Please leave the archives on the last tome viewed/interacted with, not the most recent.
I took a break during tome 2, now that I'm back I'm going back and finishing those challenges.
EVERY TIME I finish a challenge, and want to select a new one, the archives page defaults to the "current tome" (which isn't even current any more) and I have to go into the compendium, pick the tome I want, THEN collect my reward or select a new challenge.
All I want is for it to default to opening the last tome you interacted with so I don't need to go through 2 extra menus for every challenge. The entire design of keeping old tomes is to be able to go back and finish them, so why make it so cumbersome?

It does if you have a challenge selected but as soon as you complete it, it goes back to the last page of the most recent one, so you have to hunt it down again to collect the reward and select the next one.

Great suggestion!
The current UI makes it a pain to navigate to and select these challenges from older tomes because the archives always open to the most recently released tome instead of the one where challenges were most recently completed.
If I just finished a challenge in Tome 1 Page 2, it's way more likely that I will want to visit that page next instead of getting booted back to Tome 5 Page 4.

I also agree with this. I have many challenges in all of the tomes yet to do, and would love for the game to leave me in the last tome I was in.
