A question about the game's past and present
Greetings survivors, killers, and both-siders of the Fog! I hope this thread finds you doing well.
So, a recent thread created by @TGB made me think about DBD's past and present. Some people in the thread have pointed out issues DBD has / used to have, and they are right. For example, infinite loops and Old DS in the past and today's whole new level of gen rush and "hold W" meta.
However, one thing which was overlooked (and often is overlooked) is the fact that DBD had its advantages in the past, because most people like to talk about how the problems with balance were solved but they never talk about the good things we had, such as: Old Freddy, Old Billy, a better ambience, better events, Splinters, and the list goes on.
In conclusion, what I am trying to say here is that DBD had its problems in the past, but it also had extremely good things which current DBD does not possess. And now we can go to the question I would like to ask y'all. And it doesn't matter if you are a 2016 pioneer, a 2017 veteran, a 2018 absolute true gamer (like me), a 2019 champion, a 2020 Fog Warrior, or a 2021 shiny newcomer. It doesn't matter, as everyone can answer this question.
And the question is:
If you could return to an older version of Dead by Daylight, would you? Why, or why not? And if your answer is yes, what version would you like to return to?
Personally, my answer is yes. If I could, I would like to return to version 2.4.0 because that is when I first started playing and I genuinely think that the game was in a better state back then, especially regarding player experience. And, if you don't know what version I am talking about, allow me to refresh your memory:
And that is it! I am looking forward to reading your answers, and as always: see you in the Fog!
-Signed by GeneralV, your local Old Freddy main.

if i could return to any point in time in terms of dbd's history, i think i'd honestly go back to plague's release- demise of the faithful.
it came with a good killer, good killer perks, my favourite survivor perk in the game, and made ds the weakest it's ever been (including current ds). the game wasn't that buggy, midwich didn't exist, and we also didn't have ghostface.
a close- and i mean very close second is patch 2.2.1. it was before spirit and legion, we didnt have to worry about yamaoka estate, the game just felt nice to play. and no spirit.
7 -
There were some hilarious bugs in the past. Balance wise i would never return, this game is going upwards overall.
I'd like to return to the christmas bug, where myers mask was floating around without a body. Nurses held chainsaws and went invisible during the sprint. Everyone borrowed billys chainsaw and did ridiculous stuff, even survivors. We had killers using bond and survivors 4 sprint bursts in a row. That was a crazy time.
The other thing i would love to play again, is old billy. Flickbilly. Spacebilly. Arrowkeybilly. Shooting into space from the harvester and other ramps. Then flicking onto survivors at the end of the sprint like oni. That was peak fun in all of dbd for me till this day

Oh, you are right, my friend, Plague's release was also a good time to play DBD. Perhaps I would've chosen this one, but my nolstagia for the Winter Solstice is way too strong.
1 -
Not really, not now that Wraith's really awesome.
4 -
Wraith main, right? Well, I can understand that. My decision goes beyond my main, but if we still had Old Freddy I would likely reconsider.
0 -
If i'd consider what's overall the best, i might reconsider.
But my choice there was completely personal.
1 -
I just want static fall stagger reduction it doesn't have to no stagger like beta or even 75% like balanced landing after it's buff that was later reverted. It just feels so bad and ugly to fall as a survivor in this game.
1 -
I would love to return to Patch 2.0.0 which was the Clown's release.
The long anticipated Kate Denson arrived, along with a killer that people thought the developers would never add and a bunch of cosmetics that were hot.
4 -
Not to mention the Patch which removed the pallet vacuum! Now that is a fine choice :)
2 -
As it should be, my friend.
For example, the version I would like to return to has Old Legion, and I sure you remember how that... thing was. It is far from being the overall best version of DBD. But nolstagia, my friend... Ah, nostalgia is way too strong.
Of course I have some other options, but 2.4.0 is special to me.

