Why do you keep playing this game?

I've been playing DbD for a month now, and found my way to rank 4 (the first red rank) on both sides. But it seems to me almost everyone is miserable playing this game, so I'm very torn about investing more time on it.

Coordinated SWF's make the game unfun for killers, which then have to be too strong for uncoordinated solo-q survivors, which in turn "sabotage" the game for SWF's, thus creating an unending loop where everyone is unhappy most of the time.

A good part of the community seems to expect this to be a competitive game, but everything I have seen the devs saying so far is almost the opposite of what proper balance for a competitive game should look like. Nothing is meant to be fair, and apparently by design. This should appeal to casual players, but I don't think anything will ever appeal to them in an exclusively PvP game.

I'm really unsure why I should sink in any more time on this if it's not possible to see this as a serious competitive game, but also not as a chill casual one. Any thoughts?

Because despite the BS that happens, most of the time I find myself enjoying it.

I still enjoy it but my secret is that I play like 3 rounds then switch to another game.

The key is to not give a sh** about the outcome of the game, or how others play it. Play for fun, be content with little successes in every trial, and somehow you'll manage to enjoy it way more. The weird part is even the biggest whiners and ragers, no matter how much they TALK about hating this or that in the game, they continue to play it. So, they're able to move on and deal with it, they just need to train themselves to be able to deal with it in the moment.

I haven't found another game to get addicted to. I'm getting burnt out of Dbd because its so repetitive, but due to the fact there are no other games like it, it's hard to stop coming back to it. I may just force myself to stop playing for a bit to see if I can break the addiction.

I loved the game but it has taken a turn in the past year. I don't stop mainly because I have spent to much money on the game I would feel like I had wasted it if I just stopped.

Idk, I really like this game a lot, I play it constantly except these days, I took a week off the game since if I play survivor I get tunneled or facecamped to death and I refuse to use DS.

When I play killer I usually read survivors like a text book since there aren't that many good survivors.

I'm a pvp gamer and the disadvantage of being in a 1v4 is the reason why I keep playing.

Plus over the years this game has improved a lot except bug wise.

The highs of this game are incredibly high for me, as when I'm being challenged as a killer and play well I feel great about my ability.

The lows of this game are lower than any other game I've played. Last night when a Bill body-blocked me from getting a hook on his buddy during the EGC and they both ran off and teabagged at the gate I felt genuine anger towards him and had to stop playing after that game and call it a night.

The fun factor in this game is so incredibly high. When it's fun it is REALLY fun. When the game is toxic and negative and you are incredibly outmatched due to the matchmaking (like I was against those THREE identical Bills in that match) it is tough to take. I do find myself having different experiences when I'm being silly with a killer I don't like or run (Huntress, Billy, Trapper) and trying to get a challenge done vs trying to play well vs a team that is better than me and makes me look foolish.

That's why I play, when the game is fun it is REALLY fun.

This is going to be a pragmatic, shoot from the hip evaluation. I hope it helps. You are going to get a ton of people tell you I'm wrong, so take it with a grain of salt. My credentials to make these observations are that I've been playing video games since Pong. I'm in my fifties now, and still strive to be the best. This is a habit I picked up from wanting MY high score to be all the ones showing, pushing everyone else off in the Arcade.

    1. Of course DbD is a competitive game. There are very few games that are not.
    2. Games do not have to be balanced or fair to be competitive; that is a misconception.
    3. There is no such thing as a "casual" game, because the game doesn't decide how the players approach it.

This game is an unfettered, in your face, battle royal. Four people try to get out alive while a maniac tries to kill them. You earn Emblems by doing certain things successfully. You earn Blood Points for doing certain things. The other side has goals which are mutually exclusive from yours. It doesn't get more competitive than that. And beyond Emblems and Blood Points, there is the mutually accepted notion that 3-4K is a Killer Win, 2K is a Draw, and 0-1K is a Survivor win. Do you see where I'm going with this? We aren't sitting around putting a jigsaw puzzle together as a group project. We aren't knitting an afghan for Nana. We are striving against one another, plain and simple.

Life is competitive and it isn't fair either. The sooner people accept the obvious, the happier they will be.

In closing there are two types of people, those that rise to the challenge regardless of how the deck is stacked against them, and those that cry off and/or complain endlessly about how unfair things are. It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that the people who spend less time complaining (or quitting) about the unfairness of life tend to succeed.

Well, I decided to grind them back. The last DLC I bought was the Stranger Things one. I don't spend a single dime on costumes and such, well, because that is just dumb. If I get it as a gift for something ingame, fun. If not, I am not spending dollars there.

All the new characters I buy through ingame rewards.

And I advise everyone to do the same.

Tell me about it. Yesterday I was playing PH and a survivor was about to vault a window. When I was about to initiate POTD-nuke-protocol I got a MASSIVE fps drop. My screen legit froze for nearly 2 seconds.

After those 2 secs my PH stood still, POTD was canceled and the survivor was gone.

I legitimately laughed. Those moments feel like a classic meme at this point.

Man,if i would get a cent everytime a FPS drop screwed me over then i would already have like 10 next gen consoles.

