Bloodborne BC on PS5 has shattered my hopes of DBD improved performance on PS5.
Just days to go till next gen consoles launch, and with embargo’s lifted, news of PS4 titles running on PS5 have surfaced. It’s mostly been nothing but praises, but it’s worth noting that most of those praises are for PS4 games that specifically got big patches very recently to optimise them for PS5.
A lot of those that have been tested are part of Sony’s PS+ Collection (a selection of free PS4 games to play on PS5 to those subscribed to PS+). One of these free games is the famous (or is it infamous) Bloodborne from Japan Studio and From Software (a BRILLIANT game). In the past 24 hours reviewers with early access to PS5 and and PS+ Collection have been finally getting around to testing Bloodborne on their PS5’s, and have been reporting on social media that other than having dramatically reduced load times (expected due to the SSD), the game performs EXACTLY the same as it does on PS4.
My thoughts immediately drifted to DBD and my heart just sank. That until there is the official upgrade to DBD PS5 version (whenever that is), BC of DBD PS4 version is likely going to still frustrate me (and others) with performance dips and fps dips.
I’m pretty despondent about this.

I'm not really that surprised. The difference between console generations is less significant now. Yeah PS5 IS an improvement over PS4, but from what I've seen it's not as significant as previous generations. If someone showed me gameplay of a PS5 game without any prior context and told me it was ps4 then I would probably believe them, lol.

It was more the promise of PS5’s Boost Mode for PS4 games. It was implied that it would work universally for all PS4 games that are BC on PS5. But it now turns out that Boost Mode is only for PS4 games specifically patched to use it.
I can’t see BHVR doing this when they’re already working on official next gen console versions of DBD. Would be a waste of their resources.

Don't get your hopes up. It's not a hardware issue, it's a game issue. When I upgraded my PC, my frame rate issues lessened, but the horrible choking stutter most certainly did not go away. The game's prettier, sure, but there's no performance difference between low and ultra.

I can only move my hopes over to whenever the next gen versions release sometime 2021.
Fingers crossed they’ve rebuilt some things from the ground up, rather than “glossed things up”.
I think it’ll be the last straw for many players if the next gen upgrade for consoles and PC still has performance issues.
This game doesn’t need to look amazing. It just needs to perform better.

Regarding Bloodborne - there are rumours that there will be a Remaster on PS5 and even PC. So it might entirely be possible that they did not work on the PS4-Version for PS5, when they want to bring a Remastered Version.
So DBD-performance might still be better on Next Gen Consoles.

I mean, we'll have to see. From Software has moved on to other projects, and as much as I would love to see Ludwig's glorious moonlight in 60 FPS, it's not getting updated anymore and it hasn't been for a long time. DbD is, but I'm not gonna hope for it. It's all up to BHVR and Sony now, I guess. Maybe they'll gain the insight to do it. Heh.

Thats because bloodbornes fps is somewhat tied to the speed of the game. Cant remember where but theres this ps4 modder that used some code from dark souls 3 into bloodborne to make it play smoothly but he had to lower the resolution from 1080 to 720 but he got a stable fps. I wouldnt worry about dbd as much it doesnt have the same problems at all that bloodborne had.
I'll try and find it brb

Ok found it. Watch this video, pretty sure he explains what the modder had to do and how he did it to make bloodborne run at 60fps. For bloodborne the issue was alot harder to deal with due to it being tied to game speed. Watch it, trust me dbd may have problems, but the problems arent at all the same as bloodbornes. Probably a good thing Boost Mode doesnt work on ps5 bloodborne...otherwise everything would look silly at x2 speed. Theyd need to specifically work on a remaster or patch to get 60fps on it.

What are yall talking about lmao, it has already been confirmed that dbd will be running in 60 fps and 4K on ps5

Bloodborne has a framerate cap right? I'm not sure if that is the case for the ps4 version of dbd.
0 -
Well the upgraded PS5 version which has no definite release date yet is meant to. The OP is talking about running the ps4 version on the ps5.
0 -
lol.
I have severe doubts about that. BHVR never hits performance targets.
6 -
Oh I’m not concerned about Bloodborne’s performance. It’s still a brilliant game even by today’s standards.
It just highlights that PS5’s Boost Mode isn’t “automatic”. PS4 games require a patch specifically to utilise it. Something I don’t see happening for DBD PS4 Version with a PS5 version however many months away that is.
1 -
Ahhh ok I gotcha. So if the frame rate had just been simply increased to 60fps, it would have also doubled the game run speed, looking strange and silly.
1 -
The official PS5 version will, but we don’t know when that drops. It’s sometime 2021.
0 -
Do PS4 games definitely require a patch to benefit from the ps5 boost mode?
0 -
Hmm I’m not 100% certain. It’s just so far implied that the PS4 games that are performing dramatically better on PS5 have also been games that specifically got updates to take advantage of PS5 features and improved performance.
Testing Until Dawn on PS5 will also be another interesting one. As brilliant as that game is, the FPS left a LOT to be desired.

