What is wrong with matchmaking?

I spend 5 minutes in queue as a rank 2 survivor only to get paired with a rank 20, rank 18, and rank 17 survivor. Each of them only had 1 level 1 perk equipped and we were up against a rank 9 killer. They got destroyed and I escaped through the hatch, but seriously what kind of game is this?

I don't get how I can watch streamers constantly get matched with and against red ranks, yet I'm the sole red rank in most of my games. Like am I being region locked and not allowed to play with red ranks that might be a few ms ping further away from me?

  • SWF , and their youtubes only have proper matches shown usually.

Streamers don't want to show their losing games or games not pushing their agenda. If they are one of those toxic Killer mains, they will not show any survivor games where they actually die. It's only the bad or unlucky Killers they showcase that they go against. Same for the opposite side. And even split players only want to show themselves winning.

Meanwhile I have gotten multiple low rank Survivor matches tonight working on the Tome that basically sabotaged the entire match. One of them even waited to kill themselves till I got to them to save them. She was spiteful I didn't let her kill herself at the start of the match. Most of these matches haven been complete slaughters cause bad Survivors sink the ship so fast.

Dude I was rank 4 and overnight got stuck at rank 6!! I keep getting matches with low ranks, and while some are amazing, some are really new and have trouble with getting around the gens and such. I also keep getting them with rank 1 killers, and I usually depip because my teammates get lost or hurt and, ofc, I'm not perfect I make mistakes but they usually don't know what to do to save me or their team. It's such a pain, but I know there's bigger fish to fry in the universe. Still, would be nice to have well matched matches!

That is why the "and", those streamers just match against SWF a lot; and when they get solo's they destroy them in like 10 seconds so most of their stream consists of SWF gameplay matches.

There are simply not enough red rank killers around. That´s the whole problem.

See this I don't understand. Killer is stupid easy yet I get the feeling their just aren't that many red rank killers, like why not?

Cause I won't sweat my (Bad Word) off to get something I dont get rewarded for

And MM already puts me against red ranks so I am "artificially" a red rank

Yeah, they tend to only show themselves in the best light (most of them anyway... there are exceptions). I've considered Streaming at some point, but I'd show every match, win, lose, or draw. Tips from a Mediocre DbD player!

These guys all depiped. So it is possible that they were all rank 1. They chose the map and they brutally lost without completing a single gen. If you're playing this game with a strong killer, killer is easy.

Not a full SWF + console players + meme perks + enough points for several gens = doubt.

It's hard to say if the were a SWF or not. Which perk do you consider meme? And as for points for several gens, It's not like they weren't doing gens, more that I was pushing them off and they weren't completing them. And what is there to doubt? I stand by my statement that killer is stupid easy to play. Once you get good with killer you stop losing. It's game after game of beating "sweaty rank 1 survivors". Just look at Otz , Heather (aka meangirl), Dowsey, Fungoose, Scott Jund, or OhTofu, they can go several days without losing. It's because killer is overtuned easy right now.

    matchmaking is barebones...

  • Tsulan
    Tsulan Member Posts: 15,095

Then killers should be nerfed, right?

When they are obvously over tuned.

Anyway, it's not about the kills but about the fun. OoO users don't survive more than other survivors. But does the killer have fun, while facing OoO?

Or survivors could be buffed. I agree with you the OoO should be reworked. I've made posts if you look at my history on how I'd change OoO.

And there is already a big problem coming together with that "if". The fact that only 50-25% of the killer roster offer real viability in these circumstances and everything else is sweaty to earn satisfaction, then something is quite wrong. Especially since red ranks are so diluted by now because it is not skill but time invested that gets you there.

Also if you have to always pick one of those strong killer to be prepared against 4 men swf trials, you will probably stomp solos and less experienced players adding to the problems of the community.

And to the point of killer becoming easier over the years, it did became tolerable. Infinites, permanent hook sabo squads and the like we're not harder, they were unfair. It still doesn't feel rewarding to play killer or survivor since both don't really have much clear cut win conditions.

You can set your own goal by either bp, emblems/pips or kills/escape and for most people the last is their criterium for a successful round. Especially since all 3 categories don't necessarily correlate with each other.

I for example played killer for bp only, so i left games with 0 kills, 32k bp and STILL double pipped in the middle ranks. I played my part in trying for 8 even distributed hooks and if they still didn't manage 5 gens I would start to slug instead of kill to not spoil their fun.

And the best part after those 20+ minutes, more often than not, you get to read "gg ez noob killer" when they all manage to escape. Way to go nurture a nontoxic killer environment.

Usually it's red rank swf trolls who group with brown ranks so they get to go up against a brown rank killer for an easy match.

Sadly they don't seem to have the foresight to understand that they are killing their own game by cutting off new player revenue steams before they begin.

This means less new retained players = less new revenue streams for behaviour = less new content for us = less retained existing players and even less existing revenue streams = even less new content for us = empty lobby simulator.

Just stop it people. Stop being selfish and think about the consequences as you are essentially eroding the games foundations beneath your feet because it's -your- game your killing. I don't think I can explain it any simpler than that so do you think you can grasp that simple concept? fantastic.

Without commenting on whether or not killer is "easy" to play or not, I do want to point out that pointing out players like you did (Otz, OhTofu, Fungoose, Scott Jund, Downey, and meangirl) isn't at all representative of the huge number of people playing killer, any more than if you pointed at someone like Ayrun (I think I have the name right there) and used him as an example as why survivor is ridiculously "easy" either.

All of those players are the in the best of the best category. Someone like OhTofu has been playing the game since its inception and has literally thousands and thousands of hours in the game. Saying "he goes days without losing, therefore the killer role is easy" is like saying "LeBron James or Steph Curry dominate when they play basketball, therefore playing basketball in the NBA is easy".

My own two cents is that, for the average player, it varies. I'm currently Rank 4 at both survivor and killer, and I try to play a 50/50 split. Last night my friend and I rolled through a bunch of relatively easy escapes against purple/red rank killers -- other nights, we'll get absolutely curbstomped. I'll play killer and dominate some days, while others I'm helpless against good squads no matter who I'm playing or what I'm running. As someone relatively new to the game but not brand spanking new (8 months), I think my experiences are more typical for the average player than what happens with top-level pro streamers.

As to the OP -- matchmaking is completely wacky half the time. In a number of survivor rounds my friend and I played last night, we got both of our teammates in the 17-20 rank (against Red rank killers no less). In the past week as killer I had matches against teams where everyone was around my rank (Red with the sprinkled in Purple), but at least a couple of matches I ended up against multiple brown ranks (and I'm pretty sure it wasn't a smurf/SWF situation in those). Those matches were disasters for the survivors, not surprisingly. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why that happens either.

Matchmaking like that (or when overmatched killers are out of their league against much better survivor teams) is the biggest problem this game has currently. A lot of what people complain about from both sides would be remedied if people actually played against people of their own skill level, and that far more often than not isn't happening.

Rank system / pip system is only tangentially related to player skill.

Survivors pip super easily, and most barely "belong" in red ranks.

Different killers have broken emblem systems, and pip differently despite playing the same. Someone DCing or suiciding on hook can black pip you as killer.

Dafuq, I got infinitely looped by rank 1 survivors as a rank 11 killer
