The Us VS Them mentality of this game is genuinely unbearable
Title. I love this game, i really do. I've clocked in over 2,500 hours and will likely continue to do so until BHVR pulls the plug, but god damn it is really hard to like this game because of the cretins who infest it. I have never seen a more wretched congregation of the most childish, toxic, unbearably sweaty, and downright maliciously cruel playerbase in any game ever. Including league. it is embarrassing to tell people you play this game, because the only image that appears in their head is groups of psychopaths huddling over their monitors conceiving new ways to torture one another. Never once have i witnessed unity on a wide community scale. Theres always that one guy in every comment section, you know the exact one. Doesn't matter what side they play, it literally has never mattered, but they'll get up on their high horse and shout about how much it does. *And people will f-kin a g r e e with them.* Thats really all i have to say, i just needed to vent. I am so unbelievably tired of the endlessly disappointing bad seeds in this community.

There are lots of toxic people, sure. But there is also lots of kind people. I have gotten more friendly messages in 3 weeks of this game than I have in any other online game I have been a part of.

From my experience the game isn’t really that toxic. At least compared to games like OW and siege

I agree with this. I even got signed out of my account last night because my partner had been signed in on my series x, and as she loaded her xbox up and dbd, it signed me out of the game - really stupid feature the series x needs to fix. Anyhow, I got a ggwp instead of the usual assumptions that I’ve rage quit etc. Although I took it with a grain of salt initially, I messaged back and we had a nice conversation.

*me who hates both equally* lo'l jokes aside I agree ppl turned this into their little war and everyone is representing their own side and defends it

If there were more toxic then fun people this game would die, so its not all bad.

On the one hand, I agree. Too many people just blame "the other side" for everything that's wrong with the game.
Here's the thing, though: some negative aspects of the game are the fault of people on one side or the other. Here are a couple examples:
- Why don't we have anti-camping mechanics like slowing down sacrifice speed? Because survivors abused it.
- Why can't killers see survivors' ranks? Because killers abused it.
If I were to mention either one on its own, I'd be accused of anti-[side] or pro-[other side] bias, because people think being "unbiased" means you have to either criticize everything or praise everything, no matter if you're criticizing/praising one side for something mild and another for something serious; gotta engage in false equivalences or you're not "unbiased".
Furthermore, some things are connected. Gen speed and sacrifice speed, for instance. Can't change one without at least thinking about how it affects the other. It's not "us vs. them" or "whataboutism" to consider the game as a whole.

Damn OW maybe has the worst community, impossible to find one match where you aren't insulted by someone.
Tbh DbD has a very chill community. Go to see chat in StarCraft 2, it's unbearable, you can't read it without losing hope in humanity. Each day I have in DbD, chat postgame, some super nice dudes, and even if there are some players out there that are complete piece of sh*t, you can't deny and ignore the fact that if you play "nice", you won't have that much people who will spit on your face, and if you're chill in post game, you can meet some cool people

Siege + others are full of wankers yeah, although at least the petty tribalism isn't present there. I.e. there aren't attacker and defender "mains"

Yeah the OW community is probably the worst I’ve been a part of. I’ve had multiple Xbox messages saying how well I played and the like it’s nice

I do not think it is that bad.
Most people I get are pretty okay with one or two toxic outcasts among them. However when I compare DbD to LoL then this community is heaven. I clearly remember my first match LoL against bots where players flamed me and my first game against real people was just worse. Way to keep new players by the way...
In DbD I get some bad people but mostly people who are quiet and just play the game or who just write "gg wp" and leave. As soon as you do not consider flashlight clickering or something like that an insult to you but rather a strategy to get the Killers attention everything become fine.
I think this community is not that bad. You just have the normal ammount of bad people that you will get in any community. However you will feel the impact of those people a bit more when they are Killer because then they ruin the game for 4 other people.

This is an insightful comment, thank you for the input.

