About the release of a Map Editor

Happy after a compelling match against a capable and stubborn Nurse at Gas Heaven, I suddenly came up with a revolutionary idea to relaunch the game in an absolutely creative way. I do not need you to list the titles to which passionate players have made an incalculable enrichment through the development of mods, duly authorized and legitimately downloadable from Steam, with the tacit consent of the developers.

Well, in this case I think it is not appropriate to leave the field free to the mods, which would create predictable version conflicts between players, being DbD an essentially online game, but the prized @not_Queen @Patricia @Peanits @Suggestive and other managers could patronize the idea of releasing a patch that introduces the following news:
1) a map editor, complete with all objects and structures used in all official maps released so far;
2) a personal archive, in which each user can create, modify and store his own personalized maps, developed according to his taste;
3) a system of sharing maps between players, which can only be used in private games (KYF);
4) a management archive, accessible only to developers, in which all personal maps used in at least fifty KYF trials (and therefore reasonably complete and perhaps even definitive) can be viewed;
5) a messaging system that allows developers, in their unquestionable judgment, to privately contact the creators of the best maps to suggest corrections, initiate balancing tests or congratulate them.

If implementing such a reform on the console would be too difficult, they could reserve it, always or only in the early days, to Steam customers, also because a computer is definitely more convenient to draw from scratch a new map.

Furthermore, they may periodically hold a special event, a kind of competition among the most original maps, the best structured, tactically compelling, wisely balanced ones: the winning maps will be released as patches and made available to everyone in public matches, with the credits of the creators.

What are the benefits?
A) The developers would get rid of a large amount of work, being able to devote more and better to the development of new characters and game mechanics;
B) the most savvy players, lovers of Dead by Daylight, would be able to demonstrate their mastery in the development of new settings, enticed by the fame they would gain in the whole community;
C) all players would learn how difficult it is to build an aesthetically beautiful map, effectively competitive but fair on both sides, and perhaps they would stop systematically complaining about an unbalanced game, beginning to admire its graceful complexity;
D) the game would gain a virtually infinite longevity;
E) of course, this would attract more new players, resulting in more money for the authors of this adorable title.

People of the Fog, sign this petition! Let's make Dead by Daylight something timeless and magnificent! :D

    What you're suggesting is essentially Steam Workshop support which I'd be 100% supportive for. I'd even try to contribute myself as personally I have plenty of experience with various tools.

    Realistically though I don't see it happening as much as I want Workshop Support, Dedicated servers and mods for DBD. I love to be proven wrong though so yeah I support the idea.

    I suggested steam workshop support in the Q and A threat of patricia. Go ahead and vote my question up to get it into the next live stream :)

    I think the last time this was brought up in a stream, they said something along these lines:

    Muh, not possible because maps are "proceduraly" generated by putting tiles together, muh.

    But still, the idea sounds interesting.

    Not necessarily a problem though that they're procedurally generated - which in my opinion I wouldn't say they are - they're randomised definitely but procedurally generated I would'nt say so. Because as far as I know, they're using predetermined tiles with predetermined and variable object placement.

    I think opening up to the workshop would be both a good thing but also bad thing as it might open up to all sorts of issues, like cheating and other sorts of hacks, without them being actual hacks to gain competitive advantages. The real question is, does the pros outweigh the cons?

    Its simply not possible t he way they built their game and would probably require even more rework than dedicaed servers would need

    @Dustin @Pizzaman @Incarnate Mods could create a lot of issues, but maps have fixed structures with random chests, gates, gens, hatch, pallets and tiles placement, chosen among some predetermined places: it would not be too difficult to build a good map, with a good map editor, a creative spark and computer knowledges. :)

    @Master My hope is bigger than yours, then.

    if they allowed this people with brains would start making well designed maps and make the devs look stupid so it won't happen

    @DukeJukem Devs are not as stupid as you think: Dead by Daylight is a wonderful game! The Community should support them in improving it. :)

    @Peanits Provided you agree with it, could you kindly send my detailed map editor proposal to the Developers? :)

    A NASCAR racetrack. You know... a big circle. Since running in circles is the most favorite thing for high rank survivors, i would dedicate a map to them.
    I also imagine a Billy endlessly rushing through the racetrack. No obstackles, just pure speed.

    @Tsulan I'd like to see a kind of vertical map, with several floors and mazes.

    now I want this nascar map purely to see billy boi running around the track(like nascar,, nascar).

    It'd be a lot of effort for, imo, not super impressive payoff. I'd rather see that energy go into overall game health rather than custom maps. I like the idea of expanding the KYF mode but right now I feel there's more pressing issues that need to be addressed.

    A map in dbd is just a combination of static tiles and randomized tiles.

    • In a map editor there can definitely be a submenu to create the pool of random tiles.
    • The static tiles would be buildings or other bigger structures (that tree, cowtree, killer shack, the asylum etc.
    • Markers to designate locations for chests, pallets, hooks etc.
    • Obviously one should be able to choose the realm or "wall design, lighting color and weather"
    • Exporting your own map to the Workshop does sound important.

    But i think that the devs would need to approve of maps getting added to the game. Or even adjust them. (Well Kyf is another thing)

    The idea is great. Too bad the game's base code is literal spaghetti and I guarantee it'd lead to an assload of exploits. Unlucky!

  • Entità
    Entità Member Posts: 1,583

    @Raptorrotas Yes, it would be reasonably easy for good users to create some maps.

    Custom map building sounds like a lot of fun! I wouldn't mind the idea of crafting traps and obstacles that the entity would send at the survivors. Of course this would probably take a great deal of planning and would be put on hold while other things get worked on. But it's always nice to imagine some of the amazing things that could occur in dead by daylight.

    You said always reserve it to PC if necessary, but if this has to be done then it won't happen. The devs don't want to exclude people from anymore content. That includes skins, DLC's and even a map creator

    I want a map that is a stuck elevator, with jammed doors. Killer would spawn in the middle, Survivors near the sides, at least 0.5 m from the killer, for fairness.

  • Entità
    Entità Member Posts: 1,583

    @Crazewtboy I think they can release the Map Editor for all platforms.

    @George_Soros Make it and enjoy with your friends. XD

    I like the idea but could only work for KYF, the amount of time the devs would have to spend to check if the map is suitable for public use would be way too much.

  • Entità
    Entità Member Posts: 1,583

    @martin27 I think developing and checking is much more demanding than simply checking a new map.

  • martin27
    martin27 Member Posts: 700

    And they would have to give thorough checks to multiple maps, the majority of them being completely unbalanced on top of their current work load.

    A map editor for maps that can only be used in custom games/events might be interesting. Just bear in mind all the "get stuck" points that happen even on maps that the game designers work on tirelessly. I expect we, not being as versed, would create TONS of these.

  • A map editor and custom maps for custom games only. Also, killers could play the custom match with out survivors.

    Sounds cool, thought tons of problems with collision would likely emerge.

    I have so many things I want to change on DbD's maps :,(.

    I've wanted this so badly for so long.

  • I'd absolutely love this as well!

    While I think workshop would be nice for Assets, I think the dev's would need to release an official tool/editor for Maps.

    Select grid shape, place tiles (Hill, Jungle gym, filler, Main building, shack etc) on grid, maybe have SOME freedom whats exactly in the tiles.

    Well thats the gist for "fair maps" in an enviroment open for everyone. For KYF, all kinds of maps could work.

    Would perhaps need a Server list for custom games in the main game.

    My personal opinion would be to use the workshop like TF2 does, look at that fancy stuff people come up with, and then officially implement it.
