Who would you balance DBD for?
Hardcore DBD players or Casual DBD players?

Hardcore, casual players lean more towards what will work for them over what works for the game. It's why I feel pampered as a survivor.

The inbetween

For players who play both sides and have a decent time. Although for balance changes I'd change things more frequently rather than the 2 or so month interval they do now. To me the issue isn't who they balance for it's how frequently they test changes and how long it takes to make a decision on the right choice. Would honestly like to hear an internal debate with the team to understand this. Not the after thought logic where they come to a conclusion and summarize everything but a full length conversation on stuff like let's say DS. Would give a lot of insight on how they make decisions.

Hardcore, as all games that want to be competitive and balanced do.
When you balance towards the hardcore and you lose a game it's because of your skill level.
When you balance towards casuals and you lose it can simply be because of poor balance, even if you played perfectly.
The difference between these two is one leaves the outcome of a game in your control and the other does not. This makes the choice obvious to me. Someone should always be losing because they played bad or worse than the other player, not because of poor balancing.

Hardcore.
The casuals can get better, the hardcore can't get worse to work with balance balanced around casuals.

Why would you balance around hardcore players when you have perks for casual builds?
That's already the problem with this game. You have unbalanced built-in mechanics (Camping, Tunneling, Slugging) while the opposite side has to counter them via a perk. Not only that but you have non-meta perks that would be completely obliterated if the game thought everyone was playing "hardcore mode".

Camping, Tunneling and Slugging aren't mechanics, they're player behaviour that's reinforced by the game's inability to introduce mechanics that reward playing properly.

Any competitive game(yes this is one of those. Google the definition and tell me I'm wrong) it's better to balance it around the hardcore. If you keep making the game easier then the people who are actually skilled can't shine because everyone can do it. Look at what they are doing to Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter over the last few years and you'll see what I'm talking about. Casuals don't tend to stick around either. Once a new game comes out they play that.

As with most things, it should be balanced toward the average. Casual players will improve, and hardcore players will always be able to squeeze more out of what they have. The real problem is that the game cannot matchmake properly. If casual players are teamed with, or against other casual players, everything should be fine. If hardcore players are teamed with/against other hardcore players, everything should be fine. The same for those in the middle. The sad thing is that doesn't happen, so trying to balance the game where new players are teamed with/against players with thousands of hours of gameplay, is ridiculous. The matchmaking fix should have been their top priority. And nothing should have been buffed or nerfed until they got that done. Now the game is just a mess.

Five casual players playing a hardcore game...are still casual and going to goof around.
Five hardcore players playing a casual game are going to break it or establish 5,000 rules until all you have is Fox only, No items, Final Destination.
Just saying.

Uh, you do realize what the definition of game mechanics is right?
They are not a player behavior they are rules that exist to guide a player’s actions or moves , they specify how the game will work for people who play it, i.e. Mechanics.
In the case of DBD they are built-in which means that most “hardcore” killer players will often use and abuse them.
So I ask again, why would you balance around hardcore players when the survivor side is heavily reliant on perks and the killer side is not.

I actually don't know how to achieve this, but I want a scenario where casual players can load into a match and have a chance to do well without needing to put in thousands of hours or act like sweatlords. However you balance for that.

This game was originally created with escaping being rare. This changed because they added SWF and never balanced the game around it even though it completely breaks the game. The result was the devs catering to "casually hardcore" (Aka people who only play dbd and aren't very good but like to win consistently) survivor playerbase and by extension the hardcore killers because you HAVE to be a hardcore killer to really play, especially now that even at rank 20 you will be matched with red ranks. I see brown rank killers all the ######### time.
The point is dbd is a bullshit game that was broken by the lack of will power to balance the game how it should have been all along. It 110% should go back to its casual roots because look at the game now. There are like 100 killer mains left and they're all sweat lords. Every game i get a tryhard or a literal baby, by catering to survivors they have made BOTH sides so much less fun then they could be and the toxic community that the devs have created don't even understand that.
I hate this game tbh its just every horror fans wet dream. ######### this game, they will probably never fix it its not worth playing. But they add like Pinhead or Sidney then see i have no choice, my love for the characters outweighs my hate for the game design. ######### Ash Williams, Laurie Strode, and Cheryl "god-slayer" Manson VS Ghostface on the Saw map????? Like holy ######### that is amazing it makes me want to play the game right now i just wish someone else was in charge of it because this is the holy grail of crossovers! It can survive on star power alone and has soooo much potential they just don't have the spine to upset survivor mains who spend 100s of dollars on cosmetics BUT THEYRE ALREADY PISSED BECAUSE THEY MADE KILLERS PLAY THE MOST UNFUN WAY POSSIBLE FOR A CHANCE TO WIN.
Man just put me in charge of this ######### ill take care of it.

Casual Players, 100%.
You cannot fine-tune an Asymmetrical game for hard-core players and still retain any vestiges of fun or flavor that expands the playerbase. It will inevitably lead to 2-4 killers with the same builds and the same 4-perk meta survivors.
Balance the game around casuals first and foremost, then deal with the hard-core players. Hard-core players will sweat regardless and find the most efficient, efficacious builds/strategies within any set of circumstances whether or not you cater to them.

They should hold tournaments with decent prizes and balance around the outcome.
Last year, we had a streamer organized tournament with a prize pool of 15.000€. We need something like that.
Hardcore players could show what's possible and new or average players could learn some things.
Tournaments helped LoL and R6.

It should be casual imo. Casual players still use meta builds and killers, so it's not like those meta perks are never gonna be touched. If they balanced around hardcore players all you'd ever see is the same set of perks and killers being nerfed, with underused killers and perks being ignored.

Hardcore:
To balance for casuals is to try to completely idiot proof the game.
There will always be a dumber idiot meaning you will always be going deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole of idiot proofing.
Balancing for "Hardcore" aka people who know how to play the game competently will have a more stable balancing point for the game.

Hardcore.
Casual players i.e. the "bad" survivors don't do gens. That's it, it's not rocket science, you hold a button on a generator and you win the game. For some reason this goes over most peoples heads and they decide to take a scenic tour around the map.
Looping etc isn't too hard for the most part on certain maps against certain killers but the biggest difference separating good survivors from bad is the fact that one uses every single second to sit on a gen and the others walk around the map and do anything but gens.
Balancing for hardcore isn't asking people to do anything hard or complex you're only asking bad survivors to just sit on gens for a little bit. It's not exactly an unreasonable request.

I'm still not sure what I would balance for...The Asymmetrical nature of the game throws me off

Hardcore players
because you actually have a fun balanced game.
the current dbd is casual balancing and its a complete dumpster fire.

A group of my clones all playing against/with one another.

Casuals always asking to buff/nerf things that don't need any change and have working counterplays they don't know yet. So balance game based on casual playerbase would be absolute mess for hardcore playerbase. But balancing on expirienced players opinion would make this game harder for beginners.
Beginners become expirienced someday, but expirienced players can't unlearn to beginner level.

If I try and sweat my balls off to win I’m not having fun.
