Chapter??- Curse of Chaos

KILLER: The Pharaoh

KILLER LORE/BACKGROUND:

Lord Sethemshut was born to one of the most high and powerful families in Egypt. Always living in the lap of luxury, Sethemshut had the world at his fingertips- fresh fruits and meats whenever he desired, crowds of worshipping peasants groveling on the ground he walked on and slaves who lived and died for his every whim. Nearly nothing was not available to him, which made that which he did not have more valuable than anything. What he coveted most was the crown of Egypt- to rule and become the god-king of the desert where he rightfully belonged.

At first he attempted the usual manner- wooing the Pharaoh’s daughters and soon wedding one. Everyone knew the Pharaoh’s inability to produce sons and heirs was a curse from the gods, one that signified the end of an era and the beginning of the next. Sethemshut’s wedding night was glorious as he sealed his rightful place in history, but he would soon discover that not to be the case. In a fit of madness, a court priest received a message from the gods, that the Pharaoh had produced a worthy heir- Sethumshut’s wife, Sobeknefru. With even the gods proclaiming her the rightful ruler of Egypt, he could do nothing as the crown slipped from his hands to hers, leaving him merely a figurehead of the household while she ruled over Egypt. The thought made his blood boil, but patience! Kings were not made in a day.

As they became the royal family and lived for years in happiness, Setshemshut studied with scribes in the House of Life, an educational center for the rich and powerful. He learned many rites and rituals, soon becoming a priest and master of the craft which helped cement Sobeknefru’s rule by divine right. Unknown to all however, by night he would pray to the dark gods- Set, god of chaos and Apophis, the Snake of Evil and Harbinger of Doomsday. If the gods themselves had abandoned him, he would call upon their enemies to give him the crown he so rightfully was due. For over seven years he prayed by night and studied magic, becoming one of the most proficient sorcerers in Egypt when finally, during a cold night that nearly brought death to the desert, a voice answered his prayers.

It began quietly- whispering incomprehensible things in the dead of night, from the darkest of shadows. The more he listened, the louder and more clear the voices became- they spoke to him of hidden secrets and buried treasures, of dark magics and the art of chaos. To any other priest the voice of Apophis would turn them mad, but Sethemshut was already mad from his thirst for power. He used the knowledge gained from the voices to stage many tragic accidents and betrayals over his wife’s reign. A collapsed dam that ruined an entire season’s worth of crops, hundreds of cows and animals dying from an unknown plague, a conspiracy to dethrone several lords and ladies under the Pharaoh and a month of blackened skies had terrorized the land and put the hearts and minds of Egyptians against their ruler. In a desperate attempt Sobeknefru tried to calm the masses with a speech, but she was struck down by a lightning bolt from above and instantly killed. As the crowd screamed and ran rampant, Sethumshut stepped up to relax them, hiding a smoking scepter below the balcony.

Soon after his ascension to the throne the weather cleared and prosperous signs appeared all across the land. People believed that the worst of things were at an end, as did Sethumshut on his throne, when once again a priest was struck with visions. This time, the young child Sobeknefru had birthed with her husband was to be king, while Sethumshut was cast aside again as a mere advisor. With a reign lasting less than a month, this final insult from the gods sent Sethumshut into true madness, taking both dagger and scepter and going on a killing spree of the entire palace. Priests were turned to dust, guards covered in locusts and servants eaten alive by beetles as Sethumshut stormed through the halls. Finding his children cowering in his bedroom, he took the dagger and slew them all, painting the floor and walls as red as the chaos he so desired. Lightning crackled and fog swirled around the temple as these events transpired, causing the entire city to crumble and collapse into the sands lost to time.

Thousands of years later, no trace of the city remains save for a large section of red desert and desolate silence all throughout. Nothing lives within, with only death awaiting those brave enough to venture into its evil lands.

STATS: Tall, 24m Terror Radius, 4.2m/s;110%

WEAPON: Obsidian Khopesh (A shining khopesh, black as the night sky, a symbol of power and wealth among the elite of Egypt.)

MORI: The Pharaoh calls upon the spirit of Apophis as the sky turns red above him and the Survivor. From the ground, red snake tendrils burst out and coil around the Survivor, squeezing the life out of them. The Pharaoh presses his staff against the Survivor’s forehead and red light flashes, blinding them both and any Survivors nearby. When it fades, the Survivor is turned into a pile of dust, then the Pharaoh returns to normal.

KILLER OVERVIEW: The Pharaoh is an ancient Killer, able to Doom Survivors with his power Curse of Apophis leading to their inevitable deaths. His personal perks Set For Destruction, Scourge Hook: Scales of Fate and Hex: Sea Of Chaos allow him to prepare for the endtimes, hasten the sacrifice and truly embrace the nature of disorder.

POWER: Curse of Apophis

The Pharaoh’s curse can be transferred onto the Survivors so they can share in his pain. The more Survivors that are cursed, the more powerful the Pharaoh becomes.

