Do You Want MMR in DBD?
Comments

By the way @Pulsar, thanks for including an "unsure" option because I genuinely don't know which direction the game should take. For all its flaws, I do love this game and don't want to see it die. All I can do is hope the devs make the right decisions (and complain on the forums in the meantime lol).

The idea is going to drive many of the Killers away and make people play a lot more survivor. It will also show what's strong in the game and what's not, but ultimately the game won't be able to survive without it's Killer base.
Yes I understand most players play both roles, but que times are going to become awful when no one wants to play Killer anymore.
1 -
Honestly I do. I'm a casual player and matchmaking in it's current state has me going up against far more skilled players than I like, which means most of my matches end up being sweaty AF! LOL I certainly don't want to spoil matchmaking for anyone else, but I do like to play this game from time to time, and the last thing I want to do is get steamrolled for hours on end.
1 -
Hell to the bloody no
3 -
I'm amazed after the last years of balance decisions, performance issues, chat filter, and buggy patches, players have faith in the devs implementing a new feature without telling us how it works, what it measures, or the ratings of players after matches.
"When will you learn!"
5 -
First, I'm a killer main, so this is my perspective from being a good killer, but not that great at survivor(and probably not enough recent matched to operator on.
Second, MMR is working.
For a while I would have said bring MMR on so that there can be an objective stance on balance so that the game can have informed changes. With the realization that BHVR let a large portion if not the majority of their playerbase have a broken game for weeks, what are the odds that they'll make sweeping changes to maps and the base mechanics to the game? I don't think they'll put in the effort. They'll just stick the less skilled players together and call it a job well done.
After unknowingly playing several MMR matches of survivors with killers I have played a decent amount of recently, I've come to the conclusion that higher level DBD just devolves into the most boring schlock imaginable. By that, I don't mean frustrating like how it's commonly misused in the player base. I mean literally boring. It usually becomes a waiting game of seeing who screws up the positioning first. It simultaneously has the stress of an exam mixed with uninteresting moments, and every match will be like this. There is no chill game.
If the devs want to implement MMR, they're going to have to do a lot of work so that it doesn't become a matter of the game being fun at first, but becoming progressively more miserable the better you get. Also, I tried playing a killer I haven't touched for a while (Ghostface). Sure enough, it worked as intended, and I got some goofballs. Not necessarily terrible survivors across the board, but some that didn't immediately go for split gens. I guess the game has deemed I'm a pretty good Huntress and Clown. It'll be interesting to see where it puts me with Nurse and Blight.
edit: Then again, I was spammed with Coldwin maps, so maybe that's feeding into it.
2 -
Yes, please quarantine the sweaty tryhards to their own little salt mine and the rest of us can actually have fun in the game consistently.
4 -
MMR. Please. I am so sick of red ranks five games in a row, then a barely competent 16 with no perks. I'm a middle of the road survivor, I shouldn't be getting the far ends of the skill spectrum and nothing else.
3 -
It doesn't punish people for being tryhards. It puts good players against the tryhards, which inevitably forces the sweaty playstyle if you don't want a loss streak.
6 -
Correct
5 -
Exactly if it means that much to you to win consistently then youre probably a tryhard. If it didnt matter to you then youd take the L and have fun in the next one.
I dont care, if it means i get a sweaty match once every 3-4 matches then who cares ill die or get a 4e and get set back to the matches i was having fun with. Escaping or getting kills arent really consistent with having fun, at least for me.
2 -
Wanting = tryharding
OKAY.
7 -
Okay tryhard
4 -
Does this mean I finally get to play with the other potato players out there? I wouldn't mind really

"They don't have to address anything. See optimization."
True - I guess they don't. But I believe the whole reason why they are taking these steps is to address these issues. Why else would they be doing this?
"They could've just updated the pip system, but they chose to make a mystery MMR system."
Updating the Ranking System we have now won't solve the biggest problems of matchmaking, which is:
1. it only has 20 different ranks, with matchmaking algorithm allowing plus/minus 6 rank limit. In other words, a Rank 10 player can be matched with Rank 4 to Rank 16. This system allows the continuation of pretty much anyone of any skill level to be matched with each other. Furthermore, because of the limitation of number of ranks, within each single rank, there could be someone who are much, much better than the other. One Rank 5 player can be in a totally different ball park than another Rank 5 player. This is especially true in Red Ranks, where the rank is capped at Rank 1. That's why there are players in Red Rank who barely seem to understand the game, and players who can probably escape/kill with their eyes closed - because they are all pushed into the same category.
2. the "Rank Reset" each month allows much better players to curb-stomp newer players until they are back in the red ranks - giving awful impression to the newer players about this game. The reason we have a "Rank Reset" is because, given enough time, too many people of differing skill level will end up in the red ranks (emphasizing the first problem above) but from new players perspective, this is a deal-breaker, which is part of the reasons (albeit a tiny part) why this game can't seem to retain new players.
SSMR should bypass both of these problems.

