I dont think McLean leaving is any of our business but we should know why they're not renewing the Stranger Things license.
Specially when they said there wouldn't be more exclusives, and look now, 3 iconic characters are going to be exclusive.
14 -
Yeah, i didn't like reading the FAQ and the very first question just not being answered at all.
13 -
The only answer we can give about "why" is answered on the FAQ.
13 -
At least some info on whether or not these two things are connected or just unfortunate timing.
As for the exclusives, I think they just meant cosmetics like yun-jin's polkadot shirt
0 -
To be fair,Stranger Things wasn't planned to be an exclusice, but rather happened to end up as one.
3 -
Their hands are probably tied by a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo and can’t really give more info.
16 -
no. that's not an answer to 'why' that is just stating what will happen. a why-answer would be
'Currently we are not in the position to renew the license'
'Due to unforeseen developments we can't renew the license'
i hope not. I know nda's are a pain in the rear, but at least something to clear up what happened to cause this should be within the boundaries
12 -
If we see a Stranger Things mobile game that'll be announced in the upcoming 2-3 months, you know why. At least, this is a rumor I heard.
Corporations doing what corporations do.
12 -
If they barely talk to us about minor changes, imagine talking to us about something as delicate as a license.
3 -
This is the opposite of an answer to 'why'.
7 -
Legally they cannot say the real reason as to why it's happening. It's a legal thing.
2 -
My guess - and it is just that, a guess - is that the terms of the license are simply expiring and that the loss of the Hawkins map is in some way due to its nature as the one free element of the package that was provided to all players regardless of whether they purchased any Stranger Things content.
I'm not sure if we'll ever know. I just hope that the removal of major content like maps or characters doesn't become a trend. I don't want this to be setting a precedent for the game. Regardless of how I or anyone else may subjectively feel about the various content in Dead By Daylight, the removal of any of that content is not an inherently positive thing.
1 -
ok....can you tell use WHY you cant give us more information? who is preventing this? do you guys have intel on future plans from Netflix or so that you are not allowed to share or what?
2 -
This doesn't make sense when we talk about Dead by Daylight. Corporations honestly DO want their games/movies to be part of Dead by Daylight universe, it's marketing at least.
DBD does not rival, it does add.
1 -
Not connected at all! McLean's decision is his, and his alone and I am sure he will share more on his new opportunities when he is ready.
6 -
Are you going to make the perks of those characters baseline? Because for future players those 9 perks are immpossible to get and if for some crazy reason they become meta perks thats very unfortunate. This question is indrictly asks if we are going to loose more content in the future what about perks? Some of the best perks are from licenced characters (BBQ, DS, BT, Ubreakable, ...)
1 -
You guys realize this information is pure up straight business, right? It has nothing to do with the game itself but the companies behind the DLC (Netflix and BHVR), we as costumers shouldn't expect to receive details like this. If anything, giving this information to us would just make people have the wrong assumptions,.
2 -
The perks will be added to the Shrine, most likely with different names and icons.
3 -
Because you don't need to know about it and it won't change the result: you can't buy Stranger things stuff after November 17.

While I'd love an exhaustive answer on why it's happening, it's clear Behaviour can't say anything.
My guess is the license holders saw the success ST had on DbD and decided they wanted their own, exclusive game, and wanted to remove any competition. They didn't remove the characters and perks in DbD just because they can't, legally speaking. Unsurprisingly the only "free" (of legal obligations) content ST-related is going away. Again, this is just my guess and it's 100% speculation.

Thank you. So we can at least scracth 'bhvr bankruptcy' off the board
y'know, i really wonder how many dbd fans will, if this is the reason, go and play said exclusive netflix game.

This is not that uncommon a practise with licensed game content.
Recently, the Scarface character/map was removed from Payday 2 due to a licensing expiration.
It does happen.
I'm just hoping they give Hawkins a lick of paint, removing all the licensed elements, and rebrand it in to DBD lore.
Also, this acts as a warning when putting time and effort in to maps which involve licened content. The characters are for keeps...but the maps could be gone forever.
2 -
I would.
The pixel game for Season 3 was surprisingly good.
1 -
For this reason I hope they reskin the Hawkins Lab into something else, possibly edit some of the areas to be just different enough to not be exactly similar. I could see the layout of hawkins working as an abandoned Mineshaft, a different area of Lery's, or even as a prison.

It's possibly the only answer they can give you and honestly I don't see why you need any more. It would be nice to have details however it isn't really needed.
1 -
This. People forgot it's a company, not our friends. They don't have to tell us everything, especially if they can't by some legal reasons.
2 -
BHVR has never been transparent about this sort of thing, look at Scream and the Ghostface DLC. I will give you the answer: BHVR made a temporary deal (in which paid content would remain forever but no longer be purchasable, while free content like the map would disappear) and either chose not to renew it to save money, or Netflix wasn't interested in renewal. We will never know which because BHVR isn't open about this stuff. It's completely possible that this could happen again depending on the length of the licensing deals made.

Dont worry everyone:
"nExT cHaPtEr Is jAsOn!"

Actually yes. It's like a professor unwilling to share you the result of their test within a week... they have a responsability to do so as people are customers, imagine me providing you a service then removing it and saying "you don't need to know why, it won't change the result anyway"... so yes, people do have a right to know, specially when they paid for said product.
2 -
NDAs are a thing, and quite common in matters of licensing.
6 -
Imagine thinking you're entitled to know the business practices of a company you're not on the board to. Just because you gave them money doesn't mean you get to know how often they flush their toilets.
7 -
But you've paid for it and will get to keep it, you aren't owed any more as you can still use what you've paid for, it's really not that hard to understand.
4 -
No, but as a customer you get to know what the reason is, because that will gives you a head up if you want to keep investing on it or not. Stop thinking that you deserve to be treated like potato bags. You purchased something and it's normal to know why they can't keep it, whether it's for license issues or not... YOU are the one who paid for it. As I said, I can't remove your internet services and tell you "yes, but if you have downloaded something, you can still have it", you're paying for it and you deserve to know what's going on.

