Toxicity doesn't affect me specifically, but I worry for those it might affect
We all can agree that this game is toxic, very toxic on both sides. For most people, this might not even affect you other than just upset you for a bit. Seriously, I know that we have all gotten upset over this game, especially this game because of the balance issues, but I am not going to go over that right now.
Toxicity doesn't do much to most players of this game, at most it just enrages them for a bit. However, there are people who play this game who are depressed, or very stressed and just want to play a game to relax and have fun. But then they get messages in the endgame chat such as "Go commit die" or "trash killer can only win by killing survivors as killer". I won't get too into it here but the messages get MUCH more 'explicit' if you know what I mean.
I guarantee you that everyone experiences toxicity in this game almost on a daily basis. I personally have received some messages that I am almost glad I got from sore losers. I say this because at least they didn't say these things to someone who really doesn't need this in their life right now.
The worst message I got was from someone who was probably having a bad day already. I was told to commit suicide, eat feces and die, and send the video to him after slicing my wrists; he literally sent me his snapchat... yeah so this is the kind of behavior I am talking about (I myself am fine btw, I laughed about this). Now, imagine some person who is depressed or just really stressed reading that. Ok, sure that might not push them over the edge, but it might.
Now why? Why the hell are you telling someone to off themselves over a game??? I am going to be honest with you, I rage when playing this game. But I have never told someone to go kill themselves. In fact, I still say "gg, gl on next" every game until the insults start rolling out.
I really hope that my reports for harassment actually does something. But the sad part is that it probably doesn't, even though I have evidence of it. This is why an update to the reporting system needs an update. You know, among tons of other things BHVR ignores.
There is another person on the other side of the screen btw. They are humans, people tend to forget that sometimes.

"I really hope that my reports for harassment actually does something."
I mean, there's literally another thread where someone reported somebody for racism with screenshot proof and it was declared not enough info, so don't expect your report to do much.

Wow

Yep. A forum mod even stated "temporary bans do not show on people's profile, so assuming they got no punishment is wrong" however the fact the OP of the thread was told that it wasn't enough info at least suggests that they didn't receive a punishment. Also i'm not sure why you'd tell the person who made the report that it's "not enough info" if you were to then punish them anyways...

Amazing, well I did say that the report system needs to be updated.

Agreed that doesn't sound right.

Differing of age, maturity, emotional intelligence, reasons for playing, etc...all play a role in how "toxic" someone will be. Anyone who is prone to taking things too seriously in life is likely going to have a hard time truly enjoying anything in that life. Sadly, most everyone goes through these stages of caring too much about a given thing before eventually realizing it's a huge waste of energy to get so tilted over a game and doesn't provide any benefit to them. The quicker one can learn to enjoy the little successes of the game vs letting the little annoyances totally ruin your night, the better off you'll be in-game and in life. This doesn't mean letting all negative stuff just float over you without response, it just means learning when it's appropriate (and beneficial) to respond, and when it's not appropriate or beneficial.

I know I can't really do anything, but I wanted to know what people think of this. The toxicity in this game is pretty ridiculous.

I've only been playing just over a month now and received plenty of hate-mail myself - one message was warranted, actually (I facecamped in a few early games because my inexperience made me feel like that was my only option at the time to get a kill), but most of it is just plain mean for no good reason. Not exactly the nicest welcome to the game but, it is what it is lol.
1 -
lol, I actually didn't start to get hate until I started to play killer more and more. Apparently, it is illegal to kill survivors any way you can in this game.
2 -
If you've only been here a month, then what you did wasn't even face camping. That ship sailed a long time ago. You were just regular camping.

100% agree
BHVR, you really ought to make the chat panel hidden by default. Really, what goes on in there apart from banal "GG" comments and the most awful toxic garbage one human can say to another? There's nothing useful there. Keep it hidden unless you're with a SWF.

What I've determined in my short time here is, if your perk loadout and general play strategy (as Killer) beats mine (as Survivor), then it's illegal and you should change how you play, lol. I (as survivor) should be able to run whatever my preferred perks are, and play the way I want to play, and always escape. I shouldn't HAVE to run a specific perk to counter a playstyle I don't like.
That's the entitled mindset I have seen lol.

