Have you guys noticed pre legion killer add-ons

I had this pointed out to me recently and I find it really interesting. Basically, before legion, killer add ons are generally on the stronger side and there are way more killers who seem to be add on reliant like wraith, pig, trapper and clown.

After legion killer add ons are very hit or miss, demo used to have bad add ons, most of ghost face’ add ons suck, oni has good add ons, so does plague, but aside from that killer add ons for killers now have been considered unremarkable.

It seems like with and after legions, add ons are designed differently. It seems like before legion, add ons were designed to complement the killer, your MEANT to play the killer with the add ons. Nowadays, add ons are meant to be boosts to your killer, if that distinction makes any sense.

Theres also the fact that back then, add ons usually didn't have downsides. If there were downsides, they were usually just on iridescent, and there would usually be another iridescent or add on that cancels the downside. Infamously like 1 hit down hatchets+ A belt.

its interesting food for thought to think about the shift in add on design. What do you guys think.

Yeah, that was something I noticed a while ago. New addons seem to be designed very cautiously, like they're afraid to give the killer something that's markedly strong. Granted, the oldest killers have gone through plenty of addon passes in their own time (Wraith used to have Lightburn resistance, lunge while uncloaking, and all levels of All Seeing, IIRC), but killers like Hag, Wraith, Pig, Myers, and Spirit all have addons that seem... very unlikely to be greenlighted today, because they drastically add to the killer's performance instead of being a few relatively safe number tweaks here and there. Even the new gameplay style options are worse - take Hag's silent traps or ability to teleport to inactive traps, or Wraith's wallhacks or being able to see which gens are being worked on whenever, and compare that to Pyramid Head getting undetectable if he walks on a trail, or Nemesis gaining 15 of undetectable when he punches a zombie, or Trickster's thing where he exposes you if he gets you to maximum laceration, but only if he M1s. The older examples have way easier use conditions and are more present in the match. I'm not saying there aren't plenty of useless old addons, because there are, but new addons aren't made the same way and I think they could stand to be a little less conservative, especially with iridescents.

There's only one recent killer that stands as a counterexample to all of this, and that's Blight. Man got some really powerful and creative addons, like hindering survivors near his slam locations, or a speed increase for consecutive rushes, or undetectable whenever rushing (which is something he's doing all the time anyway.) I want to see more addon sets like his.

Yes and also they are more boring than they used to be. The add-ons used to be more unique and change the killers power a bit more. Now it’ll be like 4 tiers of quicker reload/extended range. They really stopped at Spirit lol her add-ons are poppin

Yeah I don't think add-ons should be more powerful as they should just be a way to play the killer differently. It's definitely annoying going against a specifically stronger version of the killer just because somebody used an add-on they randomly found in the bloodweb. There should be more consistency in the power levels of add-ons so you can't just stomp survivors for bringing an add-on.

Id disagree, having a generally stronger and diverse add on set helps killers make interesting builds. Plus having a ton of useless add ons or add ons that kinda just all do the same thing is really boring.

For me, the fun add-on mostly around weak killers. Trapper, Shape, Pig, their add-on mostly change play style. Or Killer with multiple abilities to some extend.

Killers with straight forward power's addon are just buffing them in general.

It was a different game early on. It was hide and seek where you'd try to do your objectives without getting caught, but if you did get caught you could be VERY squirrely. Those add ons were there to bite survivors that dared show their face and there was always the risk a killer could have those add ons.

Things are a lot less random now. Even if the killer has powerful add ons you pretty much know what you're getting. Is it bad? Good? Debatable, but it is what it is.