Not gonna lie, very few people sound as poetic as you, when they're venting. By the time I reached wretched congregation, I was sold.

Honestly, it's the Us vs Them in the forums and in general social media that generally irritates me. It's incredibly irritating to see bring up genuine points for the only response to ever he "But SWF/Spirit!!!!11!1!1!!".
Don't get me started his much I hate the fact that people sling "Survivor/Killer Main" around as an insult.
In game though, I've barely encountered any toxicity. I can count on one hand the amount of times I've gotten toxicity in the end game chat.

Well not being able to see Survivor rank is also just smart because people still hold on to that like it means something when it doesnt.
If Otz does not play for the next 3 months and comes back, he will be rank 18 or so and demolish the team, rank =/= skill but many still hold on to that, so yeah not seeing rank is better if only to take away confirmation bias and generlization

Ah, Siege. The game where the anti-toxicity measures were abused to enable toxicity.

It's an assymetrical game. It basically invites the us vs them mentality. I honestly think it's part of the identity of the game having survivors and killers at each others throats.

I don't find the players to be toxic because I have end game chat disabled.
I get the occasional toxic player who will come to my stream, but that is easily dealt with.
The brunt of toxicity is actually on the forums - which is why I wish there was an ignore/block feature here.

This is the only game I've ever played where balance discussions feel exactly like the comment sections on political facebook pages
Endless back-and-forth of whataboutism and personal accusations

They watch streamers and pick up their bad habits and rules.

I haven't really had to deal with bad people in game lately, most people in the end game chat nowadays just say "gg" and move on.
I feel like a lot of the shittalking happens mainly because of ignorance. People clearly prefer a side of the game over the other and then start to heavily gloss over the details to explain their loss or any game events happening they didn't like. I started out playing killer exclusively (instant queues!) but I feel I've adapted a much more chill attitude to the game ever since I also started to play survivor. This way, I see that the things survivors do when I try to kill them are not as simple as they seem and it does make me appreciate good survivor play more when I encounter it instead of being frustrated I lost as a killer.
I feel some people have unreasonable expectations when it comes to this game and it should be tailored for their competitive needs. Sure, this game is competitive, but it's also assymetrical and as a result it'll never be balanced for both sides equally. We can say whatever we want, but in the end there's no game like DBD out there and its uniqueness make it stand out.

On ps4 I'd say for every 3 mean messages, I get 5 nice ones.
Some people might just be having a bad day, or simply don't know how to react.
I find just keeping a cool head prevents escalation.
After all, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

Killers and Survivors play different games. You need to put some effort to exercise empathy here, but you'd be impressed by how much a little positive attitude can turn the tides, especially in a post-match chat.
I had a huntress tunnel a teammate in the beginning, but overall the chases were hella fun. You could see she was trying to thread the needle and going for tricky shots. In the chat I complimented her and she was very apologetic of the tunnel, said the second time was accidental, as it happens with anyone playing killer really. 10/10 would matchmake again any day of the week.
In the forums, it takes a lot more to convince someone that not all arguments laid off are personal attacks. Usually, people here experienced something negative and came to voice their opinions. In some cases, you can get them to rethink even if that means they will stop answering you. Some are persistent though. My approach is to dialog until I identify there is something personal behind all that and make them aware that I'll be laying my final points.

Yeah pretty much. I left the game like a year ago and I’m better off as a result
Overwatch on the other hand...

The community is trash but I can’t bring myself to leave it

I disagree, compared to league of legends the toxicity here is like comparing a sewer (LOL) to unwashed dishes in your sink (DBD) I got death threats almost daily when I played LOL, the worst ''hate'' message I have gotten here so far is ''camping trash killer'' which is nothing compared to the insults I got playing LOL.

From my experience it's not as bad as it could be. We may call opinions killer sided or survivor sided, but there's a surprising lack of accusations of people being "killer mains" and "survivor mains".
