Where are these hex totems?
I would like to put forward an idea to assist players with totems. A large amount of time when myself or my friends are looking for lit totems to get rid of something i run around the entire map and i cant find it, dunno where it is. This can be a really annoying problem, so my suggestion is that once the game is over, a picture of where the totem or totems that were lit could be shown to the survivors. This could be shown as an added slide to the post game menu and should only be revealed once the entire game is finished (just like the killer's perks). I believe this would help new people and even older players with not getting stuck next time because one totem just could not be found. I hope this may be considered and I still love the game although it can be super broken. Peace :)

Or they could give you the possibility to free-roam the map (either as the actual character or as a floating camera with no collision to go through walls, and some aura reading on it possibly, to show you literally everything, totems, chests?)
But there's also perks to help find totems.. Detective's hunch is probably the best one, considering how big the range on that is. Just need to give the camera a 360 to look around you whenever a generator is completed to get a general idea of where the totems are.
(also Small Game and that Jill perk, but I find detective's hunch to be better)
Oh, and maps..
But still, would be interesting to get a checklist of objectives.. "here's where the 7 generators were, this one that one and that one were completed, those weren't.. here's the 5 totems, these 3 got broken, here's a general picture of where the last two were"
But one problem that will probably arise is.. the picture will most likely just be the picture of a wall or something and totally useless as a clue ;p

A bit extraneous. If you want to learn totem locations, you can use a map with red twine (or a rainbow map), perks like Small Game and Detective's Hunch, or play killer and bring hex perks. Really, you can learn a lot about spawns and placements by switching to the other side for a bit.
You can also just ask the killer "hey, where was Ruin?" If they're on the same platform, they'll usually tell you.

Why? They want this to happen once the game is over. At that point why not?

The best alternative for you is to equip Detective's Hunch with a map, Small Game, or Counter Force. Once you get more confident with totem general locations, you can try removing those perks instead.
Most recently, I started bringing totem-hate builds tho. One uncontested Hex can derail the game pretty fast, and Ruin is meta.

the problem though is that the game is completely rng-based. So, even if you were able to load into a custom game by yourself to explore the map, the pallets, totems and gen spawns would still be different in your actual matches.

True. But you would have the same problem with the original post's suggestion. A picture of where it was (or asking the killer and them telling you) is useless if it's a 1/20 chance of spawning there again. But I've seen pretty hard to find spawns on both survivor and killer that I always check on certain maps now because I know they can spawn there. (like some of the ones spawning under tables in classrooms in the Midwich map, or little dead ends here and there in other maps)

I hope your not expecting new and casual players to go memorise totem locations of every map. You realise not everyone has the time to commit to something like that. That's why when there's one totem you couldn't find and you ran around the map bit still didn't find it, your still probably not gonna find it.

Here and there. Everywhere.
Small Game does wonders.

Its really not that big of a task as you make it out to be. There are a lot of common, generic totem spawns inside generic tiles that are seen on nearly, if not all, maps. With quite a few guides out there with totem spawn locations.
