I'm gay and donated blood in high school. They didn't even ask my sexuality. Is that only for adults?
0 -
They always asked my boyfriend's orientation, among other bits of personal information, it was in a form he had to fill out. I haven't donated blood yet (I hate getting blood drawn and now is not really the best time to go to the hospital), but I would have to fill out a form just like he did. Note that this varies from country to country, naturally. In the case of the USA, I'm guessing it even varies from state to state.
3 -
It may be dependent on country or something? Pretty sure in my country you have to fill out a form and they explicitly ask if you belong to the group „Men that have sex with men“. Among other questions as being a prostitute or having unprotected sex or many different sex partners.

Yeah, Alt rights call it 21TH century, or just civlized people
1 -
1-Basically, u're complain about the community act like they're universally speaking by speaking by urself a LGBT character wouldn't work because it's desnecessary even literally all others lgbt people thinking otherwise?
Seems ironical
2-I don't think u know what homophobia is at all, cause that's literal homophobia in a dictionary
2 -
Just for the record, I never called you a homophobe and just said it seems like you have a problem with LGBTQ+ because of your previous title and the fact that heterosexuality didn’t seem to bother you.
3 -
If u want poepl do not sexualize ur game, don't assexual characters
We don't have a lgbt character and have a lot of DBD Rule 34. As I said, it's just the fac they're gays that seems to matters
2 -
As you said yourself, the sexualization is already happening. even for the guy with a confirmed heterosexual marriage.
That’s not a reason at all to exclude LGBT+, thanks for this point of view
1 -
I mean.. you do you I guess? No one is keeping you from speculating. Bill is licensed btw so maybe there is something in the L4D lore for you if you want to know something canon about him
2 -
Its not that it didn't bother me, its just that I didn't even notice it, because it had literally no effect on the game's overall feel or lore. That just proves my point- It doesn't make a huge difference, so there's no reason to make a big deal about it. I never specified who was accusing me. but if you read some of the comments outside of our debate you'll see a couple. One even implies that I'm a "Thinly Veiled Homophobe."
1 -
BLT. Sounds delicious
1 -
Yeah but that’s pretty much what most people want: treating LGBT+ like they treated heterosexual relationships before. We are not asking to make a big deal out of it. On contrary, many people pro inclusion don’t want that, but also we don’t want explicit exclusion just for exclusions sake.
2 -
And what gives the community the impression that they're being purposely excluded?
0 -
The Devs themselves said that.
3 -
The devs said so in the statement from June last year. It wasn’t intentional from their side, but it still happened.
1 -
bunger
0 -
How does not intentional translate to purposeful exclusion?
0 -
Never said purposeful.
but after they admitted it was unintentional exclusion, should they have turned to intentional exclusion?
4 -
Of course not. As for the Purposeful exclusion, I just assumed that's what you meant when you said the community felt they were being "explicitly excluded for exclusion's sake".
0 -
No I only meant that there are some people that are asking for exactly that. And demanding this is just wrong
2 -
I agree. We don't NEED to know as it doesn't matter.
2 -
Hmm..
I don't know If this will help, but I have a bad analogy for you. If you read this post that is. Obviously this is nothing like sexuality, but please see it from a whole rep standpoint? If I write it well enough..
I have a very obscure, or unused name. I've not really met people with my name, except from secondhand stories about where I got it from.
So, I can never find my name on the little name plaques and badge stands they have at the $2 store - if you know the ones I'm talking about? And while it may not impact me too much, and other people may not care, I would still get a feeling of joy if I finally saw one, I wouldn't forget it.
Everyone else says that it's not necessary, it's just a nametag, no one is called that anyway.. but their names are up there, they'd be able to find theirs if they looked, so they don't know the even just slight disappointment felt when my name can't be found.
Then one day, I browse a store and it has one of those stands. Even though I know it won't be there I spin it around looking at names - and there it Is! My name! It wasn't made specifically for me, but I now feel happy, because my name is no longer odd; I might not see it again for a while but seeing it brings me joy, because I've finally found what fits me, I can finally relate to having my name on one of those little plaques.
Does it affect much? No. Does anyone else care that it's there? No. But I will remember it as the place that finally had my name amongst all the other names there. It's an option for me.
If that makes sense.. it's half baked.. and I'm bad with words. I'm sorry it took so much up, but my point is.. - and obviously the two aren't comparable because identity is much much more than a birth name, but what I'm tryna say I guess?
Is some people don't notice, or don't think it's necessary to add it, but when they've been included all their life it's hard to relate to those who haven't.. an LGBTQIA+ character in dbd isn't going to affect the game gameplay wise, but it brings joy and a feeling of relation to some people who are. And i think making people feel included is a very important thing..
It's not like it's being made a big deal - as in, the characters sexual orientation and gender identity isn't changing anything - so just because you don't notice it and think it's necessary, doesn't mean others will too.
Sorry, this went longer than intended -_-"
4 -
Well, those people need to STFU too. I'm not against someone being LGBT in the game, I just don't see it as a huge deal. People who don't want it just because of hate can go get their leg caught in a trap.
1 -
You have written it very well and made a very good point!
it’s also a Good analogy because not every person with an outlandish name can relate because of whatever reason, but there are many that do care about finding their names on that stuff.
i guess for younger generations it’s not so easy to understand because of the globalization and internet and all you can personalize it already.. but I could very well relate to it
1 -
That’s my entire point of view. I never myself have directly asked for that representation nor do I really actually want or need it. I definitely wouldn’t mind it though and would probably love it if the execution was great, just how I like the newly revealed chapter.
i just don’t see why the devs should restrict themselves in their creativity or why exclusion should take place if there is no reason for it.
1 -
Ah thank you.. I just hope it wasn't too hard to read!
I don't know(I guess?) I would qualify as the younger generation.. I'm 18, but my name is.. an older name one could say.. I get about being able to find it on the internet, but there's just something about the idea of being able to find it without having to ask specifically, I guess.. I'm glad you could relate though!
1 -
Are you quoting the right people? Everything you just accused people of aren't in either quote you put in your reply. In fact neither are even talking about the same thing you are.
1 -
It almost seems like heterosexuality is the abnormal thing these days. Way too many people consider themselves LGBT just because that's what's popular. Its frustrating.
0 -
Or, y'know, they feel confident in coming out because there's more acceptance now than a few decades ago? But nah, must be "the trend". That's why I felt attracted to boys and girls all the way back when I was a kid, before the Internet was even a thing in my country.

