Darkness Among Us, The Game Mode
New Gamemode: The Darkness Among Us
A brand new game mode introduced in the patch, The Darkness Among Us pits 10 Survivors together, with 2 of them being part of The Legion, disguised as Survivors in order to sabotage their attempts at escape.
This game mode, as you probably can tell from the title, plays very similarly to the Among Us video game.
Survivor Side
- In this game mode, Survivors have objectives to complete, which include opening chests, cleansing totems, opening lockers and more, all of which takes a substantial amount of time.
- In addition to these objectives, new objectives called "Glyphs" will be scattered across the map, each with varying degrees of time and activity involved.
- Completing objectives will fill up a progress meter on the bottom left side of everyone's screens, which can be used to tell whether or not things are going well for the Survivors or not.
- Survivors have use to any Perk and Item that can help them gain an edge in these objectives. However, Survivors cannot use certain Perks and items that reveal Auras.
- Exhaustion Perks such as Dead Hard, Sprint Burst and Lithe also have a cooldown instead of the Exhaustion cooldown.
Legion Side
- In this game mode, The Legion are the killers. They need to sabotage every objective in the Survivors' path discreetly and quietly, while disguising themselves as Survivors as well.
- The Legion have multiple abilities while in this gamemode: Kill, Sabotage, Entity's Call, Locker Warp and Diversion.
- Kill is an ability that The Legion can use to quickly turn into themselves and kill a nearby Survivor via stabbing.
- Upon activating Kill, The Legion goes into Feral Frenzy mode, which grants them a boost of speed but reveals they are The Legion, thus starting a chase.
- Upon using Kill, The Legion's disguise is taken off and they reveal themselves for the duration of the Kill, which takes 3 seconds to completely finish.
- Upon using Kill, a 180 second cooldown timer begins before you can use it again.
- Upon finishing the kill, The Legion will revert to the survivor they originally looked like.
- The body of the dead Survivor will then be left in that area for someone else to find or The Legion to report.
- Sabotage is an action that The Legion can use to quickly regress the amount of progress of many of the objectives of the Survivors and make it a necessity to get them completed or Survivors lose.
- Sabotaging Generators acts like it does in the games, with the Generators eventually regressing to 0 if not stopped.
- Sabotaging Totems will cause the auras of all Survivors to be revealed to you for 10 seconds, and will silence the Survivor who cleansed them for 60 seconds after cleansing. Killer Instinct will also trigger on this Survivor.
- Sabotaging Glyphs will cause them to erupt and displace elsewhere that a Survivor needs to find them.
- Sabotaging any of these three objectives will cause The Entity to stir, and if one of these objectives is not completed within the next 120 seconds, then one Survivor's life will be taken at random.
- This Entity sabotage has a cooldown of 240 seconds.
- Entity's Call is a special action that allows The Legion to see the aura of Survivors for 4 seconds.
- Locker Warp is a special ability that allows The Legion to warp from one locker to the next locker of their choice. This could backfire, if one or more Survivors are near said Locker, as you will always fast vault out of it.
- Diversion is a special ability that causes a mimic version of The Legion (controlled by AI) to quickly start chasing Survivors for roughly 30 seconds before disappearing.
- This is great for splitting Survivors up, since they won't know if The Legion is real or not, as The Legion will try to mimic real peoples' movements by remaining unpredictable in how they move in their directions.
- This can also be used while you are doing "actions" with other Survivors, just so you can make it seem like you're one of them, as this mimic Legion will only pop up from an area out of the line of sight of the other Survivors.
Both Sides
- Both sides have the ability to "call a meeting", which brings everyone to Main Building and allows them to discuss who to force on the hook together and kill.
- This action can only be performed once every 30 seconds by anyone.
- Survivors who are being chased by The Legion cannot use this ability. They cannot use it for 5 seconds after losing chase with them, either.
- Both sides will all have their own names tied to them and will have their faces displayed on the screen at all times; any Survivor killed will have their heads grayed out.
- All names will be displayed on the top of everyone's heads when a meeting is called, just to avoid any confusion.
- There are multiple various weapons that can be found within the trial, each with their own unique effects that can defend Survivors from The Legion, or have The Legion use to amplify their abilities.
- The Beartraps (Trapper) grant the ability to capture a Survivor or The Legion in a trap until they undo the trap themselves or have another person do it for them.
- The Hammer (Hillbilly) grants the ability to stun a Survivor or The Legion for 5 seconds.
- The Stick (Doctor) grants the ability to electrify a Survivor or The Legion, inducing the Madness status effect per strike, which can only be removed by snapping out of it.
- The Hunting Hatchets (Huntress) grants the ability to throw a weapon at a Survivor or The Legion, which will Injure them like normal or even put them into the Dying State. They can be found in random Lockers.
- The Great Knife (The Executioner) grants the ability to kill any of the random players as Survivor, but dramatically reduces movement speed by 80%, and the attack speed is abysmal.
- The Polished Head-Smasher (The Trickster) grants the ability to quickly deflect a Kill by The Legion, but can only be done once every 60 seconds.
- Both sides have a "Dying State", which if not tended to after 120 seconds, the Survivor or Legion player will bleed out. If a Survivor player is in the Dying State, The Legion can perform a fast version of their original Mori.
The Killers-Turned-Survivor?!
- In addition to the base roster of Survivors that you can play the game mode with, certain other Killers are actually capable of participating in this game mode, too, just so they aren't left out.
- However, these versions of the Killers are the non-Killer versions of themselves from previous years. These include, but won't be limited to the following roster.
- Evan MacMillan
- Sally Smithson
- Rin Yamaoka
- Susie
- Joey
- Ji-Woon Hak
- These versions are technically considered alternate universe versions of them and can be killed like other Survivors can.
Considering that there's a lack of uniqueness in Dead by Daylight, and there's already a perfect recipe for a deception-based game mode, I think that this would fit right in with Dead by Daylight.
The game needs some sort of variety, and despite the Among Us memes that will certainly pop up in the wake of this, I think that this would liven up the game quite a bit while still retaining the identity of Dead by Daylight.
