Your opinion on trophies/achievements

Never used to bother trophy hunting...ever...never did...until last year.

I was recovering from surgery, cooped up like James Stewart in Rear Window, laying in bed playing DBD on PS4. I decided, with all this time on my hands, to go for the Adept trophies. Starting with survivors, then moving on to killers. Then after impressing myself by actually accomplishing some of the trickier ones like Nurse, I began going after ALL the trophies.

To cut it short, I spent a ridiculous amount of free time playing DBD just to complete achievements. Grinding for hours and hours for trophies like bugged Wounded Healer and the seemingly never-ending Taking One For The Team. Trophies which made you play reckless and often resulted in games which weren't very enjoyable.

Well, I managed to get them all (including all the DLC trophies too). I also got platinum for Jurassic World (which was like oral surgery by a highly stressed dentist) and Maneater (which was so easy I felt guilty getting the platinum).

I was currently working through the GTA V achievements, and got up to every story achievement except the Solid Gold Baby! (70 gold emblems in missions) trophy. Bearing in mind I haven't even stratched the surface with the online trophies, some of the story trophies involving stunt jumps, bridges and knife flights, paper scraps and UFO parts took FOREVER and were utterly soul destroying.

It was getting quite frustrated and I was spending many evening playing toward those little notifications...and I just thought..."Why am I doing this?".

Nobody gives two hoots what trophies you've unlocked, you don't get anything in return and the conditions of some trophies are so ridiculous it makes completion almost impossible in some cases.

So now I have turned my notifications off...and play games for the reason they should be played...for fun. This is also why I don't bother with the Rift pass challenges on DBD anymore: the chores outweigh the rewards. It's much more relaxing now.

So my questions are:

What is your opinion on trophies?

What's the toughest trophy you ever achieved?

Which platinums do you have?

Cheers.

I admit that I cannot recall any trophies I've earned, but having trophies is a great way to get the most out of a game, once it has been completed. It improves skills in all areas and gives a sense of accomplishment!

So they're good for personal use definitely. I don't feel intimidated or envious if people gloat (I don't mean by responding to your question, obviously! I mean waving it around when nobody asked at all). As an item to boast with, it's not that impressive.

That's the thing when noticing seasoned trophy hunters. Sometimes I look at a player's profile and notice several platinums, and I don't feel blown away by their achievements. I am more likely to think "Crumbs...this guy has way too much time to play games".

I agree some trophies are good for improving overall skill (like the GTA vehicle achievements, as annoying as they were), but others (like 'Taking One For The Team' in DBD) serve no benefit and are a real tiresome grind to boot.

The achievements that really shouldn't be a thing are the 'Complete the game without saves/dying on nightmare mode' style ones. Just no.

    I think it is fun.