It really is. Survivors have so much more than killers, but they complain when the killer gets something good. I don't want to go into detail about this on this post, but it is definitely a thing. A good survivor team (of randoms) could probably still win (escape with everyone) without perks. Honestly, the perks I choose don't always take part in a chase (adrenawin, DS, etc) but I can still run the killer around for 5 gens worth. The fact that this is a thing you can do against a decent killer proves how much survivors have on top of perks.

Do we really need a PSA on why you shouldn't play online games when you're in a bad mental place? For real, I know what its like, and if I feel like playing DBD is going to stress me out more than bring me relief, I don't play it. You need to come mentally prepared or do something else, there's no third option.
I've never played an online game where people didn't complain about the report system not working. Its because in any game that's even semi-popular and has messaging/chat and a report system? There is going to be an abundant amount of reports, more than any reasonably sized staff could go through. Its there to make you feel good. "I reported that guy, he'll get his comeuppance!"
Toughen up or leave. It sounds horrible but anybody saying anything else is blowing smoke up your rear end. Don't fool yourself into thinking things like this have a solution. People are going to be jerks.

That was the same thread where I spent ages trying to convince a troll that death threats and racism over a video game aren't justified no matter what.

You know what? I completely agree with you, the fact that there are mentally unstable people playing a game (especially this game in particular) is quite irresponsible on their part. But that won't stop a lot of those people. So at the least, we could update the report system. Besides, this is only one reason updating the report system needs to happen. Even if it doesn't happen to someone not doing so great, it still drives people away from the game. Besides, it really is just a game after all.

There are ways to hide it like closing the end-game chat and making your steam private. Of course it doesn't completely exterminate toxicity but it reduces it at least.

Unfortunately, there are many like that.

I hear you, and I appreciate you trying to defend those people. Why do you say this game in particular has a lot of unstable people in it though? Genuinely curious.
0 -
I say this game in particular because unlike COD where things are more on an equal playing field, dead by daylight is not. So something like a tbagging person who just stunned you with only 1/15th of the pallets they have left to work with on a map is greatly amplified because you can do nothing about it. Stuff like this exists on both sides, feeling helpless is just so infuriating in this game because there is nothing you can do sometimes and the other side knows it while purposefully trying to make you upset over it by simply pressing crouch a few times on their keyboard, or smacking you on hook.

In that case I think you're completely off. Any game that has one team vs. another is prone to this, take LoL or even TF2 for example, you have two teams, and very, very rarely are the teams going to be even. In most cases, one team is stacked against the other, and that exact feeling of helplessness you described kicks in, it feels like the game was made for you to lose/win before it even began.
DBD is not special in this regard.

Ok Mr./Mrs. I Don't See Why Kobeing In Your Teammate's Face Is Toxic :P
But seriously, I agree with your point. We should all try to do better to be more friendly and less combative in game and in the chat.

You actually can turn off the chat! You can just click the arrow icon next to the text box to collapse it.

Well said.
Most players would never bother to consider what else is going on in another players life before sending a harder, abusive message.
Some people could be so close to the edge, that that one message could be the nail in the coffin.
1 -
I've never gotten any death threats while playing DBD, but I have gotten bullied and/or harassed a few times. I try my best to ignore it because people that find that stuff okay don't have a life and are just trying to get in someone's head because they feel the need to. It's honestly just sad that there are people that pull this kind of bs over a video game.

The only thing that I consider toxic besides hacking ofc is getting your fellow survivors killed on purpose happens to me once since then I rarely play survivor When it comes to survivors they find many things toxic. You walk away from a hook some one suicide rushes it gets the on hook you come back. “ such a face camping toxic noob”. While I can only think of one thing that’s toxic for kills and that is if killers lock some one in a corner for like. A hour

Yeah that wasn't my proudest post. I did not really think that one through. Didn't mean for it to get a little out of hand.

The new report system is pretty lackluster.
I think I got someone temporarily banned a few years back for asking to fight me IRL because he didn't like that I beat him in the game. He mentioned that he was 5'8" and weighed 235 pounds, attempting to intimidate me, as well as giving me his address.
Not only did this not intimidate me (as I am 6'2" 208 pounds) it gave me enough evidence that he was essentially physically threatening me. I just messaged one of the mods on Steam at the time and that was enough to get the job done, but that can't be done anymore I guess.

Lol it's all good, just giving you a hard time :)
