I won't lie, I'm worried

With the Stranger Things license going away by the end of the year, means that any license could face the same fate in DBD.

Knowing that new players to the game will be facing a killer and working alongside survivors that they themselves will not be able to purchase is no doubt going to look really odd, but what's even scarier is knowing that BHVR may no longer be updating the characters in any way shape or form from here on out. Why spend precious development resources into updating something you no longer have a license to and can no longer make money from? Makes you wonder what other licenses could be on the verge of ending and could face the same fate? With the recent resurgence of the Halloween movies, no doubt the price for renewing the license will increase.

The Halloween license is the safest atm, they literally renewed it 2-3 months ago. If the license holds up as long as before, then we will have Halloween for another 4 years.

They won't be updating the Stranger Things content anymore.

In terms of the Halloween chapter, I'm not too worried. The newer Halloween movies in the series are under different companies and different licensing, so Dead by Daylight should be fine as they have the rights to the original 1978 version. Still annoying knowing Nancy, Steve and Demogorgen will be receiving the "Nightmare on Elm Street" treatment forevermore in the future with no new cosmetics or updates ever coming.

The only reason a license would meet the same fate is if the license holder doesn't want to renew the license or they just can't ever come to an agreement. I don't think we should be looking at this as a BHVR issue and more a license holder issue (in this case it's Netflix). I wouldn't worry too much about Halloween and other licenses. Also like others have said, they just renewed Halloween, so it's the safest.

Also this issue has always been something to fear. I think the reason we're all thinking about it is because it just happened. However, every time a license is up for renewal this is/should be a concern.

The other licenses will likely be fine. Still depressing that a licensed chapter had to go though.

Hopefully so, because considering how popular Halloween has become again it would make sense from a business standpoint for them to increase the price of the license.

To be honest I think it was Halloween that saved DBD. It brought in a lot of new players to the game, and it would definitely be sad if we lost that chapter.

I think it was definitely a Netflix issue, however I don't see the series lasting much longer beyond season 4. They've pretty much told the story they want to tell, so I could definitely see the price for the license dropping in the near future.

SMITE recently took on the Stranger Things licensing.

If I had to guess, Netflix was probably asking for BHVR to fork over more money than they could afford to. Simple greed. As a result they pulled the license to sell the content.

Demo's perks and Nancy/Steve's perks may still appear on the Shrine in case you ever wanted to run.... Cruel Limits... for some reason.

So I'm not too worried about the rest of the killer licenses. Don't think any of them have a reason to pull.

It is a worry and means newer players won't have access to these survivors or killers from the chapter.

Guess we'll be seeing less demigorgons in the future.

I thought their perks will become common. Like Bill's teachable perks was common on consoles when he wasn't there as a playable charachter.

It's kind of unfair to have their perks available only by random for newer players.

If it is expensive to keep renewing all the licensed content, eventually another one will go. The fact these deals need renewing mean one side can back out, so buy licensed content on the assumption that it won't be in the game forever.

That's an aspect to this that I don't see enough people talking about (and I'm equally to blame). I understand that this can't be helped but it's not just that we're all losing a map, it's also that any new players who want to join this game from the end of the year onward will apparently never have the option to get characters that other players have. That really sucks. As a Silent Hill fan I know how I'd feel if I got the game this year only to find out that everyone but me was able to play as Pyramid Head.

You would think that BHVR would incorporate a contract that would secure them the rights to the character/s for the foreseeable future instead of having to constantly renew the license. If that's the case, then yeah any chapter could end up leaving DBD in the foreseeable future.

No company would agree to that, everyone thinks of money and the future of the franchise. Netflix had a reason to pull the license away weather for greed or future ambitions with stranger things.

You'd think it'd make more sense to come to a deal where they keep the stranger things chapter since it's publicity for the series.

They actually decided to pull the trigger on an IP with a 2 year contract... I have every reason to worry they made similar decisions with other licenses. They apparently screwed up the map too? I mean, my concern means very little, but I expect we will lose more content in the future.

Netflix IS getting more into games right now, so maybe they wanted to make their own game where you play as the demogorgon.

    I'm nervous about it too.

People keep acting like Behavior is in the right here, but we don't know that for sure. Netflix has been known to shoot things down despite any reasoning to the contrary, but Behavior has also shown their ass pretty often too. It's just as easy to believe either side dropped the ball on this one and screwed things up.

Yes, it can happen with any license. Hell, it can even happen with original chapters. This is all in the EULA. However, I wouldn't worry about it when it comes to older licenses or original chapters.

Owners of new licenses usually think they're the next big thing, so they're going to be arrogant and try to get unreasonable deals. Owners of old licenses usually understand they've peaked decades ago, so they're going to be more humble.

No need to worry about Halloween. They just recently renewed the license. Mikey and Laurie are safe for the foreseeable future.

Care to explain what you mean by them messing up the Map? First I've heard of such a thing for designing a Liscensed Map.

Not to mention they just Incorporated legendary skins just a few months ago! They also did a public gaming stream with the cast not that long ago either, so this all coming to an abrupt end is very odd indeed.

  • SweetTerror
    SweetTerror Member Posts: 2,695

What's interesting here though is that they don't mention how long the licensing deal was extended for. What's sad is that even incorporating new skins doesn't guarantee that the license will be around for long. Case in point, stranger things. They just Incorporated a legendary skin only a few months ago and yet BHVR is losing everything in November.

Makes you wonder what will become of the game when BHVR no longer wants to continue renewing licenses. Dead by Daylight is going to be a shadow of its former self when that day comes.

    Regarding your last sentence:

    1) Halloween was the first license to come into the game, back when it was very primitive and NOT popular. The IP owner likes DBD and considering the recent renewal of the license we can say this license will stay for A LONG time

    2) For Bubba, it was literally the TCM IP owner that reached out to BHVR because they liked DBD so much. Also very unlikely it'll go, not to mention it is a paragraph so we won't lose any content.

    3) NoES license is the strictest, but considering the IP owner agreed to partner with BHVR back in DbD's earlier stages, it's still not that likely that chapter's gonna go.

    4) As far as I know, the people from SAW are very nice to BHVR, and don't forget about DBD's recent SAW event.

    5) No clue about Evild Dead. Although I can safely say we're fine, it's a paragraph, so nothing's lost

    6) Fun World is probably the most "lol whatever" IP owner

    7) Stranger Things

    8) Konami's strict, but the license is still new

    9) Capcom's done plenty crossovers as far as I know, so it's very unlikely RE will go any time soon (License's still very new too)

    10) Hellraiser is a very old license, so it's also very likely its owners have no issue with their characters shining again.

Hopefully I haven't forgotten any license. I imagined the game since May 15th 2016 when I found out about it to remember its licenses. Also, only one license in 2018? Pretty weird, I thought there were more.
