Hook Etiquette (How To Help Your Peers Milk Your Hook And Provide Safe Rescue)

Ok, I want to debunk a few things and make a few suggestions. Getting hooked isn't the end of the world; it does, in fact, provide a necessary respite for your fellow Survivors to do Generators. The time it takes you to get chased, downed, and hooked provides them time. Likewise, it also provides them with more time to work Generators while you are up there. Here are a few things for the Hooked and the potential Unhooker:

Hooked Survivor:

  1. Don't do Hook exercises. Please, unless you and your 4-Person SWF have worked out your own code and everyone is on the same page as to what those stupid movements mean, don't do them. Just hang quietly on your hook. This tells the other Survivors that you are in it for the long haul and understand they will be milking some of that time for Generators. Nobody is in agreement about what those movements on the hook mean. Some people think flailing your arms means "all is clear" while others say it is "the Killer is here" and still others think it means "hurry up" and so on, etc. So, hang there quietly.
  2. Don't try to Kobe unless you have to do so. Sure as hell don't do it if you see other Survivors coming your way. All you have done is shorten your time on the hook, wasted their time, and are taking an unnecessary risk.
  3. Don't suicide on the Hook. Have the decency to struggle as long as you can if that extra time can help the others. This is a 4v1 game. Sometimes the only contribution you have left is time. Be generous with it.
  4. If you do get to the 2nd Stage (Struggle Bus) don't give up and die. Even if you are mad that they didn't get to you before it happened. Sometimes crap happens. Sometimes people make mistakes. You struggle until the bitter end because one day you will want them to do the same for you.
  5. If you know that other guy is on the Hatch and there is no way he/she can get to you, do them a solid and sacrifice yourself. This is the only time I will ever suggest doing it. One of you might as well get out.
  6. Last but not least, don't be salty at the end of the game. Don't grief/shame the other Survivors for not saving you, or getting to you in time. What would be the point? The milk has already been spilt. Chances are you have been guilty of the same thing in the past, and without a doubt you will also fail someone going forward.

Potential Unhooker(s):

  1. Don't waste that hook time. The 1st Hook provides valuable Generator time. You want to get as much of it as you can before you (if you have to) go try to get the unhook prior to 2nd Stage. This means you should be working a Generator while they are being chased, working a generator while they are being downed, working a generator while they are being transported (unless you are doing something useful like a shoulder rescue with a pallet or sabotage or a flashlight, etc.). Never waste freebie time. It is like leaving money on the table.
  2. Don't be stupid. If there are three of you and one guy on the hook, it doesn't take THREE of you to go save him. All three of you should milk the time, and then one of you should go for the rescue while the others keep working those objectives.
  3. Don't farm other Survivors. If you can't do a safe rescue, try to come at it from another angle. Let them be on the hook a little longer if it means a safe rescue. What would be the point of farming them? They go right to 2nd Stage (Struggle Bus) if they get picked right back up. Use Borrowed Time if you have it. Try to take that hit for the Survivor if you don't. Sometimes the Killer shows up even when you thought you had a safe rescue so be prepared to take your turn on the hook. All farming someone does over and over again is kill them faster, and waste YOUR time which could be spent doing other things.
  4. Face Campers generally require multiple rescuers to even have a chance of success. This means you and the others should all work Generators and milk that time as much as possible. If you get the Generators up and the Hooked is still alive, then go 2 or 3-person team the Killer to try and get that person out. Harsh as it is to say, it is better three of you get out than none of you. None of you are leaving with the Generators not powered. And if you all get too altruistic against a Face Camper you are just playing into what would otherwise be a bad tactic.
  5. Heal the unhooked RIGHT AT THE HOOK if you know the Killer is on the other side of the map either picking someone up, or in a chase. If you know where the Killer is and they are safely removed from you, why not save time (time is Generators) and do a quick heal? Likewise, don't try to heal people at the hook when the Killer is too close. Move off and find a safe distance.
  6. Don't be salty at the end of the match. If you get hooked unhooking someone else and they fail to come back and save you, it isn't worth losing your temper about. Crap happens, and people make mistakes. You have made that one yourself, I'm certain (and will again).

So what I'm saying is that you should manage your resources to the best of your ability. Time is your most precious resource, and hooks provide TIME.

i almost never go for unhooks cause I can’t loop for ######### and don’t want them to get downed as soon as I do it either. So I leave it to other teammates to do it while I rush gens

I wish this was common knowledge by now, sadly it is not.

Only thing I would say, is when all else fails, if you have to farm me before second stage, do it. At least then I get a chance to use DS, and you may allow others to do the same.

It is better to get the farm and an opportunity to DS then to hit second. Obviously it is a last resort, and shouldn't be your standard unhooking practice.

Gonna have to hard disagree on the hook gymanistics part.

It's been code for a long time that hook gymanastics=camping. It's been on the wiki, unchanged for years.

I’d just like to add that if you unhook somebody, and the killer is busy chasing someone else, and there is a partially fixed generator near you then the generator takes priority over healing. ESPECIALLY if Ruin is active. It’s amazing how when I get saved and immediately run to the generator the idiot that unhooks me keeps signalling to me to let them heal me rather than take the hint to help me with the gen first. It’s my health, my time. You want to help me? FIX THE DANG GEN!!

But no one follows that anymore. When the game first launched that was fairly common knowledge, but nowadays people do it for no reason or telling you to hurry TF up

I always rush to unhook someone because I want them to have a chance at gens too. It sucks when you spawn next to the killer and get hooked and even with kindred see all of your teammates pumping out gens. I have died so many times on the hook due to gen rushing and honestly I prefer leaving those games because I like getting that co-op action in and the thrill of helping each other and such! And I always feel bad when someone suicides right away, especially when I was close to the hook. One piece of advice I have is to never rush an unhook near a killer, even if you have BT, since the person unhooked usually gets tunneled. But whatever, at the end of the day it's just a game and if we ever ended up in a universe like this I'd scream until someone unhooked me, not out of pain, but because I want those sweet BP babey!!! lol!
