Could this new horror game 'Phasmophobia' have some competition with DBD in the future?
What do you guys think?
With a horror multiplayer game that has overwhelmingly positive reviews within one month of it's release, do you think we could see some competition between this and dbd?
Try and keep the discussion respectful.

I liked to watch some streamers play it but overall I don’t see the game lasting very long. the fact that the ghosts are AI makes it pretty boring after a while I assume.
I hope it will stay and get cool and innovative updates though! Not seeing it as a DbD competitor either way..

I've also seen streamers like Puppers and Monto play it, wonder if interests them the same dbd did.

One's co-op and the other is PvP. I don't think they are a competition to each other. If anything you can play phasmophobia if you had an annoying match in DBD

I think that Phasmophobia excels well in the horror category than DBD, but even when phasmophobia gets a pvp i won't be anywhere near as competing with DBD

different type of game.
You might as well as if the new Amnesia is a competition for dbd

I just really wish White Noise 2 had support still. It would make a great competitor.

Having a fair few hours in both, I'm personally of the opinion that the games are too different to create any real competition. While I actually think Phasmophobia has the potential to be a respectable game in its own right, the differences are so vast they could almost exist as separate genres. As for the streamer interest, aside from the usual buzz that surrounds the latest "trend" both games just lend themselves very well to streaming as they are small, bite-sized rounds that make for decent viewing content. Sadly, DBD is still in a position of monopoly!

It is an interesting enough game, but still a little bit different of the crowd. When Friday the 13th came out, I played that game a LOT and still prefer the format better then DBD, but the devs did not support that game at all (much worse then this game), an the open mic/ hacking/cheating was too much. Not to mention the Open mic in that game you had to auto mute every person every game to avoid all the racism/hate nonesense
there is sadly no real good competition to Dead by daylight, which is why they don't have to try that hard to success. This style of game is fun, and a horror theme game like this is addicting to many of us, but it is all we have.

Not at all.
I like the game, I play it with friends, but even the slightest investigation into it shows it's gonna crash and burn fast.
It's made by a single person. Joining their discord includes pins ranting about "don't offer me help I DON'T NEED A DEV TEAM I CAN DO IT ALONE."
He also has a board up that lists all features being worked on and being considered at the moment. Almost everything set to change is minor bugs or poor animations with VR. The only thing in the works for 'balance' is nerfing the thermometer because it's too reliable, meaning in future expect more aimless wandering waiting for anything to happen by accident.
There's also concepts like "add an appartment map" and "add a mansion."
There's so very little actual content coming, not even a mention of adding different ghosts. So many of the current ghosts list special abilities that I've almost never seen them use. Even the "fast" ghosts can almost reliably be outran, making it almost impossible to get caught on the big maps.
It is enjoyable, but without keeping content coming and keeping the playerbase invested, it's not going to stay popular. It's a flavour of the month game, and honestly, as good as a job as he's done making the game by himself, it's the attitude that he can do it all alone that is going to make it fail very soon.
That said he's probably made an absolute killing off it for a one-man job.

I wish it was the case, then the devs would actually start to care more about the game. But having played Phasmophobia, it is a different version of horror its Co-op basically, its fun but very different compared to DBD. However it isn't to say maybe in the future there will be competition, but its unlikely due to the fact that its an AI ghost and it can get boring overtime, and on top finding a match is very stressful. But hopefully a game comes out that rivals DBD because it seems the game needs it badly

Nope, absolutely not. They're incredibly different games. I enjoy both but Phasmophobia is 100% more boring and one-dimensional than DBD. Is it more scary? Without a doubt. But once you have played enough hours in the game, despite the fact that it does retain some of the fear factor, it does get quite boring. I haven't played the game in over a week at this point, and that's after my friends and I morphed our playtime of it into "Phasmophobia Battle Royale". (Bring only the default stuff and some extra flashlights, once everyone and everything is in the house, nobody is allowed to leave until there is one person alive)

DBD dominates the market for aysmmetrical horror games right now and BHVR knows it. If there were a legitimate competition to DBD I think the game would be in a much better spot than it currently is.

I think one thing Phasmophobia did very well are the items, and for a few I actually tried to „translate“ them to DbD mechanics as new survivor items (see Share Your Work - Creations in this forum)

Honestly.. Phasmophobia is super slow. It feels more like a game people play so they can look scared and get views. Been plenty of those in the past.

I think Phasmophobia is a great game, however it will only affect the DBD playerbase in an indirect way. They aren't the same type of game at all and would only really attract horror fans as opposed to DBD players. For DBD to get competition there would need to be an asymmetrical VS game of some description and lets be real, all of the ones that have released in recent memory have been pretty lacklustre.

It's decent, but I think it'll be a flash in the pan.

Yeah idk if the ghosts aren't fully realised yet or what but I feel like their unique abilities don't even do anything. Like for example a Jinn is supposed to hunt you faster the further away it is from you but i don't notice it catch up to us any faster than a normal ghost like a Spirit or Oni. It's strange, I love the concept of the game and how it's quite streamlined and simple to get into but damn it really needs more ghosts and maps. And faster movement speed for both the players and the ghosts.
Also how cool would it be if there were multiple ghosts in a single map, or the ghost moved from room to room? Or even the ability to banish the ghost with rituals and stuff? It has a lot of potential but this singular Dev is gonna squander all of it if he doesn't do the right thing fast.
