If You Want The Devs To Make The Game Better, Read This
Yes, the "this" I'm referring to is an article, not my post. Yes, that is a little clickbaity, I apologise. No, I did not write the article, and yes, I know it's long.
But seriously, if you do genuinely care more about the game and its improvement than about trashing the devs, as the vast majority of people in this community claim to, this is worth the read.
Not only does it give some much-needed insight into why developers often seem like they are ignoring their players or taking ridiculous amounts of time to make simple changes, along with exploring the possibility that there might be reasons why they make "bad" design choices other than stupidity and incompetence, it also explains how to maximise your chances of delivering your feedback and actually having something done about it (and what not to do).
And this goes for all games, not just DBD, but I'm posting it here because I think there are some of us here who could do with some insight into the opposite perspective when it comes to this game we all love. And because I believe, like the author of this article, that healthy communication between players and developers is essential to the long-term success of any live game, and the best way to achieve that is grace and understanding on both sides. (I believe that so strongly, in fact, that I spent the better part of last year writing a thesis about it, and I wish I'd found this article back then, but that's another story.)
Just give it a read, if you really do care about seeing this game succeed and being a part of that. The worst that can happen is you'll be reminded of something you already knew.

lmao devs dont deserve pity shoving free bloodpoints and mtx down our faces

I've seen them ignore a list of nurse bugs in a thread to respond to someone else in that thread about how they feel a perk should work.
Most of those bugs still exist, have been reported hundreds of times and have never even shown up in a "known issues" list somewhere. They are just...pending in the void even to this day years later.
So you can understand my skepticism towards BHVR. I've taken more of a "I'll take whatever I can get approach" and if they fix literally anything and don't break more things than they fix, I am honestly happy. I just hope for the bare minimum and it's been a much healthier approach.

Nah fam, I'm pretty sure just throwing pointless insults at their faces works way better. /s

There has been plenty of well thought out posts and videos about this game that a plethora of players have spent a lot of time and effort writing out and producing. The devs of this game intentionally ignore most of it. They are also intentionally opaque and dismissive when it comes to discussions about balance decisions and reasons certain things are changed. When they talk about the state of the game and balance issues, they state it in a matter-of-fact way, implying that there's no way they can be wrong about it, and since they are so opaque about data regarding these decisions, we don't know if they're intentionally misleading or telling the truth. Difficult criticism of the game is almost completely ignored and in some cases, moderated. There isn't very good communication within BHVR, and we see that periodically in their patch releases, where they will sometimes say contradictory things, and as far as communication with the community, like I said, they are quite opaque about their inner workings, which leads to obvious issues and general mistrust in the community.
There seems to be a culture at BHVR that heavily resists community feedback, and the only way they're going to start to listen is if they're hit in their wallets, which is thankfully starting to happen.

The devs have pulled a lot of questionable stuff last year. The worst thing being they butchered the Halloween event into being a cash grab that can barely qualify as an event.
Then they never made an official statement on it! The only thing any of the devs said was when McCote said. " there should be something coming out for that" So not only did they give butcher one of their best events. They never apologized for the blatant cash grab!
As others have stated, many people in the community have made well spoken videos detailing what is wrong in the game, or with the devs decisions. None of these videos have accomplished anything, the devs have never made statements about them.
The only thing that has happened is degrading game quality due to sudden influxes of bugs and continual optimization issues that have been plaguing consoles for years now. They promised to hit the 60fps mark for all available consoles two years ago, which has clearly never happened.
We have been patient with these devs, but they have refused to listen to their own community. The worst of it is the utter lack of communication. They have hardly ever given us data on why they've made decisions. Essentially making us take Almo's word for it when Almo is relying on stats that could be heavily skewed by the horrible ranking and matchmaking, which they have refused to fix!
We have gotten nowhere by being nice to these devs. The only time they listen to us is when they manage to make something so bad that it makes everyone in the community angry. AKA what happened with the eternal blight.

Interesting read, you would think most of it would already be common sense but it surely is not (evidenced by some answers right in this topic lol). But there is also stuff in there I didn’t think about. Eg often I try to give solutions for problems instead of addressing the problems itself or why I think the current state may be problematic..

