Was I dead to rights from the beginning?

Hi there. I'm a PS4 player, and (so far at least) a survivor main. I'd like to get The Spirit before I try out Killer just because I like her lore, but 9k shards is a lot. I haven't been playing long yet; I've got one survivor to 40, and my account level is 23. I won't bother mentioning my rank as I think at the point I'm at, it really means essentially nothing.

I just finished a game however, vs. The Hillbilly. I went in and as soon as I heard his chainsaw, I knew that he'd be pretty quick and I'd have to play carefully. I got hooked once early on, but then his focus seemed to drop from me, as he hooked another teammate twice, and downed them a third time. They disconnected before being picked up. The two remaining survivors were each sacrificed. The final one signaled that he was being camped, then procedeed to try and struggle out, and then let himself die. I was left the last one alive, and I noticed that the killer was spending a long time hanging around a single spot. I figured it was the hatch, so I decided to work on a generator on the opposite side of the map.

It was the final generator needed to power the exit gates thankfully, but as I went for a gate, I noticed something. The hatch, and both exit gates, had spawned in such a way that The Hillbilly could walk just a couple steps towards either gate, and see if I was opening it. He could also cover the hatch at the same time. I knew I wouldn't be able to get through either of the exit gates because of how they were placed, even if I had switched from one to the other until I eventually got one open. This killer was on top of his game and never stood still until I was near, and to be honest I got very close to the hatch without him noticing.

So, I went for it. I've never gone through the hatch with the killer nearby, unfortunately, and I was entirely unaware that you could be grabbed while going through it, but I didn't immediately try to jump into it. I figured he'd just hit me in the animation and it'd be interrupted. He knew the game we were playing, and since I'm working on Feng Min, I don't have any particularly strong perks. Lithe and Alert, both at level 1. I vaulted through a window near to the hatch while he was away from it, and with the speedboost from Lithe I ran straight to it, and jumped down. My head was the only thing showing when he grabbed me, and placed me on a hook right next to the hatch. Wouldn't have mattered if he didn't, as he also had Iron Grip.

Now, we come to the question. Could I have played that better, or was the RNG very heavily in favour of the killer that had already taken a massive advantage? I felt very cheated to have worked as hard as I did, and make surprisingly correct assumptions - my heart sure was pumping a ton of blood too - only to have a fleeting victory quite literally ripped from my grasp. I made only about 14k BP from that match, which for a level 7 character is fine, but.. I honestly felt like I played well to keep myself out of the killer's attention for a long enough time to work on generators until I was the last one alive, and I thought I played it -really- well to use the advantage of my perk to try and get out alive.

I've read around and heard that the game is currently massively in favour of the killer, and while I lose most of my games I usually attributed that to the fact that I'm much better at not getting into a chase than I am at escaping them, so I'd generally die because of my own lack of skill if I was discovered, which is fine. But after that I do genuinely feel like everything down to the RNG was in the killer's favour. Correct me if I'm wrong, and I'd be more than happy to hear about different ways I could've played the match!

I feel like you did everything right except that you tried to jump into the hatch that way. You should have stood on it until he hit you, then went in during the blade wipe.

I wouldn't say the game is biased towards killers, rather the game was biased to the player of the killer having more experience. At least in this case.

There are lots of times when the gates are at the far ends of the map, or I stumbled across a freshly opening hatch that seemed to want to appear right next to me.

Mmm. That's fair. I didn't actually think about the blade wipe. At all. Probably something I would've thought about if I played a killer at all! But like I said in my original post, I'm waiting to get The Spirit for that. But hey, thanks for the advice, that's actually really helpful.

One bit of advice is basically always use the blade wipe to your advantage if it comes down to it.
Also take advantage of the time between killer attacks in general.
Even if they miss they need time to hit again unless they have perks, or powers that allow for otherwise.

If a killer is camping a survivor,  take a hit,  or make them swing at you, and unhook during the blade wipe, or their missed strike animation.

Little things like that will help.

The spirit is a pretty amazing killer.
I would invest in some earphones, though. When using her power you can only see the scratches and hear the sounds of survivors, so listening for survivors becomes even more important.

Yeah I've got some pretty solid headphones that I use already while I'm playing, so I've got that covered pretty nicely thankfully! But yeah I don't honestly play to the weaknesses of killers nearly enough, but it's definitely something I need to start doing.

Once again, thank you very kindly for the advice, it's greatly appreciated, considering I've just been stumbling about figuring little things out here and there. Knowing these sorts of things will be nice, if I manage to remember them!

I have fun with spirit. She's not my favorite but that's opinion. If played well she is very strong.

Many folks depend on sound with her (I do too), but the sound effects got borked last patch. Developers acknowledged it and said they are working on a fix but right now, double sound cues are VERY hard to hear amongst the ambient sounds and chase music.

Sound cues are VERY bad right now until they fix it...but it probably won't be a while with the holidays.

If you love spirit, get her since she is fun. She is VERY hard to master and even harder right now with sound borked.

Ah well that's good to know. I have felt often times that I'd like to turn down sound effects to be able to hear more important audio cues, since the game seems to rely on quite a few that easily get drowned out by the sound of a generator being repaired, for example.

I assume the inability to fiddle with more precise audio levels is for the sake of balance above all else though. If someone wanted to hear the music over the sound effects then they'd be at a disadvantage to someone who wanted sound effects over music. But I do feel that they could perhaps make the audio cues a higher priority, as they are sometimes hard to pick out. I don't think I -ever- heard an audio cue for level 1 Premonition. Might be by design, that one..

But yeah, The Spirit strikes me as a simple killer on the surface but capable of quite a lot if you're able to use her power well. Easy to play, but immensely difficult to master. I guess that's why the odd time I'm up against a good Spirit player, or at least relatively speaking, it seems like I just can't get away from her even if everything goes in my favour. Most killers don't seem to pay attention to sound honestly. The ones that do are very.. omnipresent, it almost feels like.