With everything going on in the world right now, I would avoid adding LGBTQ characters to this game. It's not that I don't want an LGBTQ character, you do you that's fine but I know that the other more "caring" LGBTQ people the ones that just look at things for what it is without putting much thought into it will see this game as offensive. I believe there will be too many problems that will occur when adding an LGBTQ character to this game and any other game depending on the style of the game.
I also know that there are some kids that play this game and I STRONGLY believe that they do not need to know about this kind of stuff at a young age from a game. so again, I only see more problems than solutions coming from this.

So you explain the context to them and ignore the unreasonable ones who won't listen. Problem solved.

As someone who didn't know bisexuality was a thing until his late teens despite having felt attracted toward boys and girls since he was a child, this is BS. Furthermore, if kids are playing the game, I'd be far more worried about their exposure to the violence and toxic people than a line of lore they will never read. I'd also be worried about them for their parents.

"the trend" is right, its been trendy and profitable to be part of THAT community for awhile now look at main stream television and social media. It succeeds the last community of people that was trendy and profitable.
1 -
That's not a thing.
But to answer the question of why people want an LGBT character, it starts with an innocent, earnest, natural desire to see yourself represented in the media you consume and feel like you are acknowledged as being part of the community. Like, "I want to see myself in the game; it would be cool if there were a character like me."
And then you say that out loud, and a bunch of angry boys tell you to STFU and stop trying to ruin their game for them, because their perfect world is a world where people like you don't exist, and they'll set their PS4s on fire if even a single byte of the game is designed for you and not them.
And then you're like, "Now I want one so I don't have to feel like you've won."
4 -
Yes, boys start dating boys and girls start dating girls (with all that that implies) because of "the trend". Never mind the fact that if they were heterosexual, that would turn them off massively. No, it must be "the trend". There's no other potential explanation for why people without a visible minority status would start to come out more often the more their acceptance grows.
3 -
Do you think they're going to listen to you explain it? Good luck with that, they don't listen to much of anything without being offended anyway. Also, violence and toxic people are in almost every game, it's actually worse in Rust which is the big thing on YouTube now so kids are more into that so no I am not worried about that since kids also did the same thing in Fortnite as well, that will not change it has been going on for years and it's up to the parents to control that the same way it is up to the parents to tell them about LGBTQ at an older age, not a game plus we all know that content creators will talk about the LGBTQ so even if they don't read the "lore" they will still find out in some way.
0 -
Maybe the better way to view this would be that both heterosexual and LGBTQ+ people are normal people? And treat them equally instead of trying to find ways how they are distinctive to one another?
why do we need to label some abnormal (which is implying something negative here, even if you didn’t mean to)?
2 -
Do you think they're going to listen to you explain it? Good luck with that, they don't listen to much of anything without being offended anyway.
That's why I said you ignore the unreasonable ones. You need to read past the first sentence.