I’ve played other games and the mtx in this game aren’t too bad. The rift is optional and basic skins are cheap. DLCs are needed yes but aren’t too expensive

Bastion was changed, and there's been constant changes to characters based off of community feedback... not saying that invalidates the article, but just sayin

I mean Tru3 and Marth have been trying this for years with little success. The only way we're going to make an impact and have our voices heard is with our wallets and player numbers or if there's a competition that provides a better player experience and service.

its an easy concept.
if you want to be heard by the devs, provide constructive feedback.
tell them why you think something is too strong / weak and make suggestions on how to change it.
or make a post yelling at them without providing any form of constructive feedback and / or suggestions, wonder why you are being ignored and then complain that they wouldnt listen to their community.
the later gives more upvotes though.

That part was really interesting to me too, but it does make sense. Usually the developers have a much better sense of the bigger picture, what can be done, where and when, and the most valuable thing we can give them is experiential feedback because that's the one thing they can't get just from looking at the theory behind everything. (They're also professionals who've studied this stuff in a way most players probably haven't - not saying that means they're always right, just that I think it's very arrogant for players to assume that we have all the answers and the devs are just too stupid to realise.)
I have to say though, I am kinda disappointed with a lot of the responses to this thread. Probably I shouldn't be surprised, but I did have a little more faith in humanity than this and was really hoping that people would be open-minded enough to think critically about the points made in the article, particularly around the things players don't know about what goes on behind the scenes and why developers "don't listen". Instead, the majority seem to have just gone with the standard "game is trash and devs don't care and won't listen to feedback because they're bad at their jobs". Maybe that's true, of course, but I was hoping people might be able to put their prejudice aside long enough to entertain even the possibility that there's more to it than that.

Funny enough I just made 2 threads hopeing that the players will be helpful and that a mod sees it and shows it to a dev so that way the dev's can get the feed back that they need to make better or less questionable decisions. The 2 threads are survivor mains /killer mains please speak up

Gotta understand that a lot of veteran players have nothing but frustration after watching the devs ruin their experience bit by bit over a LONG stretch of time. Trashing the devs is all they have left.

Thanks for posting this... and for posting, in general.
Your contributions to the forum are always worth the time and effort, even when the members here respond in ignorance.
The article is exactly the practice players need to achieve the reality they desire. Unfortunately, the only ones who will benefit are those who take the time to read and follow through with the better approach to healthy, communicatory relationship with the developers. Hopefully that number increases.
Grace and Understanding go a very long way on the path to success.
Always pleasant additions to the discussion from you😌

Well, faith in humanity is probably the wrong approach XD sad but true. Especially when it comes to the unfiltered opinions that everyone is able to spread on the internet. :(
I'll come back to this thread when I fully read your linked article, because I already have mostly negative feedback about the dev notes. And I'll also delay my feedback thread to the point where I read that article. Let's see how many points I'll change after reading it :)

That article was nice and all, but sometimes game developers are just bad at their jobs.
The DbD devs are constantly facing a lot of scrutiny because many people feel their balance decisions are biased.
Sure, the devs nerf both killers and survivors, but you have to keep in mind the power balance of each side. In other words, the devs can nerf survivors, but overall the survivor side is still stronger.
I think a lot of people feel the devs aren't moving quick enough to make the game more enjoyable for the average killer. DS + Unbreakable hasn't been changed. One player in a SWF squad can use OOO to give the others aura info. Keys haven't been nerfed properly. There are still certain maps with abysmal design. The list goes on and on.
These are all really important game balance issues. And yet nothing has been done (despite tons of feedback over the years from expert players who know the game really well).
Don't get me wrong, I'm not condemning the devs. I just wish they would change their priorities.

Glad to hear you're giving it a go at least 🙂 Thanks for being so fair-minded.
"Emotional" is a charitable word for it, I would say. But you're not wrong.
I do understand that. I'm a veteran player myself (playing since about September 2016), just one who likes to give other people the benefit of the doubt and seemingly values compassion and self-control more than the average veteran on the internet. That doesn't mean I'm a pushover or that I don't have strong opinions about things that go on in the game, it just means I treat people like people no matter what they do, and I know how to express my opinions in constructive and respectful ways (which is, in fact, the best way to get them heard). Because at the end of the day, seeing necessary changes happen or understanding why they're not happening is more important to me than indulging my childish impulse to scream abuse at (or about) someone until they give me what I want.
Thank you, I appreciate it ❤️ Nice to hear that someone out there sees it the same way, at least!
