Trail of Torment Discussion

So one of the new killers Perks is Trail of torment.

What it does?

After kicking a gen the killer gains the undetectable status effect for 16 seconds. There is a cooldown of 80/70/60 seconds i guess. dont know the exact numbers. So seems solid as it stands, 16 seconds are not the world but enough to maybe catch someone off guard.

However beside the cooldown there is another downside:

The kicked Gen will be highlighted in a yellow aura for all survivors.

So IMO this restriction needs to be gone. We would have a Decent stealth perk to work with, but as it now stands your are not stealth, everybody knows that youre stealth.

Lets look at the 3 other stealth perks that come to mind:

  1. Insideous. Stand still for two seconds and get undetectable. Its not a strong perk for many situations, but the survivors dont get noticed.
  2. Tinkerer. If a gen is nearly completed you gain unetectable for 12 seconds and you are notified of the gen thats nearly finished. The survivors dont get a notification
  3. Dark devotion. Hit the obsession and gain undetectable for 30 seconds. The obsession may notice that she has the terror radius now. But the other survivors wont get notified.

How comes that the new perk has such a restriction to it?

Is it so op? 16 seconds for a cooldown and a downside. If the time was 30 seconds okay, but for 16 seconds? a survivor on the other side of the map will know that hes not in danger and the rest have to look carefully for 16 seconds.

If it was the only stealth perk in the game i could understand, but the other perks dont have the downside of a notification.

What do you guys think? especially survivors at red ranks. Do you think this is justified? would it be too strong wihtout the notification?

I tried explaining to myself why the devs chose the aura thing to alarm survivors and I think I finally have an answer.

So, some killers have the Undetectable status effect built into their kit. When survivors face one of the stealthy killers, they'll pay close attention, knowing that at any given time, the killer can just jump scare them.

Now let's talk about other Undetectable perks:

    1. Insidious. This perk is bad by itself, it encourages you to camp objectives which is not healthy in any way. But once the survivors find out you have it, they'll watch out and pay close attention when they're going for an unhook. That's its "counter".

    2. Dark Devotion. The same thing. Once you realise that the Obsession carries the Terror Radius or the killer is stealthy after the Obsession has been hit, you'll look on the HUD more to see if the killer has hit the obsession and is planning to come after other survivors so you can be prepared in a way.

    3. Tinkerer. The same thing. Once the killer comes at a gen almost fully repaired with Undetectable you can play around that next time.

There might be other perks I missed, but You get the point, right? After the first time the killer uses the Undetectable status effect, you'll expect it in a way, either by seeing that the Obsession got hit, or you almost complete a gen. You can ASSUME that maybe he is coming and you can keep a close eye.

Now imagine how this perk would work without the gen aura being revealed to the survivors. At any given moment, the killer can just come at you, being Undetectable of course, and you can only play around that, just by treating the killer the same way you do against usual stealth killers, which would give an imense advantage to the killer for the whole game.

Imo I think it's balanced the way it is right now, you can also pair it with Hex: The Third Seal for its full potential. Hope I helped! :)

I think it as another layer of mind game that killers haven’t had time to explore yet. I think it has some potential to combo effectively with mobile killers or some perks. Maybe Freddy for example. He can teleport after kicking a gen and be opposite of the kicked gen or Hag with that add on to teleport to any trap. Plus it already confuses survivors using Better Together. Usually a perk like this gains value over the game progression. Like next chapter will have a perk that helps a survivor know when a gen is more then 50% done by highlighting it yellow. Now that killer perk can be used to both notify a survivor that a killer is near or that a gen is near completion. I say keep it as is.

All survivors can hear whenever Freddy teleports, so this won't work.

Very few people use Better together, if anything even less will now.

Leaving a terribly designed perk in because some things that make it slightly better may get added is not a good idea ... It's an absolutely awfull perk, which should get reworked asap, I really hope BHVR won't just toss it under the rug and hope people forget about it ... But considering how many times this has already happened ...

Imagine having a perk to sneak up on people that lets them know you are about to sneak up on them.
