New to DBD - Need some n00b advice
Hey,
I’m new to DBD (ty Game Pass), I’m rank 20 playing Jake, I have friends that play regular on weekends who have said I should give it a try (they say it’s great fun with friends), unfortunately I’ve not had chance to team up with them and just spend my time in PUG/Random lobbies. I keep having the Killer hook me early on and then “team mates” unhooking me directly in front of the Killer (resulting in a second back-to-back hooking as the Killer just focuses injured me fresh off the hook) this is usually the end of my game as I always fail the button mashing test thingy every time, I’m even track-n-fielding it and still can’t press it fast enough.
Are there any ways to prevent people unhooking me when it’s not safe?
Is there anything I can do to prevent or break focus from the Killer thats attached to me worse than a freaking face-hugger?
And how do I beat the struggle game/button thingy or is it simply impossible and just gives a team mate a last dash-attempt to unhook you?
I want to enjoy the game because my friends all say it’s great but my first evening of playing has me ready to uninstall it as I just can’t get enjoyment from it :(

Unfortunately no, there's no way to prevent situations like this from occuring, and the only thing you can really do is either not get caught, or use the perk "Decisive Strike" from Laurie Strode. She, however, is a DLC character that costs money and considering you're new to this game, I wouldn't advise sinking in lots of money just yet.
In terms of how to avoid the killer, there are a few things you can do:
- When you run, you leave scratch marks behind. If you're not confident being chased, try walking between places and only running when you know you've been spotted.
- Whilst running, if you vault a pallet, a window, drop a pallet, or miss a skillcheck, it lets the killer know where you are. Again, try not to do this when you're in a chase.
- The perk "Iron Will" from Jake Park is incredibly useful for remaining hidden.
- Bringing in a med-kit (just make sure you have 16 charges minimum) can help you heal up in a pinch
In terms of the struggle mechanic, it just involves pressing the button in a rhythmic fasion until either you die or someone saves you. You have 60 seconds. If you find yourself dying before then, try speeding it up, just don't go too fast.
And if it's any reassurance, then these tactics become less common the higher you rank up.

Unfortunately, you can't stop your teammates from killing you (it even happens to people with thousands of hours playing at rank 1). But you can increase your specific skill. To be a good survivor, you must become skilled in two things. Your efficiency (on everything), and maximizing distance as much as possible when in a chase.
Is someone on a hook while you are on the polar opposite of the map? Keep doing a gen. Is the killer off in the distance and not chasing you? Just find a generator. The problem with a lot of new players keeps hiding when the killer is not on them. It can be a bit nerve-wracking, but I promise the killer will most likely not even notice you. Don't be this person.
When playing solo, run kindred. Always, it is literally a godsend of a perk because it gives you information you need when you need it. It is a free perk that any survivor can get, please run this perk at all times when in solo queue.
To increase your survivability and usefulness in a chase, I recommend learning how to loop and juke as a survivor. Watch Cru5h explain how to do so, he has other videos for different maps as well. I implore you to watch a few videos on DBD, same for the killers). As for streamers to watch, I recommend Otzdarva for sure, just watch his videos and streams while listening to what he says.
PS: Don't get scared away from playing killer, and if you want to play this game frequently then get BBQ and chilli (BBQ) for your killers to get more points faster and we're gonna live forever (WGLF) from the survivor (free survivor, you have him) if you want to get more bloodpoints.

unfortunately you are starting during a rift event, instead of playing the game "normaly" you see players just trying to get their rift objectives done. really sucks

Here's something for your technical abilities playing survivor.
It's really outdated, but this video got me far starting down the path when I first started playing DBD. Still some relevant fundamental tools in here tho to add to your surv kit. Play both sides as your game develops, but it would be beneficial to start on one side at first and commit to it until level 50 so you can get some good teachable perks and hopefully something decent on the shrine. Prestieging your character isn't really worth it unless you want the cosmetics, so it's alright to just have a max character that you don't prestige and use that to play on while you build up. If you play killer, BBQ is really one of the essential killer kit perks at any ranks, so keep an eye out for that and get it as quick as you can for more BP to pump into other characters. I'm sure others will chime in with other suggestions so I'll leave that to them.

So, im a killer main, so take my advice with a grain of salt
You can map the struggle button to your mouse wheel if playing on PC, seems to help a lot of streamers
When you're on first hook, there's a secret way to tell your team mates when its safe to unhook. If the killer is near, repeatedly attempt to unhook but cancel it before the attempt bar fills up. Most people knows that the "fake self unhook attempt" means it's not safe to unhook yet. But not everyone knows this, and a small percentage if the community thinks it means the opposite.
Don't drop a pallet immediately after getting hit, run to another tile
Learn the killers and their perks so you know what strategies to use against them. Playing killer can improve your survivor skills
Don't panic if you hear the heartbeat. Slowly walk to a hiding position unless you've been spotted
Survivors are slowed after falling (unless you use balanced landing), killers are not. Try to avoid dropping down from somewhere after being hit because it will waste your speed boost
If someone's being face camped, give up on them and do gens.
Always do bones in case of NOED

Thanks for the replies, I’m a few days in now but I keep seeing the same activities over and over from both Survivors and Killers, if I’m first hook I might as well suicide as there is little point in hanging around just to be face-camped or hook-farmed while scoring no points myself...
I just had a game where I was on second hook, Killer chasing me with rest of team on zero hooks but they all just decided to hide rather than someone try to take a hit so I don’t have to keep focus and be out of the game... I really don’t know what to say as the “team” of survivors just feels like an “everyone-for-themselves” game with no one working together, I don’t even bother to take items into games anymore as I’m chucking them away before the game even starts.

When friends are on, join them! When they are not, play killer. Its good to be practiced in both roles, as the game plays different for both, and you get to see how each plays.

My friends only play a couple of times a week so maybe you are right and I should give Killer a try.

If you like the role, awesome, personally its my favorite. If not, you at least get different perspectives of the game, which will only make you a better survivor. Its a win-win.

Lmao a lot of this is good
Apart from dont play Trapper or Wraith
They are weaker but still great and fun, I'm a wraith main myself

Wraith is one of the best to learn the basic as killer though I would t plan on using him as your main.
Dwight is probably the best starter survivor. You just stick with other players and you get things done more efficiently (and learn more)

So killer, wow that was an interesting insight, everything feels different as a killer, but I don’t know if it’s a better or worse experience.
I’ve had 3 games so far, I’ll be honest game 1 was horrendous, it was obvious I didn’t know what I was doing and the Survivors punished me for it, only managing 3 hooks with everyone escaping. Game 2 was slightly better, I gave my first two gens up to focus on trapping the others (and their loops), I forced the Survivors to play near shack and trapping that and taking them down their really made my game easy, I managed to kill 3 but the 4th got the hatch. Game 3 was a disaster, some how I got matched with players far far far lower ranked than myself (all between 9-13), they all had flashlights and effectively it was a 30-40 minute teabag fest with what I could only describe as my worst time in a video game ever, effectively they held me hostage and I’m supposed to be the killer...
