At this point I’m certain BHVR release these teasers for their own amusement.
I’m without doubt that teasers for upcoming Chapters are released purely for the devs entertainment and amusement derived from the overwhelming amount of speculation they always elicit.
I guarantee they’re perusing the Internet right now, either smiling, or outright laughing at some of the theories that are popping up.
I don’t imply anything sinister here. I’m sure it’s all very fun for them stirring up excitement and rumours in the DBD community every few weeks.

it’s also some way to kind of deconfirm some possibilities: this killer will for example not be Candyman. That’s for sure. So they kind of build up hype in one direction without spilling all the beans at once.

It’s because it seemed like such a silly, obtuse thing to focus on. That of all things, the number “4” was the clue.
It was quite clever. Even I was sucked into thinking that it being PH because of the shape of the 4 was a ridiculous theory.

I dunno what I was feeling the moment the 4 turned and then the reveal trailer played, but I know I was smiling the entire time.

I don’t know how they deal with it. I hate keeping secrets. I just can’t wait for it to be revealed as an original chapter so people thinking it’s Until Dawn can 🤫.

I mean it's a bit of a mixed bag isn't it?
Every other theory is "Until Dawn," and it seems pretty clearly aimed to bait that theory. So now the chapter is either Until Dawn, or a bunch of people annoyed that they got their hopes up for it.
That or it's a non-licensed chapter and they've already set themselves up for "it's just a ripoff of Until Dawn."

No doubt. I'm pretty sure they've mentioned in tweets that they love watching the speculation. Wouldn't be surprised if they sat back with a bucket of popcorn reading all the killer theories and just chuckling to themselves.

I just don’t see it. The only similarity is the fact it looks like a Wendigo. Until Dawn is known for snow, the woods in the teaser are very generic. Plus, I’m almost 99.99% sure this isn’t a licensed chapter. Logically, they’d have no reason to tease it.
They’d want people who played Until Dawn to come over to this game. One of the main reasons we get licensed chapters is because of the money they generate. They got me because of Halloween and I’m pretty sure a lot of others discovered this game because of the crossovers.

There's no good reason to tease an unlicensed chapter either. All you do is show the 50 million licensed franchises it could be then release some random crap out of left field. Like when they showed Plague's hand, people can guess whatever they like but nobody was like "yup, that's a projectile vomiting babylonian priestess."
Until Dawn was pretty popular, I don't see why they'd have any reason not to go for it except for the risks surrounding playstation exclusivity. Sony would probably be up for it because it gives people a reason to consider buying a PS5 since it's back compatible with PS4 games, they may want to play it after seeing it in DBD alongside other icons.
I don't think it IS Until Dawn because the hand is just a bit to fat and human to be the Wendigo, but I don't see anything else that comes close to theorise around.

How is there no good reason to tease an unlicensed chapter? Do you not know what a teaser is? Why do you think games, tv shows and movies all release teasers before a full trailer? It’s to start conversations and build hype, which is exactly what’s happening.
I’m a fan of Until Dawn and I never said it wouldn’t be a good fit. It just isn’t this chapter. If they were to get the license for it, we’d know. They wouldn’t tease it like this, they would straight up tell us. However, I don’t think it will ever come to this game though, because of how Sony are with their exclusives. I can’t see them allowing their characters in DBD.

The biggest problem with the Until Dawn theory in my opinion is SONY. Sony doesn't like working with companies, and they don't like sharing their stuff. It was legal hell to get Horizon Zero Dawn on PC, and Sony didn't even want to allow Crossplay on popular games like Fortnite until the internet had a breakdown. Sony isn't a smart company. If Until Dawn wasn't owned by Sony, I'd probably be all for it.

Yes, but the theorising isn't actually great when all that anyone theorises around is licenses that they probably don't have. It doesn't 'build hype' so much as raise hopes to dash them.

Well that’s a people problem. I haven’t got my hopes up about this being a licensed chapter, people just like to grasp at straws.
They could have just released a teaser of a glass of water and people would be like “OH MY GOD....WATER....LAKES....IT’S JASON!!!!”
People need to stop expecting every chapter to be licensed and something they want. 😂

I agree the reactions people had were so epic, like dead hard Diva was in tears of joy, screaming, and it was just bizare, that when I realized how big of a deal PH is in the genre, I questioned was he this serious of a deal, now I know he is.
