Why do Tome challenges need to be selected?
Like, why aren't Tome challenges just things you automatically make progress toward, under the condition that you can access a given node? Why do I have to pick one single active challenge to progress toward? It would be way more user-friendly for this stuff to just increment without having to earmark anything.
This would eliminate those "oops I forgot to switch from a killer challenge to a survivor challenge before I queued" moments, and it would let us work toward multiple challenges at once, and set a more flexible road map for ourselves, as it were. Plus, it would help to curb negligent play for challenges such as Dwight the Brave, if a player feels like they have the opportunity to make progress toward other stuff, and otherwise not give up on the game due to a narrow challenge they feel they've failed.
Daily rituals effectively already work this way. If I have, say, a daily to heal 3 health states and another to repair 3 gens, I can make progress on them simultaneously. I think it would be a big improvement if Tome challenges worked the same way.

Because [BAD WORD] you, that's why.
But seriously, it does suck. Unfortunately, since it's tied to earning tiers in the Rift, I don't see them ever letting us do multiple challenges at the same time.
However, it would be nice if we could at least separately select a killer and a survivor challenge at the same time. Even better, it'd be nice if at the end of a match we could select one of the available challenges to have our progress count towards. "That match I just had, do I want to have it count towards the gen challenge or the healing challenge? Or holy crap, did I actually complete that pain in the ass Dwight challenge? Woohoo! I'll select that one!" You'd still have to go into the Archive afterward if you want to mark it as completed and accept the BP/fragments and unlock the next nodes, because otherwise you couldn't bank stuff, but it'd be soooo much more user friendly than what we have now.

To make you play more

Honestly, I think the only explanation is that they want the rift to take longer. AKA they want you to spend actual real world money to unlock more tiers on the rift. Every other game that has a set of challenges or achievements has them unlock whenever the challenge description is met, regardless of being selected. I can think of no reason other than that they want some poor schmuck to buy 50 tiers on the rift because they ran out of time and really wanted that shiny charm at tier 70
I have done the "sacrifice all 4 survivors in the basement" twice now... but never had the challenge selected :( Life is pain

This is a dumb theory. I'm gonna play because I like the game, and the challenges are going to be a long-term goal no matter what.

This would be an especially pernicious, victimizing rationale. That's like a Vegas casino level of thought. I know they are a company and they of course like money, but I have to hope their philosophy is a little better than this. The game existed for three years without this system in it, so this would be poor justification.

This would be a really good idea. It'd be a huge help with challenges that are similar but have slightly different requirements like the hiding with Dwight challenges and the totem challenges.

I definitely don't disagree with anything you've said. And that would indeed be a poor justification. I'm just struggling to find any other rationale for that design decision

I HATE IT!!!!
Apex legends just counts everything you do in every single match and fills the bar on every challenge. No need to equip every single challenge. It's a stupid design choice just to pissoff the playerbase

im guessing it’s so the rift doesnt feel very sluggish to get through
the more time you have to spend on challenges, the more fragments you’re gonna be earning

I think at the least you should be able to have one survivor challenge and one killer challenge active at once so you don't have to manually change your challenge when switching roles.

It would make things so much more easier...unfortunately BHVR doesn't want us to have easy. They want more people playing for longer periods.
It's just typical when you have one challenge selected...and in a weird turn of events you actually meet the qualifications to complete another challenge, yet it's not your current selected challenge.
Another eye-ball rolling aspect of the challenges are those which have a 'different' condition. As in unhook 10 different survivors, chase 20 different survivors etc. It's all about getting people to play more matches.
Some of us, myself included, don't have time to dedicate hours and hours to DBD. I can't play as much as I would like.
I was temporarily living away from home and during that time Tome 3's levels 2 and 3 were released. Took me over a week, working 5 days a week plus other duties, but completed the challenges yesterday.
It would be far less of an unpleasant grind to be able to progress toward multiple challenges in a single match.
But again, that's not happening.

I think maybe technical reasons could play a role here as well. Maybe running all challenges in parellel would push too much for some, because it activates something which has to check, if conditions have met. Just take "Dwight the brave" e.g. which has to check distance towards the killer and at time to a timer. But I'm not sure about this one. And even then it should be possible to activate a killer and survivor challenge at the same time...
Well current UI is like a Frankenstein's monster completely bloaten up. Could use a rework as well. I truelly hate it, when Rift challenges and Dailys block after game chat. (Yes, I have more positive than negative Aftergame experience)
Sadly the actually truth is, like many said they want people to play more than they usually play. It's nothing but an incentive to bind their costumers to their product, because it makes it more likely that they will spend money for them. And yes there are people who are already into playing the game quite often, but those aren't the ones they try to reach with it.

They want people to play longer but servers already owerflown at night. That multiple challenge progression could be helpfull for players who plays 1 hour per day. Developers promised it should take this time to unlock the rift when first tome was released. But it takes longer unfortunately.

Just let me have 1 survivor and 1 killer challenge selected.
I often alternate my role and I hate having to remember to swap challenges. I'm not going for rift completion but rather the BP.

Yeah, it should primarily be targeted at time-strapped players just like you describe. Player-friendliness should trump all other concerns. The game existed just fine for 3 years without this system in place, so it doesn't seem like an unreasonable ask.
Plus, all the "do X things to different people," "get X of this one specific emblem," etc. -- these would still necessitate playing multiple matches, so it would still be a collection of long-term goals.
