Why do people hang out in or near open exit gates when the odds are stacked against them?
I have rarely seen things go so bad for one survivor who decided to hang out not only at the exit gate but a little ways outside it with what with the match I was in.
We knew the killer was camping the when someone was hooked. We knew the killer had NOED. And the exit timer was around halfway depleted. Yet this survivor decided to venture out needlessly and got downed in one hit and hooked and the killer was camping as expected.
Their were two of us remaining not including the one that just got hooked. I had just arrived at the exit gate and the other survivor was just waiting inside the gate and exited just as I got there. I wasn't going to attempt to rescue the survivor with the killer camping and the totem still up and didn't have enough time to go search for it first so I left.
So why would a survivor make such an bad decision and not exit the gate considering the circumstances?

They're probably either 1. new to the game or 2. trying to be toxic and bm the killer

I should have checked the rank of the survivor I didn't think of that. Not the worse outcome I have seen from survivors hanging out in the exit gates but it is in the top 10.

If we knew why, many lives would be saved.

I'll stick around only if I think there's a possibility that I may be able to help a teammate who's still out in the wild. And I never teabag, ever. Even if the killer is an ######### I don't think I've ever done that. It's just not my instinct to do so, you need to be younger to want to do something like that.
A really funny thing happened though: A couple days ago I was on a team who went against the Twins in the hospital. It was weird, while I was out doing gennys I saw their auras and at one point when Victor was released they all quickly surrounded him and were either bowing to, teabagging, or somehow trapping him (a combination of all of the above). The three were in a tight circle around him and just bouncing up and down. It was really weird. By the end of the match though we won, and after I left first I spectated to see what the others were doing. They all made it to the gate and were right there by the exit line. The Twins were there at the start of the gate and kept releasing Victor who kept bouncing off of things. Every now and then a player would get hit and the others would heal him or her. This went on for a good minute as the endgame collapse took place, with the killer player just tossing Victor knowing that she couldn't win, and the survivors just stalling to goof around I guess. But then at the very last second, when the survivors turned to leave, one of them was apparently just BARELY too far outside the exit line and died. XD XD XD

General reasons to wait at the exit gates:
1-Inexperienced survivor.
2-Wants to BM the killer by teabagging.
3-Get protection hit and possibly WBLF stacks.
4-Sometimes when the killer had a bad game I usually hang around the exit gates to give him some hits and help with the malicious emblem.
