A Newcomer's Perspective

I happily found DbD via an Xbox gold offer months back. It is infinitely more fun and more of a challenge than the only previous assymetrical horror survival I'd played, Friday the 13th. At this point, I can claim to be, at best, an intermediate beginner, having played mostly Meg and being tragically incompetent with the killers I've tried, despite the videos I continue to watch for tips for improvement. Since joining the community, I have constantly read both sides of the arguments regarding survivors/killers being either too op or too nerfed and/or it being too easy to kill or escape. I can't be the only newish person for whom both escaping and making a sac is still a challenge, as I continue to try to improve both, which is all mostly a matter of logging the time necessary to gain experience. As I pursue that, I am taken aback regularly at just how petulantly toxic and obnoxious some obviously very experienced players have become, no doubt from frustration with issues and changes in the game. I understand that level of disgust with a loved game, but never have I allowed it to justify trying to drive people from the game. To all the super-toxic people who have played for the past 4 years, please, for the love of the Entity, take a break, find a new game, or find some other outlet. If you truly love the game, and you qualify as one of the aforementioned, stop being so blatantly obnoxious to those of us who are new to it and trying to enjoy it as much as you claim to have in the past.

It's a hard game which makes both sides feel much more invested in the outcome. Because if you want to do well you have to sweat for it or play like a scumbag... or both

    We aren’t all this way.

Some of us think broadly and abstractly, making it both easier to understand why some changes are implemented and can adapt better.

Some of us unfortunately have only played one way, with the same build, with complete tunnel vision, leaving us incapable of seeing the big picture with some of the ongoing changes for either survivor or killer.

If I love a franchise/game, I want it to thrive and evolve, no matter how much I might have been driven crazy by it. Case in point: Fallout 76. I'm a huge fan of the franchise but have never before seen a game faceplant so spectacularly at launch. Do I occasionally complain to others about the game? Of course, as do they, and then we recite our default mantra: This is a perfect game with no flaws. But there seems to be something above and beyond in DbD, that I have not seen elsewhere. The intensity and mean-spirited, personal nature of the griefing and taunting and trash-talking is just super weird to me. I don't get wrapped up in it; I just block people, but the guilty parties don't do the game a service by remaining.

Welcome to DbD, the game that singlehandedly caused me to turn off messages and friend requests on PS4. The toxicity sucks. Because it's an asymmetric game where the two sides are completely different, a lot of people choose a side, stick to it, and become very invested in it. They take the game way too seriously. Congrats on recognizing the problem and not being toxic about it yourself. I hope you're able to keep a laid back demeanor and enjoy the game for what it is (and what it is is a broken mess lol).

That was sincerely very interesting, insightful, and explains a lot. Thanks for the share! On a sidenote, I think "Humiliated by Twerking" might be the title of a future memoir. 😄

Welcome to the game and all of its toxicity. All I can say is keep playing both sides and then hopefully you can appreciate each sides perspective.

Try not to take it too seriously and just have fun. I have been playing this game for a long time and I still have games where I get zero kills, but then follow it with a 4k with no gens done.

You can't go into a game expecting 4 kills or a guaranteed escape or you will be sorely disappointed.