If you paid for the chapter, you get to keep the characters. If you didn't, then you didn't pay for it, and therefore, by your logic, are not owed any satisfaction.
The map itself is free and can be added/removed at their discretion, like everything else in the game (it's in the EULA you agreed to).
1 -
thanks but you are not in a position to talk for the devs, it was not directed at you soooo yeah.

You don't get the point, you're a customer and you get to know why something that you used to purchase, it won't be available anymore... it's not that dificult to understand. As an example, when they shut down the serves for deathgarden they didn't say "we are closing the servers" and that's all, the reason was that the player base was not as big as expected and actually they were losing money instead of earning by keeping the servers on... when Bill couldn't come to consoles they said "license problems" because you, as a customer have the right to know and them as a company has a right to inform you. You're not asking how much in taxes they pay which is totally unrelated, it's something about a product that you are purchasing.
3 -
>when Bill couldn't come to consoles they said "license problems"
It's the same reasoning here. License problems. Why is that valid reasoning for Bill, but not for Stranger Things in your eyes?
5 -
None of that little paragraph has anything to do with that you have no business in their business decisions as a business.

I already purchased it, so it makes no difference to me whether or not it's available for purchasing any more - I already own it.
Products get discontinued all the time without any justification being given. This is the rule, not the exception. Besides, anyone can put two and two together and realize it's a licensing issue.
The reason why makes no difference to you either, anyway. You either purchase it now, while it's still available, or you don't.
If they told you it was because one of the Netflix execs got a little drunk, the content would still be unavailable for purchase after the cut-off date.
If they told you it was because the Demogorgon was giving them nightmares, the content would still be unavailable for purchase after the cut-off date.
If they told you it was because that sailor outfit was distracting, the content would still be unavailable for purchase after the cut-off date.
Get the point? This is useless information that you can extrapolate anyway from the fact that it's a licensed chapter.
1 -
They never formally stated it, look at the FAQ if you want.
0 -
Would that affect your purchase? No, because either way, you still need to buy it before the cut-off date or have it lost to you forever.
0 -
As with all live-service games, frequent updates, additions, and the occasional change are to be expected.
this is the vaguest response to what probably was netflix increasing the cost of renewing the license and bhvr saying "######### that"

A side question: When do the sales take effect in-game? I launched it an hour ago and not only are there no sales on any Stranger Things content, there's no in-game announcement of it either (there's also no notice about this on this forum's news page, where I think it would be worth making the comment). Anyway my point is that while I guess I need to re-read the release, I thought that the sales were effective immediately.
0 -
That's not the point and it's not about the purchase. What's so hard to understand? Listen, did they never intended to make ST dlc to be always in the store? Was that something they have already planned? Because if it's so, they need to be clear about it. And yes, it does affect you. Does that mean that some characters will be available only "in seasons" like For Honor? And yes, there are "season licensed characters" in many games such as Fortnite so yes, you have the right to know if the characters do stay in-game as supposed as in this was just a license issue or as "this was something intentional"? Because if they're going to start seasonal characters that means people need to be aware that certain character won't be always available on-store... so when you purchase/don't purchase a character, you know that siad purchase will still be available as within the game or it will be available just for a few months/years.

They won't answer, so at least I answered what they would most likely say.

In all fairness that's the cost of doing business. In this modern age, when you buy a game, you're actually paying for the right to "lease" it. They can change it whenever they want, for whatever reasons they want. Granted, if a developer or publisher want to maintain a positive image it's generally in their best interests to keep things at a minimum, but the fact that they're not being completely transparent with us as to the reasoning actually isn't an aspect of this situation that bothers me. BHVR is beholden to their contracts, their copyrights, their licensees, their NDAs. We, as the audience, are - as the old saying goes - on a "need to know basis". And we don't NEED to know why these changes are being made right now.
It's perfectly normal to be concerned. I am, just like most others here. But I won't be demanding any answers because I've come to accept that this is just how things work. If there's information that BHVR can legally share and thinks that it will be to everyone's benefit to do so, they will. If not, I trust that there are legitimate reasons for it. It's a bummer, but it's just how things are.
2 -
I don't think you realise how much this simply isn't true, no service has to give you an explanation for anything, nothing is being removed that I have paid for, it's being removed for those who haven't paid for it, if you have paid nothing is changing.
If you read any EULA or any Contract with any company it will state that they can remove access at their discretion, which absolutely means they don't have to tell you why.
3 -
That's the safe and allowed answer. people are right, they most likely aren't allowed to say why they're removing it.
My guess is and it's only a guess, the license was only for so long and that time is up, To renew the license would be too expensive. Or they just don't want to do it.

Can we keep the old icons if we already unlocked them?
0 -
They’re not going to reveal the terms and conditions of their licensing agreements to the general public. It doesn’t matter what justified reason you think you have for knowing it, it will not be revealed because it would be detrimental to their business to share it.
“Yeah we made an agreement with Netflix but just for two years” - now imagine a different license holder, say Konami, sees this and it’s different from the terms they agreed to, which sours the relationship. Why would any business potentially sabotage itself in this way?
