Why was Legion’s power so poorly designed?

I’m wondering if they planned to have a different power originally, where they actually utilised the different members of the legion in the power, then scrapped it when it became too complicated.

Their power is literally just getting to run slightly faster and making survivors stand still mending. It’s not like they spent all their energy on making the best Survivor ever, since they came with Jeff. How did they approve a power that was as simple as running? Even a killer that doesn’t have much to their power, such as Clown would’ve required some work on how the bottle interacts with the environment. It’s honestly baffling how basic this killer is, and even more baffling that a surprising amount of people play them at red rank, since there’s not a single way to down someone outside of being basic basic M1 killer.

Terrible killer, and I doubt they’re ever going to change them again after how controversial they were at launch. We’re going to be stuck with 20 minute games every time we go against a legion for eternity.

    Not 100% why

Honestly I notice that with many video games this happens. Not saying anything bad about BHVR. Cause they've made some great games. And I love this game. But any game runs into this problem especially games like this. You create a game that has a simple concept and it has a very structured first build to it with certain characters. And than you come up with a new idea and want to implement it and bring in the new dlc. Well that new dlc becomes the most desired choice because people will start to realize that the newer stuff tends to work better. And than older characters get forgotten and new ones are prioritized. And when they go back to an old part of the game they decide if its work fixing or putting off. There could be lots of reasons why Legion was made the way it was. It's almost like the just wanted this fast character that was almost supposed to blend in with the other survivors and not be noticed at first. Which would've been a cool concept. But all in all Gotta put yourself in BHVR's shoes cause they got a lot on their plate. They have all these major tittle characters that they have to fit into this game for flavor and making their own unique characters is just as hard. I wouldn't be surprised but I'd hope that they take some time to rework some of the current characters instead of shelling out more toons.

There's two main theories as to why Legion was the way he was.

1: Legion's power was initially really cool involving all four characters in the match at the same time as his power, before getting toned down over and over into this pathetic state due to either the complicity of the character or that the game couldn't handle it without breaking completely (look what happened when they just tried two killers, game didn't work for months).

2: Legion came out during the same period of the release of the clothing shop and he was made to have four characters in his lore to sell more cosmetics and that's the only reason he was that way. This is the more negative theory and it paints the devs as greedy #########.

Either way they completely messed up the marketing as the Teaser hinted at a killer with DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) and the trailer painted him as a killer that could blend in as a survivor (which is something the community has begged for, while the devs revealed they would never do it), he ended up being neither which pissed everyone off.

He's always been bad, I honestly think their power was an oversight given the sheer amount of cosmetics at launch and future cosmetic potential.

People like edgy teens and are willing to pay money to be edgier teen-iers. So I think their power was sidelined for the design of everything else.

I wonder if their original power was similar to the Twins, where instead of 2 people, you would be able to control all members of the Legion, and park them at various parts around the map. Then this maybe caused too much issues with camping, body blocking, coding issues etc so it was scrapped and then used later on in the Twins which was a buggy mess at launch. Random theory, but kind of fun to think about.

I remember McCote saying "It's fun stabbing people." That was back when he was originally released, though, when he could stab stab stab and whiffing didn't penalize him. I didn't find this vanilla stabbing nonsense much fun then, but now that whiffing kicks him out of his power, he's definitely not fun.

It's the reason that Legion players give as to why they like the killer though: they enjoy switching their brain off and stabbing people without needing to think about it. I don't see it, but they're probably fun for people who like that kind of gameplay.

Many of my casual DbD friends prefer to play Legion when they play killer. I asked them why since it's not a particularly powerful killer and I got the response that they like their design, their power is easy to understand and fun to use because they go fast, can jump over pallets and windows and can stab multiple people quickly.

So yeah, as someone with many hours into the game, I don't see the appeal of Legion, but I've learned why the casuals like them.

Yeah, I feel like it's 1. The trailer shows Legion disguising as a survivor, and Iron Maiden makes it seem like their power had something to do with lockers. Some people also think that Discordance is meant to break survivors up, in order to make it easier for Legion to disguise as one. Then, there's the thing where Legion is a group, which doesn't contribute to anything. Their name makes it seem like they have a lot of emphasis on being multiple people, but it doesn't matter.