I think a lot of people complaining about current matchmaking are conflating two issues: the emblem system, and how DBD prioritizes matchmaking when queues get too long.
When queue times are good for both sides, I rarely see players outside red /purple ranks on either side in matches. I definitely see some bad teammates/killers in red ranks, but for the most part, I get decent matches. It's only in the evenings when survivor queues break past 5 minutes that I start seeing rainbow ranks and wacky matches.
This isn't the fault of the ranking system. This is BHVR deciding that it's better to throw you into an unbalanced match rather than make you wait longer. I highly doubt this will change in a new MMR. As queue times increase, the server will broaden the range of acceptable MMR ratings in an effort to minimize queue times.

I'm pretty fine with it. I don't really like doing stomps and I've been getting matched up with a lot of newbies lately and it's just not fun and nobody learns anything from it. I'd rather be going against people closer to my level anyway. Also getting matched with ultra sweaties and tryhards is something that 90% of us here won't have to worry about honestly. Top % play being the way it currently is because of poor game design which needs to be addressed at some point, it's got nothing to do with ranks or tryhards.
1 -
And our current system doesn't ######### over new players?
Also, BHVR literally said they'd get 60 FPS on Xbox One and PS4 2.5 years ago.
2 -
"And our current system doesn't [BAD WORD] over new players?"
Yes, the current Ranking system is awful for new players. That's the entire point I was making.
"Also, BHVR literally said they'd get 60 FPS on Xbox One and PS4 2.5 years ago."
I'm talking about the SMMR system; not their failure in the optimization department. Unless you are implying that one aspect of their failure will indicate that they will always fail in every department. Then why ask for changes at all?
3 -
It will kill the fun out the game.
Will it kill the game? Probably not, many people are too addicted to stop playing, me included
4 -
Since the "new" MMR is out, my queue is really long now. First game was around like 8 minutes and the last one 10 minutes. But killer was now insane fast. I was rank 5, one pip left for rank 4 and my last two games as surv was horrible.
First game against Trapper. One of my surv mades was really good. The other two was potatoes. Feels like Killer was Rank 7, the good surv red rank and the two potatoes yellow or green but I bet it's yellow.
And the second game was against the Clown. Same like with Trapper.
I really wonder how they (I call them yellow) could join the lobby. I thought it's now skill based matchmaking. And running into the face from the killer, loop him for 3 seconds or sacrifice yourself on first Hook is no skill for me.

