Noob Killer Question: Help me Understand Hexes Please!
Ok, so understand that I'm a noob (80 hrs into the game as killer) but I think I'm missing something about hex totems. I see that Ruin, Devour, NOED and others are super strong, but it seems like every game I play with them the totems get cleansed so fast that I'm not getting much value out of them. Ruin is so strong but when the survivors notice all the regression on gens then the totem gets cleansed. Many times the red team I'm playin against has totems cleansed before I get any value out of them at all. I'm looking at builds now that don't need Hex totems because I'm so frustrated at not getting value before cleansing. What am I missing? I see talk about Ruin and undying being so strong but wouldn't finding and cleansing totems take care of that? I've gotten grief in post game chat for running NOED but I haven't played a single game where the survivors discovered that I have NOED and then DIDN'T find it and cleanse it. Why should I run any perks that need hex totems?
Is this an issue of me needing to keep "gitting gud" and as I improve then maybe my play will keep survivors occupied and not looking for totems? I really don't know. Any advice from game veterans would be appreciated. Thanks peeps!

lottery perks.

Hex perks just kinda suck. The totems spawns are so bad, my disabled 95 year old grandma could spot them in a heartbeat. I recommend just not using hex's. The only thing that made then somewhat good (Undying) got nerfed.

Your observation is correct. Totems get cleaned fast at the higher ranks, which is why the devs decided to nerf the only perk to guard your hexes (undying) in the next release. Soon most matches won't use hexes at all.
The only one to run is probably Noed now.

You pretty much understand them.
They're supposed to be "High Risk High Reward" perks, though totem placements can either make them "All Risk No Reward" or "No Risk All Reward".

Hex perks were "supposed to be" really powerful, countered by the fact that they could be cleansed. However, many survivors can't be bothered looking for them, so the devs haven't bothered to hide totems, despite it being brought up countless times. You may get lucky and have one spawn in an out of the way place, but more likely they will be out in the open.
When undying was added, that made for a better situation. If a hex was cleansed it would get transferred to a dull totem, keeping the hex in play. Survivors would have to cleanse multiple totems. Many survivors don't like looking for totems, so they nerfed undying too. It's sad because there are multiple ways to find hex totems, but they can't be bothered using them, so nerfs.

They're very risky, but can be immensely powerful. Once you get something like Devour Hope stacked and running, survivors will be scrambling to cleanse the totem ASAP.
Certain killers with map mobility or traps can do a fantastic job of defending their hex totems provided they can get there before the survivors can. Undying still helps in that regard, as someone like Billy can drop everything to defend their totem, or Hag can just trap her totem. The sad reality of Hex totems is that even if you set out to defend them, the survivors might just spawn on top of it and leave you with no chance.

Yea..if you come across red ranks and we realize right away you got Ruin, 1-3 of us will go on a hunt for the hexes. If no one seems to be going, I take it upon myself. I'm getting that annoying hex out of the way.
But honestly, you shouldn't even be facing red ranks as a newer player. The matchmaking is just really really bad. So those games will more often than not, not end up well for you. And b/c we don't see ranks in the lobbies (anymore), you have no way of telling other than going off of their outfits, charms, etc (lol).

Yeah I picked up Legion a few days ago and for about 3 games faced similarly-ranked players but then the reds came a-calling and away went the long back-and-forth matches.

Hex perks can be strong but risky. The main purpose of ruin for example is to stall the game. Most people who run it are aware that it will get destroyed within the first 30 seconds. But for them it's worth the risk because they want that regression when the game starts so that the gens don't pop instantly. The old ruin's purpose before it was changed was to get a few people to look for it when the game starts. You might get lucky with a totem placement and survivors won't be able to find it....but that's extremely rare. If you really want your hex to stay alive, add thrill of the hunt and undying to it. While it will work on a killer with high mobility vs solos, swf will demolish all 3 or 4 of you perks in no time. I wouldn't recommend doing it for anything but devour hope. I don't think you're missing anything. Hex perks are usually cleansed extremely fast. When you equip a hex perk think of it as a gamble. Also when you equip noed, you're playing the part of a game that matters the most with 3 perks.

Here is what you need to know about hexes:
You equip them, then they die in the first minute of the game. Then you stop equipping them.

Full explanation
every trial (match) starts with 5 dull totems
they can be cleasned by survivors in 14 seconds
you can have up to 4 hex perks in a build
almost all hex perks take up 1 totem and turn it into a hex totem
haunted grounds specifically turns dull totems into hex totems because its a trap (once one is cleansed the perk activates and the other becomes dull)
most hex perks have an active effect while they are active (not cleansed) and lose their effect when cleansed
some hex perks include
slowdown
tracking
instadowns
traps for survivors to cleanse
and pallet blocking ability
depending on how many hexes you have depends on how many dull totems become hex totems
each hex is paired to a totem and when its associated totem is cleansed its effect is permanently removed from the game to make it risk / reward because some hexes are very powerful
however totem spawns are lacking on most maps or op on others so its always a gamble whether you get your value out of them
