Are you excited for more lore featuring Clown and Jake?
As far as Clown is concerned, I think it’s going to be hard to do a successful story with him, as trying to garner any sympathy for him, considering who he’s based on would be quite exploitative. I have a bad feeling about it. He’s one of the least creative killers they’ve ever made imo.
With Jake, I’m really excited for his lore, as there’s a lot they can do with him. He’s one of my favourite survivors, so here’s hoping we get a high quality piece.

You're not supposed to feel sympathy for him anymore than you feel sympathy for that kid that kills neighborhood cats
He's a malevolent individual. Enjoy his evil tendencies.

Lore is one of the things I care about the least in this game. The backstories you can view in the lobby (by pressing left arrow button because I'm on console) is all I need in terms of their lore.
1 -
Yes, you’re right that you’re not, however by doing some tragic backstory, it’s humanising someone who shouldn’t be humanised. In the same way that a movie about person Clown is based on that I will not name that portrays him as anything other than a monster is problematic and disrespectful to the victims.
If they want creative freedom, they shouldn’t base killers on real life evil.

I am mostly excited for new cosmetics in the rift, especially the Jake and Elodie outfits!
for the lore.. not really excited, I will read it/let the narrator read it and watch the scene but as long as it won’t be anything obnoxious I will just be fine with it tbh.. I like their lore entries but I am not too invested..

That's like saying we shouldn't make Jaws movies for the sake of shark attack victims
They can just not watch it, we shouldn't abandon creative freedom for the sake of an infinitesimal portion of the population
4 -
Jaws is a shark, not a person…
You should really look into who clown is based off, and decide if it’s a good idea to humanise the DBD version of him.

Clown and John Wayne Gacy didn't even kill the same type of people
John Wayne Gacy was a closet homosexual that killed teenage boys
Clown kills random people at the circus
You're getting up in arms about nothing

i have been waiting for my survivor main to get lore for forever, so yeah i'm pretty excited
0 -
Nope. I find either character interesting or compelling. There's whiny rich kids and boring serial killers aplenty in the media.
1 -
Just because a character is based off of a real killer doesn't mean they shouldn't have creative freedom with that character.
Now if it were a documentary about said real life killer, then sure. Overly humanizing garbage like that would be an actual disservice to the victims. But clown is a work of fiction, distinct and separate from the reality of the person he was inspired from.
If they want to humanize clown in a way, that's their prerogative.
2 -
Yes. Because real life is full of complexities that people have to learn to accept. Otherwise, it makes it harder for people to accept that the nice person that used to give them free papers and a friendly chat at the local dairy was actually a horrific human being, because they're taught that horrific human beings don't do nice things.
5 -
If that’s how you feel, then fair enough, I just disagree.

This is for profit, not education.
0 -
Same thing. People take ques from all forms of media. Educational mediums are actually the least impactful in terms of changing societies opinions, because someone watching sometning educational is prepared to reactionarily combat any alien ideas. They're mostly useful for sharing information amongs intelligent people and/or artists for those artists to incorporate into their works.
2 -
You’re entitled to your own opinion.

Yes, and creativity is profitable, having the same formula of "bad man do bad thing because uh... he bad." Gets rather boring VERY quickly.
You can't stifle creativity because a small group wouldn't like it.
3 -
Oh, that's actually not an opinion. I was not only taught that, but saw it in action. Think of it as capitalism weaponised for good.
6 -
They haven't humanized every killer at all though. Most of them, sure (though I feel like Nurse's didn't do anything good for her character).
Doctor's, if I remember, right, didn't say anything about some tragic back story. He was a sociopath from the start, and they never attempted to make you feel bad for him. It was just reading about an evil man being evil.
As for Clown's inspiration, Clown is one of the most generic serial killer backstories they've ever released. If he wasn't dressed up as a clown, they wouldn't be compared.
2 -
I love doctor’s lore, and have no issue with it.
1 -
That's good. I'm just pointing out they haven't humanized every killer, because I'd I remember right (which I may not be) Doctor wasn't humanized at all. He was pretty despicable from the first entry down to the last.
If I had to guess, it'll be the same for Clown. Probably Trickster too, whenever we get his tome.
0 -
Yeah, I’m fine with it if it’s in the vain of Doctor. Just not interested in ‘boohoo bad thing happened to the clown feel bad for him’
0 -
True, but sometimes you have to change the formula for killer lore.
Like I said in a comment of mine, having the same formula of "bad man do bad thing because he bad," gets boring very quickly.
You can still have bad people with complex backstories. Like Oni, he's a terrible person because he is a product of his time and environment, as well as him being of an angry temperement. Not because he was born terrible, or all of a sudden became a bad person.
In fact I hope BHVR does more lore like Oni's in the future. It isn't a cut and dry " bad person do bad thing because he bad," and it isn't humanizing him too much either.
Of course you want variety, and sometimes people are just terrible human beings for whatever reason, or sometimes no reason at all.
But with this being a slasher genre, it is getting over played in my opinion.

