Aren't all perks, items and add ons essentially crutches?

I see arguments on both sides that certain perks or add ons are "crutches" because their opponent bad at the game. When you think about it, aren't perks and add ons supposed to help/empower their user to make the game easier for them?

I guess when someone loses, they'd rather blame something else than themselves. Even if the opponent was running no perks or add ons they'd complain about something.

Some are definitely not made equal.

I wouldn’t say all those things are crutches by default. My thoughts on crutches (in games in general) are the effect a game so substantially that without them players who use them would perform significantly worse. Usually the positive effect they grant are so great that a player who isn’t that skilled can have a much larger impact in the game they are playing.

I don’t want to go into specific perks I feel are under that definition, but perks/items do not all have the same impact on a trial. Take for example, sole survivor compared to dead hard, or a ranger med kit compared to a green key.

No. If you can't play without something, it's a crutch. If you can, then it's not.

This is how I see it as well. Ruin? It is the strongest perk in the game, but I do not "need" it. Lightborn doesn't really have that many supporters, but I literally refuse to play without it. Definitely my crutch.

    No

There is a difference between using something and relying on something. If you cannot play the game without one specific perk, and refuse to ever not accommodate it in your build, because you rely on that perk, then it is a crutch.

The reason NOED, Ruin, Dead Hard, Adrenaline, etc are all commonly called crutches are because they are commonly seen perks. Any perk, however, can be a crutch