So, you would like to go back to the past in order to see bugs? That is a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. What version exactly would that be?
0 -
Some bugs were pretty funny and there were so many of them, that you couldn't tell whats a bug and whats dbd. I had the scariest moment during buggy games, where you loaded in as a survivor into a completely dark world. No lighting, you could barely see anything and then you see the red light from the killer coming closer. You dont know where you are, you couldnt see pallets or windows, you could just run in the dark while a red light was coming closer. From the killers POV, there were survivors joining your ongoing match. A 5th, 6th, 7th survivor would load in, sometimes you find them and kill them, but the game would always crash.
In retrospect those bugs were funny, when you forget about the wasted time. When you got stuck in the hill...again.
But my favorite version was 1.0.4 when they removed some infinites. That was the first time survivors played with pallets and other windows. Seeing how palletlooping slowly developed and spread through the small playerbase until it became common knowledge.
4 -
DBD hit its absolute peak in 2019, most balanced/fun time in its history imo. All downhill since then. I'd return to that version if I could.
3 -
Agreed. With the exception of Freddy's failure of a rework, 2019 DBD provided a good player experience.
Do you have any specific versions in mind or just 2019 in general?
1 -
So, 1.0.4 it is. Damn, this sounds really old, but I think I can imagine how things were back then.
And yes, I've seen some interesting bugs, such as a trial with 5 survivors and no killer.
0 -
I'd go back when curtain call was the latest chapter, Because after that we had 4 events that were ACTUAL events and not a cash-grab
And the look of the game back then, The maps were dark but you could actually see the survivors and killer and they were not just invisible like autohaven the game and macmillan now are really dark i cannot see anything while playing both killer and survivor
And the events god the blight one was beautiful same with all of them obviously but the blight one was the best, Hopefully they come back
They can bring the fog back in the game and make them a bit brighter and make the blue tint come back into macmillan and reduce the amount of pallets in the game too
The events can come back too If BHVR wasn't so greedy..
I can go on and say what i want the devs to do But i feel like this is too much lol
-Your local feng main (That isn't toxic :D)
1 -
A very good choice indeed, and I agree with what you've said, especially regarding maps.
You are also correct about events, but I believe Moonrise (early 2019) was also a very good one.
EDIT: A Feng main who isn't toxic? Now that is rare!

To be honest so much stuff has changed throughout DBD's life I can't pinpoint an exact patch I'd want to return to in terms of the games balance, besides for nostalgic reasons.
But I do kind of wish the game could be reverted back to pre-crossplatform. I always used to see the same faces... people who have been playing like me for years. I used to recognize people's steam usernames and have a silly chat before the game started.
But now I hardly ever see the same players and it's even rarer to see the older players I used to see a lot. I also used to play against streamers a lot before crossplatform - it was a lot of fun seeing their perspective of the game afterwards. Nowadays half the players I play with I can't even interact with in post or after game chat. No one is familiar. Makes me sad.
Edit: Also just to clarify I realize there is an option to disable crossplatform. But I imagine it would take a very long time to find a game and that hardly anyone else uses that option.
3 -
Oh, I see. Well, if you would like to return to pre-crossplatform there are countless options of versions and patches, but I understand your point.
Back when I started it was not unusual for me to run into some familiar faces from time to time. And funny fact: a few days ago I played against a killer who I met back in the day, and we recognised each other. It was a very fun experience.
1 -
Things I want back/to come into DBD:
How the old maps looked
Old events
Old billy
Old Freddy (He could teleport out of ANYTHING like gens pallets hooks etc.)
Spirit rework
Myers addon pass
Hag addon pass
Old sabo (I miss that tbh Sure it took a while but it was fun for me at least)
Legion addon pass (With a rework)
Key nerf (I know that's coming but we don't know when)
Haddofield rework
Bloodweb rework
NOED rework (Throw in the token system there)
Dead Hard nerf (Make it so you can only avoid basic attacks and not the special ones)
That's pretty much what I want in DBD If they do all of the stuff I mentioned Everyone would be happy :D
1 -
A very reasonable list, especially Old Freddy of course. I think I agree with pretty much everything, except 1 thing, which is the Bloodweb rework. It might be an unpopular opinion here, but I think the Bloodweb is fine as it is.
But other than that, great list.
0 -
The bloodweb currently is kind of grindy tbh It shouldn't need a FULL rework I have an idea which is: When you prestige a character the perk is ALWAYS available to all the survivors for example Let's say I have plague P1 Corrupt will be available to all of the killers and when you get her to P2 infectious is also available to all killers same with P3
1 -
Well... I guess I wouldn't mind such change.
0 -
I'm going to be the outlier here and say that I actually wouldn't go back! I started playing in late 2018 and was active up until a recent hiatus for about 7 months (unrelated to the game). I'm back now and I have honestly never had as much fun with the game as I am having now as a solo player.
Now I'm very rusty and I lose more matches than I win (though statistically that is usually the case for Survivors, especially in 2020 where for red ranks it was shockingly low to have any escapes) but I just feel like there is an uptick in balance to the game. Killers feel oppressive and challenging but not impossible to counter (save for a few, and again I'm rusty), Survivors feel disadvantaged without wits and cooperation, it honestly feels so differently from how it was right before I left.
Maybe this is just from personal optimism but I can't wait to see what the future for DbD holds and where we are in another few chapters! 😄I think that some features will be even further polished and that we could have some exciting new Killers/Survivors, maps, improvements, etc.
Thanks for the fun post, GeneralV!