Wasn't the mmr test disabled like instantly?
4 -
I had yesterday this two matches without any rank picture. So I think it was the new matchmaking system or not? Or was this a bug?
0 -
As a survivor, during the previous MMR tests, solo q felt much better to be in. I saw teammates trying without anything egregiously stupid, and we actually turned games around whereas normally they would be lost causes. The killers also felt around our skill level, so the back and forth playing was more fun.
As a killer, the matches feel like they have more action with those back and forth counterplays. I also enjoy playing killer, so a match where I have to use all the tools available to me is fun, even if it's a 0k-1k. Normally, I'm bored of stomps where the survivors stand no chance, and like everyone else, I don't like getting stomped by a 4-stack swf with thousands of hours between them.
2 -
Oh because noobs getting matched with pros consistently is better?
5 -
Yes! It's the most accurate way to collect data so we can finally balance the game!
2 -
Again, adjust the pip system.
Make it harder to rank up and bring back old Rank Reset.
Besides, that won't change with MMR. Queue times will be worse.
2 -
Of course you play it to have fun but so do other people, including casual and newer players.
For the sake of argument let's say there's 10 players in the queue-
One is a legacy nurse. Agitation, starstruck, infectious, knockout. She considers a game a loss if more than 2 gens get done. Red ranks, unsurprisingly.
One is an experienced swf team with a combined total of 16k hours. They've been playing together for years and they do whatever it takes to win. Red ranks.
One is a killer player whose only been playing for a couple of months and are naturally pretty good, but they've risen through the ranks quickly, hitting red for the first time and are starting to struggle, it doesn't help that they have barely any perks.
One is a group of megheads who make impressively bad decisions. They'll step in bear traps they personally saw being placed, work on gens with RBTs on, and all take protection hits even when the hook is so close it won't do anything. Red ranks, because they play a lot.
MMR would, if working as intended, make the obviously correct matchup here. Current system may or may not, these players are all treated the same way.
MMR would give 10 players a match that reflected their experience and capabilities. Current system has just as good a chance of giving 5 players an easy win, whether that's fun or not for them really depends on them, and the other 5 might start considering if it's finally time to uninstall.
5 -
I don't think this is good idea. The more you win, the more you lose (more sweat, more tryhard, less fun overall for both sides). It's more casual game anyway.
2 -
I want MMR bc its boring to play against and with weaker player.
As survivor i mostly need to do 3 gens and the killer ignores me bc i dont go down in 15 seconds. I get often killers who dont even try to mindgame and dont learn from their mistakes.
As killer you stomp one team after another and everything other than a 4k would be embarrassing. Then you get a good team but you dont play 100% until its too late.
But i think you need to see your own MMR.
2 -
Here's my opinion on MMR
2 -
obviously yes and everyone who doesnt either has no clue of how it actually works OR wants to stomp noobs which arnt people who's opinion we should respect.
3 -
Do I want something better than what we have right now? Yes, definitely. I think anyone can see the very clear flaws.
Do I think an MMR solution is fitting for a casual game that, for some damn reason, tries to be competitive, one that's heavily RNG on top of that? No, definitely not.
2 -
Alienating people is a great way to convince them!
Also, you have no idea how it works either.
It could literally be the same system, just hidden for all we know.
5 -
No.
2 -
Yes.
There is no reason to not want it (if it would work)
Everyone who says they dont want it because they dont want to ,,sweat" everygame and because competive DBD is annoying, forgets how it feels like to play against extremly good players where you barely stand a chance.
2 -
^ This.
People complain about playing against equal skilled players because competive DBD is ,,boring" but completely forgets how it feels like to play against waaaay better players you barely have a chance against.
3 -
Yes to SBMM. It will make the game easier for most people.
The only people that need to fear the SBMM are: Streamers and Seal team 6 SWF squads. Everyone else will have nice balanced matches.
4 -
Yes, only entitled killer mains are scared of sbmm bc they won't be able to stomp soloq random ranks teams 24/7 and call it skill
0 -
yes, the last mmr test was pretty good in my experience.
6 -
I wouldn't put it as harshly as that but I am getting the impression that a lot of very experienced killers feel that maybe one in ten games should be an actual challenge and the other nine should basically be clubbing some baby seals to death at 5 gens. And that not having these seals available to them is a form of "punishment for being good at the game"
And experienced survivors too
1 -
Don't make this a killer vs survivor thing. A lot of survivors don't like MMR either, because they think they'll always go up against strong killers if MMR is enabled.
0 -
I don't want to do that so I edited it
0 -
I'd like the MMR for the matchmaking to be better balanced.... players testing new killers to them are nearly a rank 15 or something, so they shouldn't be going against players that are equal to their skill level they are with their main. I am also hoping for it to fix the random rank 20 vsing a 4man rank 1's etc...
this system isn't going to destroy the community and how it is... you'll still have the random matches where 4 claudettes surround a burning barrel and then do slow mode follow the leader throughout the map...
3 -
I do but I want to have a Ranked mode with specific rules (like max 2 same perks per group, map bans, unique survivors, etc) and a casual mode with the same rules we have now.
1 -
Individual killer MMR is the main selling point. There is nothing more off-putting about playing killer, than facing nothing but red rank teabag squads because you ranked up to purple on easy mode via Spirit/Freddy, only to be unable to play any other killer because no other killer can stand a chance against them. Given that the perk grind is monumentally insane, any new killers don't have much of a choice but to play the easy ones, in order to reliably grind out enough BP. This very quickly catapults you up into the "no play" zone and suddenly your entire experience is ruined.
That alone will get more people playing killer, which will make for healthier queues.
The idea that MMR will "kill the game" or that you'll only ever go against Nurse and Spirit is nonsense. MMR won't suddenly produce new players to fill queues for you, it will still only have the available players to work with, so without an endless supply of Nurses and Spirits that's not going to happen. Also, you're probably vastly overestimating your skill and your derived MMR value if you think you are going to be in that top 0.1% of players. Sure, maybe Otz and Tru3 and the like will find themselves against significantly more Nurses or top tier survivor commando squads, but 98% of players won't, not you.
I've played the past two MMR tests and each one has worked brilliantly for me as killer and survivor.
Players need to ween themselves off relying on ranks to determine skill.
2 -
I would buy that if the amount of players was low, but it is one of the most steam played games i highly doubt it would make queues bad and i don't think a higher proportion of survivors would want to go ranked in comparison to killers. The main reason i'd like those 2 queues is to be able to still play meme build without having to lose mmr in the ranked mode. Maybe you are right but i hope they at least try it if more people want it.
1 -
Queues are already bad when there's an imbalance between survivors and killers, and turning off crossplay (which would cut the player pool down about as much as having two different play modes would) already noticeably increases queue times.
We already have a casual mode, it's called Custom Game.
0 -
You mean if i want to have longer queue times just for more sweatier matches in the long run?
MMR will only make solo q better if you think about it. Which is... a good thing. Not for killers tho, esp. for ppl who main only 1 or 2.
