Do you think VHS will top DBD?
Personally I think DBD will remain on top. Though VHS based on early looks will not die off. Unlike the billion other false prophets. And give competition.Reasons are simple DBD is established been around longer they know the formula that continuously works and the classic what other game can you be Nemesis chasing Bill, Ash, Laurie, Quentin through Midwich. And it seems the devs recognize this I mean suddenly the moment a contender who appears viable arrives two ancient community request Trapper Buffs and Spirit nerfs arrive and many more changes in only a part 1 for normally small Mod-Chapters. But, if VHS can at least stay alive it’ll be a nice alternative

It is way too early to tell one way or the other.

100% no.

I don't know. I saw that dollmaker gameplay, and that teleport + dolls gave me an Evolve Wraith flashback where you're chasing down this person who doesn't even want to make plays. like, it was just her spamming decoy and running, decoy, running, decoy etc... just doing chip damage and dragging the game out as long as possible till they either lose because of the 20 min hard cap or they finally commit.
Other than that, I'm pretty excited to see it, but IMO, it seems really different from DBD.
1 -
no. HSH:S is basically dead.
and the only thing that has come close to dbd is a 4v1 gacha game that is extremely survivor sided that basically forces you to camp. and the community themselves think camping is necessary.
killers if u think dbd is survivor sided. look at identity v.
1 -
I think it has potential to be up there, but it just needs time.
I don't think it will top DBD tho.

DBD is like WoW. Nothing will beat it or top it. WoW is in a terrible state atm, but it still has the most players out of every MMO on the market. VHS will probably do fairly well if it's a good game, but DBD will always be the top asym game.
4 -
vhs was made obsolete by dvd decades ago, its kinda irrelevant now.

Nope they are too different in many ways.
1 for example. VHS is cheesy 80s horror. DBD is all kinds of horror.
2 -
Unless VHS comes out with an established player-base and a few exciting licenses... No.
Hopefully it'll provide some sort of competition, even if the two are complete different games.
1 -
Nothing will top dbd unless a big gaming studio enters the market and can get enough licenses to compete. They'd have to go after Chucky, Aliens, Leprechaun, Jason, and whatever else Behaviour hasn't gotten. Would be nice if it happened, it would stop Behaviour from sitting on their hands.
3 -
Nope, with what we already know there is not a chance it will top DbD.
hopefully it manages to coexist though. I am not that interested anymore after seeing/learning more about survivor gameplay (those weapons seem way too absurd). But some kind of competition in the asymm horror genre would be nice.
4 -
I doubt it, however I'm going to support it as much as possible, it's pretty much up to us whether or not we want dbd to actually have competition, and therefore a reason for them to actually try and impress us with each update.
0 -
Absolutely not.
But with any luck, it'll be a kick in the ass for DbD.
7 -
LOL. Oh you're serious? No.
1 -
No console? No shot. Not even worth vaguely considering. It will take away from DBD's playerbase for less than a month and then die.
6 -
If they release it on console then yeah possibly the issue with new 4v1 games is that they never have console ports
1 -
That game lets you murder the Killer, I can only imagine how hellish the balancing will be.
DBD does one thing right, it feels like a proper cat and mouse game. Now give the mouse a gun, doesn't seem very appetizing imo.
Also the trailer was awful, like someone vomited it together in an hour.
1 -
To be fair not every game has to follow the dbd format where the survivors can't be offensive
0 -
Well since it doesn't have that aspect that makes dbd well dbd probably not but it might be decent competition
0 -
plus i heard it has voice comms. no thanks.
and you can fight back . I don't really like that.
1 -
It won't top DBD, but it might have a chance to rival it, and saying "might" is incredibly generous. Don't get me wrong, I'm very excited for VHS, I've already signed up for the open beta, but with all the licenses DBD has gotten, DBD has simply become the king of the genre.
1 -
I have my doubts that it'll top DBD, but with any luck, it seems like it might be end up being good competition.
For starters, it's free-to-play and it seems the devs want to balance the game around survivors being able to communicate with each other.
Only time will tell, I suppose.