I would go back to the bbq event, that is when the game was extremely fun for me, what update it was..... I'm not even sure tbh.
1 -
"I started playing in late 2018"
It is always nice to meet a fellow 2018 gamer!
And honestly, I am quite surprised. I am also a solo player, most of the time at least, and would do anything to go back to the past. But I suppose I understand your point here, especially when it comes to balance.
I have not forgotten the infinite loops and Old DS from back in the day, and how broken those things were. However, playing against such things again is a sacrifice I am more than willing to make. Still, it is good to meet someone who is enjoying the current state of the game.
Thanks for answering my question, Kate_Main_01, I appreciate it.
1 -
Scorching Summer BBQ, right? That would be Patch 2.1.1, if I am not mistaken.
An excellent choice, if I do say so myself. You get a good player experience in general and a nice event... it doesn't get much better than this.
1 -
Well, that is not old enough in my opinion, but I understand why you've chosen this version. Silent Hill was indeed a great chapter, and things were a little bit better than they currently are.
0 -
Yeah that event, everything was great in that event just like you mentioned, from good player experience, really nice players from both sides, good event, everything anyone could ask for.
But yeah, that is what I would revert dbd if I had the option.
Man, your picture the one in the thread made me very nostalgic, I want old dbd back even if it was more unbalanced.
1 -
Indeed! Sadly, I wasn't here for this event, as I've started playing during Winter Solstice, but I have seen plenty of videos about it!
I am sure you had a lot of fun at the time. If only it was possible to return, I would've loved to embark on a journey through the Scorching Summer BBQ with you.
P.S: That menu music tho, so damn good!

