You were still in the pickup animation, which cannot be interrupted by anything. Had this been a flashlight save the effect would have kicked in as the animation ended, since it lasts a while. But since it was just a pallet, this happened instead.

Thank you for solid answers I was confused why this was and wasn't aware of this feature