Clown... couldn't care less.
Jake, sort of.
Jake's outfit is a bit of a downer for me. Looks too plain judging by the teaser, but oh well...

Clown is actually human based on his backstory. If you watch/read stuff like Mindhunters e.g. which is about demystifying of serial killers, then you would realize how close he is to real ones. And it's not problematic to present those people as humans, because they are ones. Yes, that's frightening but actually fairer for the victims than trying to demonizing horrible people, who did unspeakable things. By demonizing them you kinda are trying to put those people as exceptions or look at them as kind of a fantasy, that isn't real. Away from the "normal" protected real world. I'm not a fan of that mystification some serial killer got. Jack the Ripper is the best example for that.
But they are part of the real world. They are humans. Horrible ones, who did unhuman things. But still are human. And showing them like that doesn't make them look like better person. Just human.
4 -
In my option, Clown is the most generic character in the game. He was made for the aesthetic alone, imo. I've got a feeling BHVR knows this. So, either they'll just go full in on his crimes and show him as horrendous person, or there's a chance they'll try and give him more character. I personally don't really care.
0 -
Well, that's fair, but a lot of the killers lore already does that. A lot of it is trying to humanize them. Trapper wasn't born like he is in game, years of abuse and manipulation from his father turned him into what he is.
Wraith wasn't born a murderer, he faced the genocide if his people and watched everything he loved die and burn. The killings of the mercanaries just gave him a taste of vengeance, and Azarov tricking him just pushed him over the edge.
Spirit is probably one of the best examples. She is a victim, being manipulated by a force she can't possibly understand.
Oni is just as you said, a product of his time.
But in Clowns case, I don't think he needs a sob story. It just doesn't fit, in my opinion.
1 -
Technically clown already had a bit of a sob story. What with him having a bad childhood because his dad blamed him for his mom's death. His backstory doesn't delve too far into it more than that.
But often I find that the tome trailers can sometimes be misleading with what story the tome will actually tell.
Maybe we'll actuslly hear about that serial killer on clown's territory, which we learned about from a rift cosmetic. It seems like too good of a story to just leave it in a cosmetic without elaboration.
0 -
I'm excited for Clown's lore expansion but I'm not really a fan of Jake so I don't really care about his lore. From what I've seen, Clown is just straight-up evil with his father being at fault. We'll see tho.

Clown lore should be a 30 000 word essay on the forbidden art of finger snacking.
0 -
The title of the essay should be "It's finger lickin' good."
0 -
This. Those backstories are the only lore for me, as I completely disregard everything the Tomes give to us.
1 -
I never cared nor read any of lore in tomes. DBD lore doesn't interest me in the slightest...new skin for Elodie however is something that I am really looking for, ngl
0 -
Lore wise. Yes! As I won’t be paying for the rift for certain reasons. The lore recently has been pretty good recently so I want to see what they’ve created for my 2 fav characters
0 -
i disagree, evil individuals are still humans and have human in them... besides clown might have not allways been this crazy killers kid, abuse probably turned him into a psychopath
0 -
I'm a Jake main, 'nuff said.
1 -
It's not canon to you or what? To me, it's just extra information.
1 -
To me, they are not canon. What is written in the backstories is all I have to know.
1 -
Both them are boring characters, so i will say no.