The problem here is, even the PS4 Pro have issues running DBD and the devs don't care.
The extra power does nothing, if anything, there are more frame rate issues and overheating going on, on the PS4 Pro.
Even the Xbox one X, the world's most powerful console has issues running DBD.
Next gen consoles will have even more issues.
2 -
Until dawn was a lot of fun. I ought to replay it sometime.

It’s very intelligently done.
One of few horror comedies that succeeds at being both funny and genuinely scary.
It’s LOADED with horror cliches and stereotypes, but it’s self aware of these and at just how ridiculous these cliches and stereotypes are.
It’s a mish mash of things that shouldn’t make sense in one horror experience, but the clever writing MAKES it make sense.
1 -
I know that even with additional power etc... that won't necessarily fix many of the framerate issues because of how poorly optimised this game is. But i'm cautiously optimistic that the ps5 will at least offer a better experience that the one us console users are currently used to. Actually atm the ps4 isn't absolutely atrocious since the latest patch but it never seems to stay in this tolerable condition for very long :(
1 -
Yeah check out the vid I linked if you care about it!

Sekiro got a specific update in preparation for use on PS5. Bloodborne didn’t.
1 -
I mean, the devs promised 60 FPS on console 2 years ago too :]
I would stay rather cautious
3 -
Is it confirmed that there will be an official ps5 version? I remember them tweeting that the Ps5 version of dbd will be available at launch and will have improved graphics. I think they will just release a big patch for ps5 users and wont release an extra version.

I'm also pretty worried about DbD on Ps5. They can't even keep their current versions stable at times it would be very surprising to see DbD run better on Ps5 than it does on a high end PC. Hell, they promised 60 fps 2 years ago and almost broke Ps4 with the Mid chapter patch. I'd keep expectations low tbh.
5 -
It’s pretty crucial that they get it right, not just for PS5 but also for Xbox Series S/X, and next gen PC hardware.
It’ll be impossible to continue growing the game and entice new players too far into the future if they can’t modernise DBD.
1 -
Shouldn't really be surprising with the how the game in general runs on basically everything right now.
2 -
There is no reason why Dead By Daylight shouldn't be able to run at 4K resolution and 60 FPS on next gen consoles. Heck, I would happy with 1080P and 60FPS.
1 -
If entering the boss room for The One Reborn doesn't drop to 1FPS, then it'd be a massive improvement.
Haven't played in awhile, but that performance drop stuck out in my mind.
0 -
I'm gonna laugh really hard if we still see FPS drops (sloppy butcher/noed,bloodlust,chests etc.) on next gen consoles
3 -
Hi, I only read 4 comments down before posting mine. But as a developer for another company I can tell you right now,
Upgrades will NEVER mean JACK if the developer doesn't personally update that aspect.
Its childish to think ps4 bugs or exploits are magically going to be fixed just because you upgrade your hardware. When realistically it all boils down to DBD developer to....learn 2 code.
TLDR: blame the developer for issues not sony.
5 -
Taking this into consideration reminds of a query I've had in my head many times while watching streamers: what kind of PCs are they running that they never seem to get the fps and other issues others get? Especially those random issues that don't happen every game but I've seen PC guys say does happen to them.
To put it another way: from this PS4 player's perspective watching PC streamers play DbD, they seem to always be playing some much better version of the game than I could ever dream of and yet other PC players with decent machines seem to be getting issues. It can't be that every DbD PC streamer is running some modded overclocked 5 thousand dollar plus mega gaming machine-can it?

This is like being mad your perfectly good ferrari doesn't become a super ferrari when you put new tires on...
0 -
Ferrari?!
Lol, yeah I completely forgot how much of a “luxury” gaming experience it is to have frequent FPS drops and performance stutter.
1 -
Here's hoping we don't wait long for a performance boost!

Perspective, man. Glibness aside, a games service that works perfectly fine 98% of the time is the dang future.
It ain't perfect, but getting bent out of shape over dropped frames and ray tracing is gettin up their when we start talking about first world windmills.
So we don't get a ps5 super performance boost....wooo?