I want to see what the game will look like when the sweatiest players will have broken the meta of this game down to its bones. The fact that the goal of the kids is to kill the monster make this a compleltly different kind of game beyond the superficial 4vs1.
1 -
Yeah, this is it. I feel that the whole cartoony fun will vanish as soon as few people figure out how to minmax everything.
I will say one thing though, I do like how the Killer gets stronger when he hits Survivors multiple times without a down, eventually making them exposed for the next hit.
0 -
If DBD continues in its current path, it'll at least be comparable in success. People underestimate what a F2P game can do to an established franchise.
0 -
I don't think VHS will be able to top DBD, but as others have said, I also don't think VHS will die. I think they're more likely to coincide like Identity V and DBD do. Where they target different audiences for a different experience even if they're similar in ways.
1 -
If the devs put serious work in this game, and continue to do so after the games release, then maybe yes.
I would surely hope so.
0 -
I doubt it.
I will give it a shot, because it is free to play, but the fact that the survivors can kill the killer in that game is already a bad start, imo.
0 -
Not unless it comes with licensed characters.
Or is somehow beyond fun like we’re never seen before and well polished.
0 -
It's kind of annoying how people always have to overhype every new game to be "the DBD killer".
Anyway, there's a lot of battle pass buyers in this forum, so their answer is gonna be no whatever the case
2 -
If I wasn't so ######### over all the day glo 80s nostalgia crap I'd be more interested in VHS since it seems more balanced and not a bully sim like the trailer makes it seem. I'm with Scott Jund's video on it, they're different gameplay styles, nobody has really played it yet, and the thread that connects all the asym games that died has been survivors fight back Wich turns off a lot of DbD killer players.
0 -
No i don't think so.
Vhs looks like a incredibilly fun party game with friends
But a 4v1 where the 4 can actually fight back will almost always just turn into a bully simulator against randoms.
Still hope it will do well though. Seems like a really fun partygame for 5 people

