Probably for consistency reasons. Both on the killers end and the survivors. Other than that, no clue.

Gameplay-wise it would probably change how M1 hitboxes work and thats actually something that is the same for every killer.
But at least in some cases you could argue that killers might be ambidextrous. Huntress for example throws her hatchets with the left hand but uses the M1 axe like a right-handed person.

We are used to play right handed characters, I think it would be better to just add an option like Minecraft did that let's you decide freely which hand you'd like to use. Don't know how much work it'd be though 🤔
