I mean, who doesn't play this game to not win? I don't think I've come across those sort of players yet. 🤔

Sometimes I play for the banter, but at the same time if I win great... if not, its been fun regardless of winning or losing.

This all kind of leads to a seperate issue where the game is pitched as "define your own wins" which only further divides players. How the game rewards you makes it clear that pips are wins (you get more rewards for accomplishing more objectives) but despite the game design devs are reluctant to give a clear message. This is all to accommodate more casual play and to "not rock the boat".

I mean, I would fault the devs for balancing choices than the people who want these balancing choices.

Like, who are you going to listen to for balancing the game? A very competitive person or a very casual person? The competitive person.

On the other hand who are you going to listen to for QOL changes that make the game fun? The casual person.

Both opinions are just as important to consider.

Whoever controls balancing sometimes listens to the wrong people, and I think the twins change perfectly shows that, also, I think the fact that NOTHING has happened to spirit is another case of that.

No most of the base is casual. it's quite the opposite in my opinion. The Sweats who take this game, or any other video game for that matter way to seriously. I would understand if people were making money, like tournaments. But 99.99% of us are not in tournaments.

Casual players are the lifeblood of this game. If it were balanced around the upper echelon it would be miserable.

    No.

Well, sort of. But we're not the only ones to blame.

Obviously not. Casual players are the reason why this game is alive, since it is a casual game. If casual gamers would not be a thing, at least 95% of the playerbase (if not more) would have a miserable experience and only the Top 1% or something like that would have a challenging and fun game.

There should be fun and it shouldn't be tournament balanced either but it does often feel like there are a lot of choices made only due to the vocal majority regardless of the impact on the quality of the game for both sides. Killer (which is the least casual populous side) just isn't all that fun nowadays regardless of how strong it is. I'm fine with losing but even winning as killer isn't fun oftentimes because it becomes grueling to deal with various annoyances. I just want both sides to be about equally fun but for me 1. Killer is often a miserable experience because of various issues and 2. Survivor is kinda boring due to how easy it feels due to being more casual designed. It's hard to keep this kind of game going very effectively if one side isn't all that fun

How dare people play a game they bought for fun, how dare they.

Not ruining, but tampering with balance. Things keep getting easier as survivor due to what I assume is a refusal to adjust with different strategies dependant on which killer they face.

Killers get balanced for the worst of Survivors. Survivors get balanced for the top % of killers.

No, in fact I would say the continued growth and survival of DBD relies on new players being able to jump in and have fun.

DBD tends to be a game filled with hidden mechanics and long term experience. I've played with several casual friends who still don't understand how BBQ works or, how important it is to be ready for the "reveal" perks.

Most new players probably come in survivor side as friends introduce them to the game.

To some people the games draw is really about horror atmosphere and its not a first person shooter.

I actually support efforts to make the game more friendly and transparent when it comes to builds. The options, perks, addons, changes just keeps growing and new players get dropped into a sea of mechanics playing out around them, they are often oblivious to.

Actually I believe the esports serious people are ruining DBD, this is more similar to Mario Party than to Starcraft/Dota and cant be balanced at all unless you put a chatbox for Solo queue to write and comunicate with the rest of the team.

No, they're the majority of the playerbase of just about any game that can be called "kinda popular". As in the people that are too casual to bother to ever sign up for an account on here.

And casual doesn't mean bad either. You can be that kinda casual "hop on after school/work for an hour or two and have some fun games" player with hundreds if not thousands of hours and in high ranks. Casual is a mindset, not necessarily a skill level.

No player is ruining the game. It's the dev team, bhvr corporate higher ups, and their investors. Anyone who thinks it's a problem with any section of the playerbase is crazy.

The majority of the playerbase is casual. Some are more skilled than others, some are more fun to play with than others, some make more mistakes than others. I've played for a couple of hours at night, mostly at weekends for over 3 years, certainly not a noob but im not a sweat, competitive, meme player either.

I love the uncertainty of what teams I play with and against.

Do casual players ruin the game?

I've been debating this in my head since the release of World of Warcraft and I can't find a satisfactory answer for myself.

The thing is, my first games were on a Magnovox Oddessy back in the 70's. I was an early adopter. Getting my dads quarters ate up at arcades and so forth. I was the wierd kid at school that was actually good at these things that were balanced to hard difficulty as that was the only difficulty devs were familiar with. I'm used to the challenge.

I'm not mad games have been made more accessible to a wider audience. If anything, I welcome having more people I can enjoy my hobby with. I'm not mad that in some games there may be a "kid brother" mode or what not to let the lesser skilled play with you. I don't look down on somebody who likes a puzzle game or a farming simulator. I enjoy the fact the genre has something for everybody.