So go worry about violence and toxic people, which are actually harmful, instead of worrying about the kids who are going to read all the lore in the game with a fine-toothed comb (yes, all 0 of those kids).
2 -
Most of them are unreasonable, so as I have said before... good luck because there will probably only be a small handful that will actually listen to what people say. I also added to that next statement you quoted. "plus we all know that content creators will talk about the LGBTQ so even if they don't read the "lore" they will still find out in some way." is what I edited in afterwards
0 -
Kids can handle this just fine. No one is asking for graphical sexuality here, just treating LGBTQ+ the same way heterosexuality is already treated.
actually I think it’s way more problematic if children don’t get to know about LGBTQ+, because this is making them believe it would be something abnormal, which it just isn’t.
also the violence part is definitely something that might cause problems for some children, even though you don’t see any immediate effects.
2 -
I dunno, Mooks seems reasonable. He wants to treat LGBT lore the same as non-LGBT lore. What's unreasonable about that?
As for kids, what's wrong with them hearing about normal people? I'd say the exposure to psychopaths and people with violent tendencies (who aren't normal) is more worrisome.
3 -
So I am assuming that you think kids can make decisions for themselves then? It is actually more problematic and we are already seeing it. Violence in video games is not a problem for normal kids, only those that have already had problems in their childhood, and this is proven.
0 -
So go complain to the parents, not DbD. This is a game for adults. If the parents are letting their kids play it, that's on them.
PS: Seeing or hearing about LGBT people won't turn your kid LGBT or cause any issues. That's not how it works.
3 -
Kids are easily influenced, that's like their thing.
Post edited by Rizzo on0 -
Yes, I was definitely influenced by all the zero LGBT people in my life when I was a kid. That's why I turned out bisexual.
You can't "influence" someone to change sexual orientation.
2 -
Yea so you see the problem here then? The game is rated M for mature but parents still let their kids play BUT the parents won't put that blame on themselves, they'll point it at the game and the devs, and then the media will jump on it like they always do. This has also been going on for years to other games.
Yes I know that's not how it works, calm down I am only saying that showing underdeveloped kids that kind of stuff can turn them in a direction they might not want to go. Not so much for Lesbian or Gay but the more extreme stuff and I use the word "extreme" only because you can change/alter your appearance and won't be able to reverse it. It is not intended to be offensive.
I should also mention that by "kid" I mean anyone younger than 15. Maybe 16
0 -
I haven’t said that at all. This game is for adults and children should not play it. There are parents involved after all.
i am saying however that children can easily handle the existence of LGBTQ+. Many children at growing up with people that are LGBTQ+ in their close environment and don’t evolve any problems out of that. And yeah that is proven as well, even for children with parents who are LGBTQ+.
i don’t know why you would say it would be problematic??
1 -
Then maybe it's time for someone to stand up to those unreasonable people. Why should we kowtow to cancel culture? Let's add explicitly LGBT relationships and when someone wants to cancel the game because their kids play it, we say "no".
2 -
Because the data shows it as being problematic if you're not making the right choices.

Yes, general discrimination leads people to feel like ######### and want to kill themselves. That's why we need acceptance.
3 -
Good luck, you're also going to have to deal with the people that think games are the reason their kid is violent.
