Why have the battlepass cosmetics not been put in the store yet?

This is an almost exact copy of my post here: https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1564045/#Comment_1564045

I made it into its own thread so it becomes easier to find it again later, and to give the developers a chance to prove that they are at least reading criticism by using the "BHVR Read" reaction without the need to write a response, which is not available on posts as far as I know.

Battlepass cosmetics release a minimum of 6 months after each battlepass closes. For the first battlepass the earliest date would have been in early July. Nothing was released. No information about when that is going to happen either.

Here is why I think that situation is bullshit:

  • no one was asking for a battlepass system
  • no one forced them to release a battlepass when it clearly wasn't even ready (example: first battlepass has a completely purple arcade cabinet charm - it looks awful, it would have been easy to make it look passable by giving it some sort of texture that isn't literally all purple)
  • no one forced them to announce that they would release the cosmetics a minimum of 6 months later
  • they clearly had no plan how or when they would release the cosmetics. The 6 months is just a lazy excuse to shut down people saying the battlepass is predatory by forcing people to grind the game for an unreasonable amount of time for fear of missing out on items

Source for the 6 months thing (scroll to the bottom): https://deadbydaylight.com/en/archives

What happens when The Rift closes?

If you missed some rewards in The Rift, most of them will eventually be available in our in-game store after a minimum period of 6 months. (More details to be revealed at a later date.)

There are still no details though. No information about when they will release.

And yes I know that it says minimum, but minimum can also mean 10 years from now. They could have taken their time to flesh out the release plan for their battlepass system, but they did not. They needed to buy themselves time to come up with something because almost certainly their original plan was to make the cosmetics exclusive to the battlepass, but that would have made them look bad, so they came up with an excuse in hopes of finding a solution after they released the battlepass.

(More details to be revealed at a later date.)

The battlepass was announced during the year 3 livestream. That was on May 31st 2019. That is over a year ago, and should have been more than enough time to come up with a plan on how to handle the release of the battlepass cosmetics into the store.

dude the first rift came out in october 30th 2019 it has not even been out for a full year. and as you know 6 months after it was released there was a little issue called the coronavirus i'm impressed that they even managed to keep giving us as much content as they have.

To be honest, i would be happy if the rift cosmetics would never come to the store.

I miss my blue lettuce hag costume, I have it on ps4 but not on pc and since console will never be optimized I will never see that costume again.

no one was asking for a battlepass system

They had done polls prior about what things people would like added to the game. The Battlepass type option was very highly voted among those. Many many people were asking for a battlepass system, you just weren't one of them.

no one forced them to release a battlepass when it clearly wasn't even ready (example: first battlepass has a completely purple arcade cabinet charm - it looks awful, it would have been easy to make it look passable by giving it some sort of texture that isn't literally all purple)

You're totally right, that one mediocre charm is evidence that the battlepass wasn't remotely ready for release. All the other cosmetics, the lore entries, the archives, the cutscenes, how could any of that be released on schedule when this charm looks bad.

Didn't you know that announcing things and never going through with them has been BHVRs business model for almost two years?

    *cough cough... console optimization... cough*

The Covid-19 excuse is pretty weak here, man. Everything's digital. They don't even have to make a banner for the Rift skins, just add them to the store. They have the skins already existing in the game, available for those who grinded for them. Pushing a cosmetic to store has never been an issue before for BHVR. There's always excuses for things.

Well for that matter you already have the challenges rewarding you with BP.

I agree that giving us a bunch of pretty useless charms, from which 80% dont look very appealing anyway, is really underwhelming. Maybe they should do less levels which take more fragments to level up. That way they could give you the high quality stuff (Skins, better looking charms like the ones on the last level of the pass) on each level and it would feel much more rewarding.

Sort of related: The green veins outfit for the Hag (Bile Bedlam) had the body and weapon in one battlepass and the hair in another (they are not considered to be part of the same set but they clearly belong together). If you got only the head, it's basically worthless, it looks pretty awful with any other body. If you got the weapon and body, but not the head, you can at least substitute the head with one that is available in the store.

Or you can wait an indeterminate amount of time, after which the piece(s) you need to complete the outfit become(s) available in the store. Maybe. Or maybe not.

They need cheap, worthless filler to make people look at the battlepass more often. People who haven't bought it yet are encouraged to look at it ("You unlocked a new reward!") and then see all the items they are not getting because they haven't bought the pass yet and are thus only getting the free items.

Remember when exclusives were made available for everyone?

By giving these cosmetics to all PC and console players, we hope to put an end to shady resellers and scams while also including everyone, regardless of the platform they play on.

    everyone*

    * Unless you didn't play when the battlepass released. In which case we don't really care about you and you won't get the battlepass cosmetics ever.

Sensible exceptions due to licensing / contracts exist and are listed in the linked post. These restrictions do not apply to the battlepass cosmetics. They are not licensed. There is no contract with a third-party that prevents the release of the items.

The cosmetics not being available, and in some cases not being available ever again, will also become an issue for players on next-gen consoles (assuming that Dbd will be available on them). Playing the game for the first time on your new console? Well too bad. We don't care about players on your platform, we only cared about some platforms at one point in the past. Too bad for you, guess you can't get those cosmetics without a time machine.

So, let me get this straight. BHVR can release new DLC survivors and killers into the store, release brand new cosmetics into the store at a consistent rhythm, all during COVID, but miraculously can't put pre-existing Battlepass skins into that same store because of . . . COVID?

I think BHVR needs a better excuse than that one.

The date reason is completely valid. It said minimum of six months, not after six months. It could be five years from now and still be accurate with what was stated.

But don't try the COVID excuse when BHVR has been updating the store with new items throughout COVID.