What I take exception to is the attitude that these so-called casuals expect the rest of us to play down to their level. I really get annoyed when a game company, as part of their vision, produce a "Dark Souls" or similarly brutal game that beating actually means effort; and these people demand it get made easier for them. It really ######### annoys me because I'm sitting here saying "Yes, keep making easy games for my lesser skilled friends to play!" but my wish to have a few challenges tailored to my taste that people like me can enjoy in our corner of the world is somehow "elitist" or "ablist"... complete BS.

And it's really ######### annoying when we get demonized in a PvP game for playing wide open. I mean... seriously, #########? I get that you want a specific difficulty - I'm the same way. I get bored AF when I get a baby team that is clearly outmatched, so I want out ASAP and take the steps necessary to end that game and move on. I try to make their demise swift so that it's over with and they can get busted down to a killer more their skill-level... but somehow I'm the bad guy? Really?

It's times like this... when latecomers come to my hobby demanding I put on the kid gloves or that the difficult games I enjoy get neutered I start wishing I was still just some social outcast that nobody understood the passion for games I have. Because at least then, I wasn't vilified for playing hard against my peers.

Deep down, what I want from my fellow player is the understanding that not every game is for them - not every experience will be for them. What I want from the casuals is a bit of self-awareness and understanding. I want them to know themselves well enough to realize that they don't have to play a game they don't enjoy. I want them to realize it's futile to rage at the people who beat you because most of us aren't going to stop beating you. It's futile to expect random people you know to play in a manner you desire. Rather than frustrating yourself over something you have no control over, take command of that you DO have control over.... yourself. Make that decision to either tighten your gut and tough through the rough parts in a game you love enough to do it for, or make the decision to take a break or move on.. There is nothing wrong with either of these decisions and I support you either way.

Remember, I may be part of the old-school when it comes to gaming, but I really do like seeing more people in the hobby as it gives us the choice we have today. I may not be a fan of the Sims games and I find sports games boring - but I still consider you my gaming cousin no matter which platform you choose. Just please be as accepting of me as I am doing my best to be of you - even if we don't agree on gaming philosophies.

Yes and no, casual players are the life of every game but they should not balance around them. You should balance around the top first then make sure it also works for casuals because a killer might be balanced against 4 god survivors but completely destroys solo casuals or a perk might be fair at higher levels of play but rediculous at low levels.

There's a difference between casual and not playing to win. If by not playing to win you mean people trying to have fun and getting stomped by Ultra sweaty try hard on either end so they give up, those aren't people not playing to win they just aren't sweaty #########.

The people ruining the game for me are not the casual players who make mistakes (which I do too, constantly) but the toxic ones who go out of their way to ruin the game for others.

Had one earlier versus the Doctor where I was on a generator with a Yun who made it explode, I hopped in the nearest locker and she waited for the doctor to show up then repeatedly pointed at the locker. Later, she then deliberately led him to where I'd crawled after being slugged. He knew what was up though and carried on chasing her until she was hooked, but then came back and hooked me...GG. No idea why this hateful person decided to just be a dick but I will pick a newbie over a troll every time.

    Let's see:

When casuals play against casuals everyone has a good time.

When casuals play against sweaters, only the sweater has a good time.

When sweaters play against sweaters no-one has a good time.

It's 100% the sweaty, competitive, toxic tryhards that are ruining dbd. I've always been told that dbd used to not be like this, therefore I don't think it was intended for what the player base has become.

You've been told wrong. This game has always had the competitive players in it. See also true infinites and survivors who ran them, actual honest-to-god facecamping that blocked the unhook prompt, and the origin of the slugging meta.

See also, how the game was when the moon offerings were in effect when combined with fog offerings.

See also, that most high rank killers ran the old Billy before Nurse was live because he was the only one who had map pressure.

If that isn't evidence that people were playing to win by all means necessary - your definition is flawed.

This game was not built from the ground up for competitive esports play. Only recently has BHVR started pushing this super sweaty competitive style. This game is just a casual cat and mouse game. Majority of people, even veterans and streamers, don’t like the sweaty tryhard players. It’s not fun and just makes people panic and miserable. I don’t think casual players are ruining it per say, though some nerfs and buffs to certain perks and such are very strange and clearly made to make a certain player’s time easier for some reason. Like Lucky Break and the odd nerf to Twins etc. I think casual players are a small problem but only to the nerfs and buffs. I enjoy casual matches instead of the sweaty toxic SWF squads I constantly get after 8 at night.

Well casual players can't win. The game is too hard for someone just to pick it up and have fun and expect to do well. All the changes are designed to make it harder and in my opinion less fun.

No? People playing a game doesn't ruin the game, the devs that choose to balance the game around them does, and even then it doesn't RUIN the game, it just makes the game worse.

  • Brokenbones
    Brokenbones Member Posts: 5,169

I also agree that this is a really silly and divisive question because it implies non-casual players are somehow... Better for the game? When they certainly aren't. Like why would you ask this question?

If anything sometimes comp dbd brings out the worst in people.

I strongly dislike the whole comp scene in dbd but it has a right to exist of course.
