a select few, such as 50 or 100 people on forums that developers feel aren't biased. If everyone had access that could lead to bribery, even if someone art was good enough to make it into the last 10.

If they were to do that it would have to be two separate polls. The panel or whatever that decides who the winners are, and the "community favorite(s)," which would be a public poll. Likely the community favorite(s) wouldn't get anything but bragging rights and maybe something down the road.

They do these things as a sort of "commission competition." Artists can put the time in and if they win they get a significant amount of money for their hard work. If not then the company doesn't have to pay them for their time. It's why stuff like this usually has less turnout despite the massive amount of great artists out there. Most artists require at least a promise of commission pay, if there's no guarantee then it could be a lot of work for absolutely no pay. And then that idea might get taken anyways months down the road when they've moved on, and never get paid for it.

I kind of feel like some people would make a bunch of throwaway accounts and vote for themselves. I’ve seen this happen in other online games and eventually the games creators had to cancel weekly contest due to some of the games users being unsportsmanlike.

    Yes.

Since the COMMUNITY are the ones that will be purchasing it.

Nah. People are too biased for that, most survivor mains would just vote for skins they think would be advantageous for them.

It'd be far easier to bribe a significant portion of 50-100 people than a significant portion of all the voters, just saying.

Yes. As long as it's not limited to the 'fog whisperers'.

Well people are the ones buying it. What good is it if BHVR loves it but everyone hates it. Then again, it is their game/passion.

The best argument I've seen against this, and the one I allign most strongly with, is that "community" voting is far more likely to be a reflection of exposure than of the artwork's actual popularity.

Entrants who are also streamers/Youtubers, for example, will have their audience voting for their entry just because it's theirs, not because it's the best, and people with the foresight (or shamelessness, depending on your perspective) to advertise their work on other platforms like Reddit, Steam, Facebook etc. will necessarily get more votes on their entry just because more people are seeing it.

Basically, popular vote is almost never a good indicator of actual quality, which is why most art competitions in real life have their true winners judged by a panel and award the "audience vote" as more of an honourary thing.

I think that they should at least make the judging criteria available to all so we can see why the cosmetics get selected. And change it slightly to make them more consistant with the character they are designing for.

I actually don't like the idea. The DBD community as a whole isn't mature enough to handle that kind of power.

No, because submissions made by already established and known community members of all types would immediately have an advantage.

Everyone can do something of course. Everyone can advertise their submission on their own, but the person with 200k subscribers on youtube or something will quite simply have more reach than a previously unknown fan.

Issue is that the community might vote for ones that devs simply cannot do in terms of complexicity and stuff like that

Devs should prepare 10, 5 of each side and let the community vote, but problem is an artist might wanna buy bots to vote on his own submission

I think it would be fine to have some sort of Community favourite category, that was purely for the bragging rights, due to how easy it is to manipulate voting. But when things like Auric Cells are being given out, I do think it should be a BHVR only vote because at the end of the day, the winning entry is representative of the game at that point.

Arranging the community to vote is not that easy, it can't be done here on the forum because people have a tendency to make alternate accounts etc and then it's just making a mockery of the competition.

For competitions such as the recent In Game cosmetic, it should be totally judged by BHVR because they know what they can put into the game, what can be done, what will work etc and at the end of the day, it is their game and they should have final say of what goes into it.
