Why are so many survivors doing this?
This past week, most survivors attempt a self-unhook while another survivor is going to unhook them. And I mean the rescuers are usually less than 10 meters away, while the killer is on the other end of the map. This often pushes them into the second sacrificial stage. What gives?

Fastest way to get a stealthy survivor to unhook you is to attempt to Kobe.

Not sure really but maybe it has something to do with the "Not Today" Steam achievement. If the killer is far away and you know there's someone near you to help you in case you fail it's worth a try.

It's definitely the fastest way to get me to leave you on the hook. I'm not interfering with your suicide attempt.
Except they're just ######### themselves over because they get pushed to death hook.

They're trying to cuck the rescuer for laughs or genuinely don't care about winning, bloodpoints or pipping (maybe even wanting to depip). It's the same reason the DC and suicide on hook counts are prevalent enough that there are more games with one rather than not whether you're a solo queue survivor or a killer (Obviously a little less reason for 4 man SWFs to suicide or try to unhook themselves with deliverance).

Because the devs encourage it with pending change to slippery meat and luck offerings/perks mainly being for unhooking yourself? Trying for the achievement to unhook yourself a bunch of times? Killer has a mori so why not try to get BP from struggle?

People attempt it because there is no personal penalty for doing it since they are getting unhooked anyways. And if they do get it, then they feel temporary satisfaction in being lucky.
It is annoying if you are rescuing though. Although it's better than someone waiting for you to run over to kill themselves on hook -- that imo is being an #########.

The penalty is being on death hook, which these survivors often get to because they tried to self-unhook.

Most people who 4% usually don't do it at <20 seconds before struggle in my experience.

they probaply just saw a 4Gamers video with a clip where one kobes off right when someone else was about to rescue them and want to do that aswell.
then they misjudge their remaining time on the hook and suddenly end up being in phase 2, which could have been avoided by them not trying to meme.

If people are putting themselves into struggle phase when them being rescued would avoid that I say ######### 'em. They're not worth it.

Also not running any perks that let's them see the other survivors aura (would take away that precious DS slot) and heavens forbid they actually look around...

Assuming they aren't just being idiots, they might be working towards the unhook yourself 50 times achievement.

The only time I do it is if the timer is still pretty high and the survivor is close to getting me off. I still need the trophy so I may as well try. Though, I have seen people do it in my face and hit struggle, which at that point I just walk away. I don't mind you trying when you aren't 3 seconds from stage 2, but put yourself into stage 2, and I'll leave you in it.

The only reason I do it sometimes is to work towards the unhooking yourself achieve. I don't wanna risk killing myself so I'll save a couple attempts right before I know I'm getting rescued.

Even if they're only chased for 10 seconds after that, that's still a little bit of gen rush time everyone else gets. Never underestimate the value of a meat shield.
While on the hook, you see every survivor's aura automatically. It's a game mechanic.

They probably just misjudged the remaining time and tried to Kobe in your face but have you as backup before struggle. I see many do this but never when they actually get to struggle for this...
maybe they misjudged your distance and actually tried to end themselves on hook because they didn’t want to give you points for the unhook for reasons (they think) you did before in the match..

Because "Why do survivors try to unhook themselves just before being rescued even though the unhooker is not hook farming and the killer is far away, thereby pushing themselves into the second hook phase?" is too long a title, and shortening it to just "Why do survivors try to unhook themselves" guarantees people who only read the title and not the OP will be replying.

This! I usually do it if no one is coming for me or they are being slow AF. They usually start running after that 😂

I usually do this when playing Survivor because, "oh they're getting close I might as well take my chances since they'll get to me in a few seconds."
Some Survivors might do this too, for this reason as well. While we do wait for our rescuer we don't want to take our chances early on if they're not close to us. If we're nowhere near close to second phase and our rescuer is approaching us then we'll take our few chances.