You would think that they would at least be able to fix the FPS drops if they aren't able give us the stable 60 FPS they were aiming for.

I guess being forced to pay like 500€ is optimization enough for them :^)

Sometimes, I'm not sure why I keep playing. The game has fun moments, sure, but sometimes it's also very frustrating. I have spend too much time on it now, 3 years, so it's hard to give up after such a long time and after everything I played before. I think new players should play until they decide it's not fun anymore and then switch to other games, really and if I was a new player and I knew what I know now, that's what I would have done.

Some of my friends only like to play PvP, unfortunately. So I only have a few choices to play with them and they're quite addicted to DBD. So that's one reason I play this game as often as I do.

I also play as killer and do solo eventually, but not as much as I play with my friends. Most of the times I'm with them I have fun. If we have enough friends we even do KYF and that's awesome, because I can try perks I still don't have on ranked mode.

Besides, both as killer or survivor, there are days the game is really fun, there are days that it isn't. When it's not, I usually switch to another game. Also, I try to play this game at least every now and then because I bought quite a lot of skins and I wanna get some value out of them, even if it's to lose... lose pretty hahahahah

But I try to stay away from red ranks. In my experience, there you don't usually see much variety on perks or anything, so it's less fun too.

Because I still find it fun the overwhelming majority of the time.

Maybe I just care less about the "bad matches" than the average, maybe it's because I don't main the game and barely play anything else, maybe it's something else - I just enjoy my time playing the game more or less no matter what happens.

To answer your question there are only 2 reasons why this game is still worth playing:

Until these two get nerfed I'll have a reason to keep playing.

I only play it so I can do archives to save up challenges and then level up new characters asap when they come up and get new perks for the rest of the killers. If they didn't have archives I'd just play when new killer comes out, max him out and the rest of the crew, earn 1 million bp and wouldn't touch the game for another 2 months. I like to keep killers and survivors "up to date" so to speak.

Edit: at this point I just hope that the devs of The Callisto Protocol will consider making asymmetrical multiplayer game mode in addition to their game.

I don't think he will, I was just saying that because that would be the requirement for me to stop playing this game sooner. He's absolutely not a weak killer either, he's really good. It's just the general opinion on the forums that certain killers like Demo are low tier even though he has one of the best map mobility tools in the game if you set it up right, and a power that can shut down the strongest tiles in the game. I definitely recommend buying Demo, he's really rewarding and fun to play.

Yeah on paper I thought his abilities seemed awesome (e.g. teleport for map control and shred for loops, e.g. ez shack).

Anyway thanks for that, I might pick him up soon. Sorry to take this thread off topic a little.

I still play the game because I enjoy the competition, love the characters, love the gameplay... and invested tons of time and money. In my opinion, it is a competitive game, and I play it like that. But that's the thing: You can only play it on this way, when you have thousands of hours of experience, and a lot of players have that experience. For casual players, once they get into the red ranks, the game is terrible, I can understand that, but it is what it is. Everyone plays the game in their own way, and if you don't have fun with your way of playing, the game is not for you, or you have to change your style of play. The problem can only be solved if Behaviour adds a "Casual" mode and a "Competitive" mode. And I think that's going to happen, otherwise a large number of players could leave the game, and nobody wants that.

I love dbd its probably been the game that's had the most inpact on my life except halo of course. In fact if it werent for dbd i wouldnt have met my bestfriend and sadly if that were the case she may not be around today. Luckily we play dbd almost everyday.

I think that's why alot of complain alot about it...because we care, because we want it to succeed!, because we love it

This. He brings a lot to the table and he is one of the last Killers you want to 3 gen yourself on. Not bottom tier but could use some add on changes.

I may have a frustrating game here and there but generally I have a pretty fun time playing on either side. But I do wonder why some people play this, especially some of the super sweaty red rank SWFs. They get a 4 man escape - baby killer you suck, you kill 1-2 of them - baby killer you suck, you get a 4k - they will find SOMETHING to complain about every single time. They never seem to enjoy their matches no matter what happens. I don't understand what they get out of this game.

Similar to other comments, DBD is basically its own game category because there is no other PvP horror game similar to it other than Friday The 13th which is dead due to the lawsuit.

Once you play this game enough, you begin to either love it, hate it, or sometimes both. For me & many others, it is definitely a love-hate relationship because although this game has a lot of turn-offs & balancing issues, we still play it because there is nothing else to really compare it to.

Still I play even more DBD for some reason..it is strange. But I still like the game but why I play so much DBD I can't explain fully.

The competitive scene keeps me playing. I'm usually very bored otherwise.

It's also annoying when I can win 99% of games with a chill build/add ons and then get that one gamer lobby and take and L I didn't have to take. Like I have to make the game super unfun for most players or take unnecessary Ls every now and then.

What I'm trying to say is playing comp matches against comp players is fun because it's expected that everyone plays optimally, and the players are actually good for the most part. Nobody is seriously complaining about camping/tunneling/gen rush/etc, because those all come with good DbD gameplay. That's what keeps me playing.