The point Mandy was making is that objectively COVID did impact things, and there is no denying that. Even if BHVR managed to contain/mitigate that and lost only like 10% (random number) of the development/production output, which still did let them release at a consistent rate like we are seeing, it would means that they had to bring up a priority list and discard something from the bottom of this list.

Of course you will not be able to see what was actually internally scrapped/delayed because of Covid, you will only see what they still manage to deliver.

All things considered i'm pretty happy to see how things developped since COVID happened. It really showed BHVR managed to face the situation and managed to find a balance with how they are able to output updates, and i really hope they will be able to keep it up like they are doing.

Do consider a lot of other games outright stopped development while others managed to "simply" have delays, and that's only talking about the videogame industry.

In one of their early streams talking about the Battle Pass, they stated these cosmetics were going to release in the store '6 months to 1 year' after it closes, but they were likely going to go with a year. Then not_Queen said and I quote 'So that's one year of exclusive content right there.'

We're not talking about DLC development that might have been scrapped, or the mention of Early Game Slowdown that might have gotten delayed, or MMR being in the state it was in, or that sort of thing. People are discussing putting pre-existing skins into a store, to which she used a COVID excuse when BHVR seems to have no issue putting new stuff into the store.

So, I stand by my point. My mind is not going to be changed on that one. Like I said, the date said at least six months. It could be 10 years, and still be accurate to what was said. And simply pointing out that wording would have been enough without playing the COVID card on this one.

Personally? Personally I don't care about the skins. I haven't bought a single Rift because they didn't sell me on it. But for this instance, COVID is a bit of a poor excuse when the store gets plenty new items even during COVID.

You guys have your position, and I have mine. It's obvious we're not meeting together on that one. Which is fine, such is life. I'm going to move on now. But thanks for responding, nonetheless. I do appreciate you taking the time.

My expectation was that there is a plan for how (all at once? one set each? per character? ,...) and roughly when to release the items in the store.

I expected that such a plan would be completed, or almost complete, before or shortly after the first battlepass release. No such plan or details were ever released, which leads me to believe that it does not exist.

I would understand if such a plan had been released, in the FAQ for example, and you could not follow it anymore and it had to be delayed or scrapped completely.

But no such plan exists. Saying that battlepass items would be released eventually seems like it was tacked on at the last minute after someone pointed out that putting exclusive items behind a grind and paywall makes you look bad.

Additionally, as @Kilmeran has pointed out, new items are being put it in the store at what appears to be the same pace that it has always been. In fact the creation of new cosmetics seems to have even increased with the release of legendary skins.

If anything the already existing items could have been used as substitutes for new skins, to lessen the load of the art team: No need to create new cosmetics at the same pace as before, just fill the "release days" of new cosmetics in the store with items from the first battlepass.

The real question is, would they be purchasable with shards or aura cells only?

  • Madjura
    Madjura Member Posts: 2,485

It has now been over a year and the items are still missing, and there are no news.

The battlepass items may as well be considered to be legacy 2.0, 3.0, ... and so on at this point. If you didn't get them when they were available, you will never get them.

Nurse's Fluid Nightingale skin made a guest appearance recently so it can be inferred that the others will be joining her in the store. Furthermore the devs confirmed on a recent qna from home that they plan to release the rest of tome 1 to the store too.

  • Madjura
    Madjura Member Posts: 2,485

I remembered that too but I couldn't find a news post or anything that confirms it. Do you have a source for it? Or a screenshot from the store maybe that shows that it is now available?

  • GoodBoyKaru
    GoodBoyKaru Member Posts: 22,819

i can't screenshot the store to show you can get it because i already bought it but it's definitely in there, because i bought it from there.

Did you seriously use coronavirus as an excuse to not put them in the store? It is adding cosmetics to a store which they are clearly having no problem doing considering how many have been added into it for the past year without issues. Like jeez, that was the most SIMP thing to say lol. "Covid slowing down cosmetics".

It is just to make rift passes more desirable. Nothing more nothing less. More than enough time has passed for the first pass to go into the store though and there's been like 5 since then.

the term a minimum of 6 months means it might not get there at 6 months, or 1 year or 5 years... but they can put it in there... it's upto them. I don't see the battle pass as predatory, i've spent 10 bucks on it and gotten 5 times the auric cells back so far so each pass i've spent 2 bucks on. not a bad deal if I say so myself.

What I would like to know is how goes the work on a charms section in the store? I know that take more work because it requires a new bit of coding in the game. I'm not upset i'm just curious as to what is going on. I am on the dev's side here.... working from home is no joke. it's depressing when you don't get a chance to decompress from work becuase you live where you work. so please my question here is really to hope to steer the conversation away from people yelling. and those of you that scoff at the explanation that covid/sars-cov2 is part of the problem you obviously have no clue as to what goes into making a game. square enix, bioware, bethesda, and many many many other major game companies have had to delay and everything. Also as I stated at the beginning of this post there was never a concrete date, just a minimum time and you are all whining because you WANT something, you WANT something.... not that you CARE a damn bit about the game. If you cared you'd not be screaming about something that they are still within their stated time frame.

Sorry for the revival but @Madjura I logged onto my alt account to get you this screenshot:

The Nurse's Fluid Nightingale outfit, from the original Rift, in the store at 1,080 cells. Included the date (from my 2nd monitor at the top, 9th November 2020 at 7:46pm) to prove it's from today and not just halloween exclusive.

Yes, this is my screenshot. Yes, this is my alt account, hence why the devotion level isn't consistent with the rest of my posts. No, I don't play on here often; literally just when I wanna do a climb the ranks quickly challenge.
