Spirit players
I asked this spirit in post game chat if footsteps were still bugged and they said you could never hear them in the first place, that she wasn't nerfed, and that I was just mad. Ignoring their attitude, is what they said true? Is this some mandela effect where Spirit never was able to hear footsteps but everyone thinks she did? I swear I could hear footsteps when I played her.

I play Spirit a lot and it is a bug. I was able to hear footsteps before this midchapter but now I can’t. Not sure who told you otherwise but sounds like they don’t play Spirit that much.

I dont play spirit much but i know you could hear them before now maybe he did not hear them well because of the chase music that a possibility the number of time i lose track of the survivor because of that is insane so it could be that

Sounds tend to be bugged a lot, but they are a lot more noticeable when playing as spirit.
But footsteps have always been audible as spirit with sometimes individual survivors bugging out and stopped making any sounds altogether.
It's probably the most frustrating aspect about trying to play spirit, you are often more just fighting whether or not the game just decides to bug out sounds on you.

Its very similar to the Iron Will bug when using certain perks with survivor. For instance when im using Chris with Flashbang something (still haven't figured out exactly what) and im injured i will make no noise as if i had Iron Will when i dont but if i go in a locker and when exiting from one im noisy again so..

100% a bug. Audio isn't even consistent from map to map in a normal month.

It's a bug.
I could 100% hear footsteps before. It's how I caught IW users since I stopped using Stridor even before the nerf.

The devs already acknowledged it as a bug.
You could hear footsteps. It was especially notable on Swamp or Red Forest. As long as sounds decided to work.