I would rather return to a previous state of player mentality. Killer used to be easier because survivors didn't hold W and genrush, even though they had far more resources to use. The game was balanced around removing those resources and, when you go agaisnt teams that are playing like in the old days, it actually is a contest of skill.
0 -
A different state of player mentality? That is complicated, although I do understand your point. Holding w was somewhat of a rare sight back in the day, and the gen rush was not as sinister as it currently is.
I know it is hard to answer that, but does any specific version comes to mind? 2018, perhaps?
0 -
Before the nerf that weakened the god windows. I think it was early 2020? That's when people gave up on trying to play well because they didn't have gigantic safety nets to fal back on.
1 -
I started right between Ghostface and Demo, so mid 2019 here, personally I woul never go back. The only real events I've had were 4th year anniversary, Halloween gens/hooks, and lunar new year gens/hooks but to me big events bring out the FOMO which is bad enough when the rift gets close to closing and I haven't finished it yet.
As far as balance goes most of the killers that have had "negative" changes have been ones I didn't enjoy playing in the first place so it doesn't effect me at all. There are some things that are currently frustrating but I think a big part of that is that the game is becoming more balanced so some(most) players are clinging to those powerful perks, builds, add-ons, etc. that are incredibly strong and cover their lack of ability in certain areas.
0 -
Ah yes, I know which Patch you are talking about. I remember being excited at the time because I wouldn't have to deal with THAT one window on Ironworks of Misery.
If only I knew...
0 -
Ah yes, the nerf that only really fixed one angle and completely forgot about the other. And then the wall came in to add salt to the wound.
1 -
That one. You see, I most certainly wouldn't mind having to deal with those god-tier windows again. If that is the price to get a better experience and my old main back than so be it.
1 -
I'm going to hold off splurging all of my thoughts into an essay because this topic gets me really excited. I'll definitely write an extensive post about this at some point.
But anyway, I've actually had the chance to return to an earlier version of dbd via a cracked download. I chose version 1.3.1 and hopped into a KYF with a buddy. Let me tell you; it was an entirely different game:
- Different bloodweb UI
- Different attack animations and unique camera movement for killers
- Spooky map ambience is actually a thing!
- Absolutely busted add-on and perk combos for both sides
- Michael's POV didn't have his knife in this weird position above his head when in Evil Tier 3 (IMPORTANT!)
- Old hook and pickup times
I could go on for hours comparing everything that has changed. But to finally answer your question I want to go back to the date that I first started playing dbd. Around 2017. Returning to ignorance as well, as if I had never played the game. It was so much more fun back then. Back when everyone was still learning how the game worked and was playing for the thrills and scares more than anything.
I'm going to stop now so I can begin writing my essay.
1 -
Ah, my friend. This topic gets me excited as well, and if you want to write your essay here I would be more than happy to read it.
As for your answer, I understand your point and I agree with it. From the spooky maps to the old hook and pickup times; all of them good things which current DBD does not have.
And I also would like to return to 2017, specifically for Freddy's release. That was when he was in his best state, and I would like nothing more than to see my favourite killer shine.
Glad to see that you've liked my post, and thank you for your answer :)
1 -
Yes, because I miss the old maps.
1 -
One of the things I would like back is the ability to switch between survivor and killer without having to back all they way out to the main menu.
you used to be able to do that. I understand that at that point the killer was the game but it honestly felt better then having to back out of a selection screen just to go right back into the same one just for the other side.
1 -
May I ask what's wrong with Ghostface?
0 -
I have really bad memories related to Ghostface to the point where playing against him is still really difficult for me. It's better than it was 6 months ago but it's really, really challenging and pretty damaging for my mental health.
1 -
I wish you would've been there, just by seeing how nice you are here I coule tell that you would've had a blast in that event.
But hey you were there during the winter event, that one was also a great event, I too miss the music.

The patch that was active in December 2016 when I joined (neverthless, I know the game since May 2016). Reasons:
1. The game was truly scary. No, not because I was new. Even now, when I look at old footage, I get chills. The fog must return to all of the maps.
2. No Dead Hard. Periodt.
3. Christmas bug (Equiping survivor perks as the killer and vice versa, stacking perks, changing powers)
4. A far less toxic community. A far less devided community. This game taught me a lesson, never make any asymmetrical game in my life. If I do it, each side will have its mains, that will hate the other. Really wish we were less separated and viewed things objectively.
1 -
I’d go back to around cursed legacy or stranger things. Both fun chapters and that was about the time I really got into the game.
Breakable walls weren’t a thing and the maps were fairly balanced.
There was always a new map to look forward too and the new perks were usually pretty decent.
1 -
Honestly I like the current version of the game the most.
The Coldwind Rework was nice, as I like it that not all maps are dark. Bright places can have a scary feeling too and Tompson House had so many details that I just love it. The changes to Demogorgon made him a viable killer, the last changes to Clown make him interesting and not a joke anymore. Wraith is now a thread and the current Rift has some neet rewards.
And while I would love a chance to play the old Hillbilly with his dumb add-ones and I dislike the Auto Heaven rework overall the current version of the game is fine. Of course it can improve, as always: Change perk XYZ, give us more events, change Meyers and so on. But overall, I like it.
Oh and the Trickster intro has a pretty good beat.
0 -
Here since release.
Even though I don't agree with certain changes, for me the best overall state of DbD is the current one. I wouldn't want to have this game reverted to any of the previous versions.
0 -
Same, my friend. Same.
1 -
Ah yes, I remember that. It made things a little bit easier, and I wouldn't mind having it back.
