If there is not enough killers but a lot of survivors

Why killers don't get oponents close to their rank? I mean if there are a lot of survivors with different ranks why does this happen?

I am not exactly sure how does matchmaking works so I am asking.

Not everyone is available at the same time and matchmaking was changed to more prioritize finding matches, instead of equal skill levels. You get low ranked killers cuz the red ranked survivors were waiting a little too long. Then you get red ranked killers cuz the red ranked survivors were given to the low ranked killer. Rainbow ranks happen cuz whatever is left over is thrown into the mix or it tries to create a fair match. Then SWF makes things even more confusing.

    It's the wait time.

If a lot of mid rank survivors wait 10 minutes for a lobby then they will get the next killer regardless of rank. That's why you see rank 17 killers going against purples and reds.

If wait times were closer on both sides the ranks would be closer together. (In theory)

Hmmm ok. That crossed my mind too but I was not really sure how it works. Thanks.

They really need to make playing killer more appealing.

Nobody knows how matchmaking works. Not even BHVR from what I can tell.

Ironically they have made the killer experience a lot better from how it used to be.

But instead of increase the killer population it actually decreased it. Some 3 years ago killer queues were super long because there were too many killers and not enough survivors. This was an era when we still had infinites like the Ironworks infinite, we had uber balanced landing which made every building on Haddonfield an infinite, we had old Decisive Strike, we had 99% Sabo, we had Toolboxes that actually did stuff, Leader wasn't nerfed into the ground, maps were signifiicantly darker and clothes were also darker, it was legit hard to see survivors, Endgame Collapse didn't exist, etc.

Playing as killer during this era was hellish but we still had more killers than survivors.

Because the game was new and survivors didn't know what they were doing so killers were still getting wins. people started to figure out the infinites and started doing things like holding twitch streamers hostage for literally hours leading to the "removal" of infinites and turning them into 3 gen time wasters instead.... so essentially still infinites relative to the length of the game.

They reworked the time wastes but survivors have now become proficient at looping all while the graphical updates add holes and survivor only gaps that they can see through to remove mind games. They are adding breakable walls to justify terrible map design (still bad with the walls like asylum and chapel) while also wasting more of the killers non existent time.

Then we have the problem that has been there from the start. gens are to fast compared to the killers objective as proven by the depip squad.

Couple of factors here, though I don't know if this holds true for consoles. Up until we got crossplay on PC, killer queues were very long and survivor was instant. Ever since crossplay survivor queues have been unbearably long later in the day and killer is instant. I'd be willing to bet all platforms that aren't PC have the reverse disparity where there's a lot more survivors than killers.

The other being that the playerbase is just getting better over time. I feel like killer is immensely less fun to play if you get a bunch of good players running good perks.

That wasn't true at least where I played. Just before crossplay I think it was like 30 seconds-2 minute killer queues and 2-5 minute survivor queues. Of course if you increase it to the whole year you'll see Killer queues were like 1-5 minutes. Survivor queues were 4-10 minutes. It generally depended on if there was a new killer release cuz everyone would try the new killer but generally, killer queues were shorter.

Matchmaking and Queue times have a lot to do with it. So you can be a rank 17 or 16 killer and get put in a game with rank 12, 10, or 8 Survivors because that group had been waiting for a while. The game itself does have a learning curve that I would classify as steep. Playing as a Survivor has the advantage have been able to play with friends that can teach you as you go, which killers don't have(let's not get any deeper into the SWF debate on here though). This makes it more frustrating to get started as a killer than survivor, which in turn creates a barrier to entry that I would describe as Mild to Moderate. So the pool of available killers is not growing as quickly as the pool of survivors. Take this all with grain of salt though as these are all inferences I have made from my personal play experience of about a year or so, and I have no statistical data to back this up.