  • Special Ability: Ensnare- The Pharaoh can Ensnare a Survivor in bandages and pull them in for a basic attack. Press the Active Ability button while targeting a Survivor in range to Ensnare them (12m range). Has a 40s cooldown (20s for 3 or more Doomed Survivors). Requires at least 1 Survivor to be Doomed to use.
    • Ensnared Survivors can perform the Tear action (3s) to attempt to escape from their Ensnarement. If hit by the Pharaoh, Survivors automatically are freed. Automatically freed if the Survivor loses line of sight with the Pharaoh.
  • Special Ability: Voyage- The Pharaoh can enter a Locker and target another Locker to instantly travel to it, after which it enters a long cooldown. While in a Locker, the Pharaoh has no Terror Radius but must Voyage to a Locker within 8s or be forced out and have the ability go on cooldown. (60s, 30s for 4 Doomed Survivors). Requires at least 2 Survivors to be Doomed to use. Hold the Active Ability button for 1s while in a Locker and targeting another Locker to Voyage to it. Cannot use Voyage on a Locker with a Survivor inside of it.
  • Special Ability: Serpent’s Strike- The Pharaoh can charge a blast of red energy to attack a Survivor in range (1.5s, 16m). This blast afflicts the Doomed Status Effect. Hold the Secondary Attack Button to charge the Serpent's Strike and release it to use it. Press the Attack button to cancel it.
    • New Status Effect: Doomed- Doomed Survivors will be put into the Dying State, regardless of their Health State or what they are doing, if they do not Exorcise themselves with an Idol of Ra within 120s. Idols are hidden among the map at locations where Totems can spawn. 5 Idols spawn per Trial and require an 8s Exorcise action to remove Doomed. Once used, an Idol collapses into red sand before reforming 120s in another location. Survivors in chase have their Doomed effect time slowed while in chase (50%) and paused when Exorcising, in the Dying State or hooked.
    • If another location is not available, the Idol will respawn at the location where a second Idol is used immediately after.

  • Hom-Dai Hieroglyph: Survivors hit by Serpent’s Strike suffer from the Deep Wound status effect if they are already injured. (A hieroglyph that induces an evil curse upon the victim, one that will waste away at their body until they become a living corpse.)
  • Book of the Dead: Survivors who finish the Exorcise action have their location revealed by Killer Instinct for 6s. (The Book of the Dead, a series of instructions and guides on how to help the spirit navigate throughout the Underworld. Also includes useful information on demons and how to defeat them should they attempt to rebel.)
  • Snake’s Head: Decrease the amount of Idols of Ra by 2. Does not stack. (The head of a red snake claimed after it snuck into your bedroom on your wedding night. While your bride claimed it as a curse, you secretly saw it as an omen of your future- for better or worse.)

+Red/Ultra Rare

  • Isfet Hieroglyph: Serpent’s Strike can now injure and down Survivors. Considerably increase the charging time of Serpent’s Strike. (The forbidden hieroglyph, the embodiment of Chaos and the means to summon the Devourer of Worlds. It pulses red and black wherever it is seen.)

SURVIVOR: Mei Zhang

SURVIVOR LORE/BACKGROUND:

She had a world of possibilities open to her; However, she saw her passion not in the riches and future she was assured but in the streets where others went about their day. Unlike her, they suffered from a lack of money and resources- cold, hungry, no place to call home or even rest in. Mei could not forget the faces of sorrow she passed every day on her way to school, nor the hardships of life that she witnessed in the car or on the bus going about her daily life.

Despite the urgent request of her parents, she strived to go out of her way to help others whenever and wherever she could. Eventually they reached a compromise where she could focus on a career that was both successful and helpful to others- medicine. Except Mei chose an unusual path for studying, enrolling in a migrant education path where she could travel the world, both practicing medicine and helping others. She spent many years traveling between different third world countries such as Nigeria, Guatemala, India, Mexico, Ukraine and Chile, in addition to anywhere a natural disaster occured. Her home was where ever disaster struck, because it was there where people needed her most, where she could give her life meaning.

After the Suez Canal became flooded due to a partial collapse of the dam, she traveled to Egypt with her organization. After a few weeks aiding displaced survivors and distributing supplies, a snake snuck into the tent and scared most people outside. Mei grabbed a broom and tried pushing the snake away into a corner as others exited, leaving only her and the snake left. After several minutes when someone went back in to check on her, she was missing, the broom in the sand the only sign left of her.

This was really cool to make, not a true mummy concept but an Egyptian warrior-priest who wanted to succeed to the throne and was willing to do anything for it. As always, let me know if you guys have any feedback!

I think the amount of effort you put into these actually scares some people away lmao, because they have to read a bunch.

You're a machine, dude. Huge props.

Some of the perks could be easily exploited though, namely The Pharaoh's Scourge Hook perk and the Boon Totem perk from Mei Zhang.

Scourge Hook: Scales of Fate could be devastating against camping killers.

Boon: Blessed Martyr may be too strong, not simply for the aura reading, but because you'll get a whopping 30% vault speed when paired with Resilience and Spine Chill. You wouldn't be caught unless you made a big mistake during looping.

Overall though, another incredible concept chapter.

Must be, a lot of people don't really scroll down once they see the lore building, but I think its one of the most important parts as a Killer is more than a power- its a lot cooler to have someone to empathize/associate with with an amazing character.

I edited the Scourge Hook to address camping so the Killer has to be away to use the effect, hopefully that makes it more useful. As for the Boon, I want them to be strong because they're supposed to be equal to Hexes like Ruin or Devour Hope, so I'm tossing a couple ideas out there. The vault speed is specifically to help with getting chased all the time, but even if there's a build around it it'd be niche (I think) like builds to max/min healing speeds or block Generators all the time.

Thanks again for taking the time to read it through!

EDIT: Reworked Mei's Boon perk to be inline with 5.3.0 PTB Boon Totem mechanics.
