Are leaks good or bad for DBD?

Note: This isn't hate towards leakers or people who keep up with leak pages (I do too), I just want to see what people think.

Leaks really for any game tend to not be the best thing personally, but for DBD it seems like leaks and leak pages are just widely accepted, often posting about future content that is way in advance. I just have to wonder if this a good thing or a bad thing? In some ways it has been positive, often giving us information and dates for things - something that BHVR is very lacking in and could definitely improve on.

But in some other ways leaks also seem really negative. They "spoil" surprises (and before someone says 'just don't look at them lol' they inevitably get spread around if you follow things relating to DBD, its almost hard NOT to see them if you're a fan of the game) for upcoming tomes, skins, changes and even chapter reveals (as we've seen with Hellraiser, indicating early on the chapter would be licensed) - potentially losing the hype / surprise of the teasers (or creating miss-directed hype). Another negative I'd like to highlight was the controversy surrounding the anniversary cakes, where DBD forums and twitter were hounded by players demanding the cakes be stackable based on some assumed left-over code from the year before. It's strange.

There are so many leaks pages and people who discuss them, my question really is do you think they positively or negatively impact the game? Yes, getting early inside knowledge on upcoming content is fun, but then it kind of ruins the surprise and excitement?

I personally don't mind them, as it gets me excited and hyped to what to look forward to. Makes me play the game even more if I'm honest and making me theorize of what's to come or what that specific leak could actually mean

    Depends on the leaks.

I dont mind skins being leaked and stuff like that, but sometimes it can ruin a bit of the "mystery" like when Ghostface was leaked.

Good and bad - It can cause a lot of misinformation but it can also build hype and keep the community engaged. In my opinion having a little bit of information leaked each chapter that turns out to be accurate is actually good. It starts early and healthy discussion over features by community members who actually are heavily invested into the game.

I would say that information of dates or pictures of future content should not be published.

Besides that, it's pretty exciting for me to read about cosmetics that are about to come. since we don't get any idea of next cosmetics themes it's nice to look forward for something that we might be interested in.

^^^ this. I'd honestly say the devs should be more forgiving about discussing skin leaks.

talking about those can get people hyped and put money to the side for it (see the recent cat&dog ones), or allow last minute tweaks when a lot of people point out something doesn't work in the design

I personally love em. I know it's bad for the devs when stuff leaks out, but personally it gets me so excited!

It wouldn't be such a big deal if BHVR would learn to A: be more forthcoming with information and B: acknowledge the leaks when they happen and give us whatever teaser or other information they have.

Generally i wouldn’t mind but there are some cases where it was actually bad as the community expected the info of leakers to be true even though it was just speculation on their part (LGBTQ+ theme for Tricksters chapter; the RE cosmetics were supposedly meant to not be linked which just isn’t true)

A: be more forthcoming with information

This has nothing to do with leaks. They withhold information on new chapters and so on to build hype. This is the rule, not the exception.

B: acknowledge the leaks when they happen and give us whatever teaser or other information they have.

That makes no sense. A leak is essentially revealing a secret. Why should they just spill all of them afterward? That'd ruin the whole thing.

    Depends on game tbh.

Pokemon gets data mined all the time and the storyline/pokedex is a key part of the games. If people don't like the leaks, they won't buy the game so Nintendo loses all sales. So, in that case leaks are bad.

For DBD, they are constantly adding new characters that can't be data mined that far into the future. Most of the income is through outfits, rift pass etc. Leaks can probably help most of the time hype up more since people already own the game.

I think leaks are an integral part of any prosperous community, so I'd hope that the whole community could recognise that. Right now, they're not huge compared to other communities', but they sure have the potential to be.

Or maybe I don't think that... Maybe I'm being a good boy for my jail sentence.

Nah. I do believe that. Hellraiser leaks have me hyped! I'm going to be quite upset if it was all a joke...

The Hellraiser stuff is actually all official clues/hints plus speculation and not leaks iirc.

No it's not confirmed, but there's ample evidence that we have -- most likely -- genuine leaks. But, knowing how gaming companies work, this could all be one big fool... we'll just have to wait and see!

Leaks literally saved the anniversary event, cakes were not going to stack and helped me saving cells for interesting skins/sales

Besides I don’t see anything wrong and if you like surprises then block leak accounts

It's on BHVR for constantly getting their content leaked. I'm neutral on it.

Or the devs were already aware of the bug and were fixing it without the leakers doing anything.

I don't mind, It's always your own choice to go towards those Twitter accounts or websites.

  • Orion
    Orion Member Posts: 21,675

One of those websites is the official DbD forum. Are you just supposed to avoid any and all websites related to DbD?

  • SloppyVoldemort
    SloppyVoldemort Member Posts: 452

    Am I saying that? No.

But if you see "leaks" in the title of the twitter or website, maybe, just maybe, you can guess that there are spoilers on those websites, right?

And then it's your OWN fault if you click on those and get spoilered. Not the fault of other people.

So what do you do when those leaks are posted on the official Dead by Daylight forum?

  • SloppyVoldemort
    SloppyVoldemort Member Posts: 452

Remove them? Report them to the mods and let them remove it?

Can you just think for a second? Jeez.

I like seeing leaks for cosmetics ^^

I don't like it when the hype train comes to a stop when a chapter is spoiled intentionally or unintentionally :<

I prefer official information from either BVHR or a CM, not leaks because they aren't comfirmed and don't seem healthy for the game.

the funny thing is when skins are leaked, im more likely to buy them since i can prepare for them

Leaks aren't really problematic. And nature of things. What is more problematic is when people spread misinformation. E.G. taking speculation as a leak, or claim teasers as leaks etc. But misinformation is a general rule on the net. And sadly quite natural.

They could be more forthcoming with information by simply saying something like "between chapters 21 and 22 we'll be releasing cosmetics for "x" characters, a map rework, a bloodhunt event, and "x" killers/perks will be receiving adjustments". That takes a lot of the information leaders put out away from them.

There's no reason not to go ahead and release official info once it's been leaked. Take the new chapter for example. BHVR made a mistake (similar to a leak) and revealed the next chapter. That took away a lot of the hype for the full trailer reveal. They could have saved it though by releasing the full trailer early and included some information about the killer and perks, and announced the official PTB date so people could spend the weekend speculating about how to use the killer and perks and how they'll work with existing game mechanics. But instead most of the discussion around it faded over the weekend except for the FNAFers that are in denial. The only exception would be of they're contractually forbidden from releasing information.

Leaks are somewhat controlled. We don't get info on what the next chapter will be about, it's apparently only hype on skin info, which helps the game a lot, and really really vague original characters info as in next chapter will be 2 survivors and 1 killer and whatnot. It wouldn't surprise me that the leaks are revealed to be controlled by BHVR all along.
