Why does Steam have such a hard time with patch updates?
This happens every time a new chapter or patch comes out. It only happens with dbd, and it's only Steam that has this issue. Other launchers like Battle.Net or Epic Games have absolutely NO issue when it comes to games.
The recent patch was only ~3.5GB when it came to the update on Steam. With friends wanting me to play, I set to updating.
Only, it didn't update. The Download finished, and as soon as it came to finalising the package, my Disk flat lined, and download time went from 30 seconds to <4 years.
Other games I play on Steam that have Patch Updates, like FFXIV, seem to download fine and I have absolutely no issue when it comes to the Download. It is ONLY ever Dead By Daylight, and it is EVERY update that comes out, not matter how big, or small the update is.
I've tried everything short of formatting my PC, and I don't have the time, or the patience to give that a go. The Steam Forums and Reddit only gave suggestions I've tried (That didn't work), so I come to these forums as a last resort to see if anyone else has this issue, or if my time with dbd is done.
Thankyou in advance!

This is most likely on your end, or possibly an issue with the specific Steam server you're connecting to. (You can change it under Steam (top left button) -> Settings -> Downloads -> Download Region (don't worry, most countries have tons of download servers, you don't have to change actual region)
That said, I'd assume it's an issue with your hard drive. This absolutely has never happened to me with DBD or any other game.

I don't have issues with the patches, Check with steam, your pc, network and ISP.

I've checked everything and have to every single patch/update. I don't have issue with anything BUT DBD on Steam, which is why I'm so... tired of it I suppose. It's the same fight every time regardless what I try, or change.
Everything here I've already tried and it made no difference.

Honestly it just kind of sounds like your hard drive is dying. Hard drives aren't exactly known for their stellar consistency when they begin to die. And DBD might just be on the sectors that are failing, while, say, FFXIV is not.
Now, that's a big assumption, but there's an easy way to put it to the test and either confirm it/prove it wrong: delete DBD and move the installation to a different drive. Please don't tell me your system only has one drive. Because that would be bad news in the event of a drive failure.

I tried this and it made no difference. The only thing I've found that works is just... Walking away from my PC and letting it do it's own thing for 8+ hours until the bar below the play button fills.

I really don't know, then. It could be Steam, but I'd expect it to happen with more than just one game. Generally when you find people who have Steam updates that take forever, hang, or try to redownload huge chunks of files, it's for like every game on Steam. I can't really find any examples of it being one particular game, and I don't have this issue at all with DBD on Steam, updates take a few seconds.

I have similar problems with dbd, it takes a lot longer to finish updating than (most of) my other games.
My brother has the same problem (and he has a far better computer than I). He tried changing steam servers but that didn't help. He blames dbd's optimization.
I also think that I heard a streamer say that he has problems with dbd's updates but I'm not 100% sure, but it seems like you're not the only person with this problem.

do you check your installation of dbd? do you use a 3rd party program to change your icons? oh wait... no you won't admit to that here on the official forums because that's against the EULA. what logs do you check? what do you do? honestly I'm a pc tech and worked in the retail market where people bring their pc's in to be fixed. just a few years ago I had a computer come in, saying their pc is running slow. I turn it on and am presented with a windows 8 installation modifier, made things look like windows 7 again, look it up and see that it is reported by EVERY single internet security program company as having malware and spyware. then there was so many other programs starting up taking up memory and the system basically had 1 gig of ram remaining before the user could even do that. so far it wasn't bad just a slow start up, then open up their browser (they said that's where the real slow down is) and then blamo 15 tabs opened! I call the client and ask them about this and they said oh yea every tab was needed, every program was needed because their best friend who's worked with computers for the last few years said they needed it all.
I explained what was needed to be done and when they got their computer back they were amazed. I had removed all the extra programs and the computer worked fine. those 15 tabs were book marked and I explained more about how the tabs did not need to be open all the time unless they wanted them open. they took it home, brought it back 6 hours later and said it was messing up again. they had put a flash drive to re-install all the programs that were malware back on and this time it wouldn't start back up. they spent a total of 400 bucks just because they installed programs that were known to be viruses even after being warned not not. can you believe it? i'm sure you think it didn't happen well that's your choice but many times people say they know computers when they know just how to operate them and not how it actually works.

it could be windows. though as it was said it should affect other programs but it CAN be affecting just one. I'd suggest that you update windows. if that doesn't work I'd recommend a full back up and reinstall of windows, then steam, then dbd. see if that happens (before you install anything beyond windows, your internet security and then steam and dbd)

This still happens to me. Only DBD does this on Steam, on a M2 SSD. Task manager reported steam using up 250 MB/s for about 30 minutes before the patch finished. The patch in Feb 2021 was only about 2.8GB or something and it finished downloading in 2 minutes. The rest was all just waiting for some kind of unpacking. My friends have this issue too, last I saw it was in the Twins update.

I get this, only DBD doesn't matter if it is on a 7200RPM HDD, a SSD or M.2. It says unwrapping or something and usually takes 20-30 mins annoying when the updates download in 3-5 mins

The issue is mostly the game engine and how it's resources are packed, but also for some reason Steam seems to have some corrupted packages for dbd.
Well at least that's what the Steam client sometimes gives an error for and then re-downloads something.
Can't really say who should be blamed for this but I suspect that it is Steam's fault