Nothing similar will top dbd anytime soon. F13 had potential but lawsuit ruined it. And comms/teamming.
0 -
Its a different style of game. Just because its 4v1 doesnt really mean its a competitor.
Its also still looks very, very rough around the edges.
1 -
no, nothing will top DBD unless a literal DBD clone comes out.
for one, dbd has way too many licenses for anything to top it anytime soon.
and 2, VHS and DBD play incredibly differently. the only things they have in common is that they’re both 4v1 Asymmetrical games
1 -
No. My opinion:
As frustrating as DBD can be sometimes, VHS is not going to surpass it in terms player base and widespread recognition. I think it will become another inferior alternative like Last Year, Home Sweet Home and Resident Evil Resistance. The online Predator and Alien games are in the same boat too.
I will check out VHS as a horror fun and hope it does well, but I believe DBD is too far established with it's big licences and dedicated community to be knocked off the road.
The only game which is partially similar that I can see making somewhat of an impact is the Evil Dead game.
Friday 13th, a game I personally always preferred, is the only title that is at the same level as DBD.
2 -
It looks like the killer gets stunned throughout the match as much as the survivors do, which means that the killer side is going to be underpowered and not enjoyable. Just like this game.
1 -
I watched some gameplay of VHS days ago. It feels super cluncky and orthopedic (no offense).
0 -
I hope VHS beyond DBD, because developer will pay attention to balance and optimization it game
not launch a new modeling everyday.
0 -
Oh look, it's this thread again.
"Do you think Friday the 13th will kill off DBD?"
"Do you think Deathgarden will kill off DBD?"
"Do you think Last Year will kill off DBD?"
"Do you think Hide or Die will kill off DBD?"
DBD has set itself up in a position where I think it's fairly safe to say nothing will ever beat it on its own turf. They have so many horror icons that anyone who cares for the horror side of it is drawn to DBD over anything else.
It's important to realise that any game trying to make an "asymmetrical killer vs survivor" game has a very specific audience. You know where that audience is? Almost exclusively playing DBD. In order for them to get a regular playerbase they have to do something absolutely groundbreaking that pulls a huge amount of people away from DBD for a significant amount of time.
First off, they simply don't have the attention. Betas are releasing soon and their videos only have a couple of thousand views.
Secondly, they don't have wiggle room to sort out what players don't like. Look at Deathgarden, people didn't like progression or the gameplay loop a tonne, they just left. They tried to do a full relaunch and people left even faster. DBD has flaws but people have invested enough that balance changes can be a long way off and people are happy. A new game comes out with issues and you don't have that same investment to stick around while it improves.
Speaking of investment, people have thousands of hours in DBD. Even if something annoys them they still feel loyalty and like their work would be wasted to just drop it.
In terms of attention people who play DBD want to watch DBD. Even if streamers try out VHS they stand to lose a tonne of views after a couple of games if the viewers aren't gripped.
Lastly, I just think the gameplay looks flat out worse. Killers in DBD hate how much of a bully simulator it is sometimes, yet the entire gameplay loop of VHS appears to be survivors building weapons to bully the killer. The maps look ENORMOUS and for most of the time, there's no hint where anyone could be. The chases look very unsatisfying for both sides, the killer catches up fast and gets easy hits, but then are forced to awkwardly look up and with no form of scratch marks are essentially meant to lose the survivor most of the time.
I watched the deep dive on Dollmaker and while the power looks super cool and I'd love to see it in DBD, it looks so ######### and frustrating to play against. You search a truly massive map for a killer who's hiding and knows you're coming, but he's constantly on top of you with dolls that don't really benefit you to kill. When threatened at any point he can instantly be across the entire map and safe and just continue. That looks so rough for survivors, what're you gonna do, just spread out and hope one of you is near where he chooses to go to (despite him having warnings if you're where he's gonna teleport to) and then just get picked off?
It has some interesting concepts, but seriously, if anyone remembers it a year after launch they'll be lucky.

I will say one thing: if F13 still had regular content being released, I would of shelved DBD a long time ago.
0 -
From what I saw you can't loop and drop something like pallets? That's the core concept of DbD. Therefore it's kinda a completely different game
0 -
No.
0 -
I will say something else: F13th lost 60% of its playerbase within two months and never surpassed DbD at its lowest.
0 -
Be that as it may, F13 will always have a special place in my heart. Bugs and all.
0 -
All valid points here, and I agree with much of what you said.
However,
As seen in recent history, a game does not need to beat its competitors in the same format in order to steal its audience.
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds stole CS:GO & Call of Duty's audience in 2017 until having its own player base stolen by Fortnite the following year. CS:GO's player base was cut in half in 2017 from its 800,000 average players until it went free-to-play at the end of 2018. Call of Duty tried to punch back with Blackout, but quickly realized upon release that it couldn't compete with its competitors in a pay-to-play model. It wasn't until Warzone came out in early 2020 that Call of Duty was even able to maintain a dog in the fight for battle royale games.
Moral of the story... Battle Royale stole the show from two games of completely different formats, and Fortnite showed us how far free-to-play (and crossplay) can go for a game.
VHS is in the same game genre as DBD, and therefore is wholely capable of giving it a run for its money.

It's unlikely, but it is a brand new title so will undoubtably be rough, unpolished and full of learning curves.
Personally, I'm not a fan of the art style and that one scene of survivors hp-thrusting and meme-ing put me off as to what we could potentially see. That doesn't mean it will a failure though, so I'll reserve judgement.
Ultimately, DBD has too big an advantage on many fronts, so no. But it'll be interesting to see if VHS evolves into a worthwhile title.
0 -
Maybe for really young kids itd be a phase? Kids would like the idea of flying an electric umbrella but no, wont be a competition in my eyes
1 -
DBD is too big now and it isn't enough to just compete on gameplay, DBD has a wealth of player investment and progression mechanics going on. Keeping the player playing is what DBD does very well.
