Why terror isnt a mechanic ingame?
Im honest when i say this, i been playing for just a couple of weeks, but before that i did watched a lot of streamers play the game (wich was the reason i started to play miself), so i have a basic ide of how the game works. Killers chase survivors, survivors try to survive.
Both sides have a lot of perks and add ons that "add" flavor to the game, but im not here to talk about that specifically. What i want to talk about its that the tittle says, why Terror itself isnt a gameplay mechanic?.
In all horror movies much of the whole point about it is terror, survivors being chassed around and little by little (or faster depending on the character) they start to sucumb to the terror of this entity chasing them, making them fumble, scream and simply go insane in some form.
Now my question is...why terror isnt a general mechanic given to killers?, in all seriousness that an unstopable entity is chassing you, and no matter what you do, you wont hurt it, you wont kill it, at best you will slow it down a bit before you luckily escape the area or inevitably die...so why isnt a thing?.
By having a "Terror" metter on survivors the game would take an interesting turn i belive, the more the killer chases you, the more you should be close to simply sucumb to the terror, fumbling and falling down to the ground, sliping while trying to jump over a fence, screaming to this thing to get away and so on. I already can se survivor mains saying this is horrible, but quite honestly it would be an interesting mechanic wich at the same time would be a good counter to those horrible lop areas that are just meent to waste killers time with NO repercusion, this would also invite a lot more teamplay from the survivors, as they would have to rotate themselves on the chase in order to not be terryfied all the time (wich should be a thing).
This is tought just a concept and not a full blown idea (wich i been tinking for a while so i might try to design and offer at some point on the proper forum), but i feel it would make for an interesting topic to discuss

If it were a part of the game, DbD would not be the same game. It's honestly as simple as that.
We do have something called the "Terror Radious", aka the heartbeat, or the proximity music.

It’s a core mechanic in F13th but there it can be very annoying. Random stumbling isn’t just dumb

Because this isn't a horror game. The terror radius is already menacing enough by itself.
Adding a whole new mechanic would change the game too much

Yes and no, killers Teror Radious its basically an alarm for survivors to start running or hide, wich from a "movie" persective given the game makes total sense, but in the same way why "terror" itself doesnt play in the same equation?...just like in the movies people will slip and make mistakes, breath faster and louder, scream, knock of something revealing themselves, my point is that the presence of the killer near you should also have an impact on the survivors even if you (the killer) isnt looking at them directly, Take it as an example for the xenomorph from the alien saga, he cant se you, but his mere presence terrorises you so much you will end making a mistake to let the chase begin, i belive this would be a very interesting mechanic for both sides, survivors and killers, but thats of course my personal opinion

The devs explained it years ago. They don't want the characters to get scared, but rather the player. A terror mechanic, as seen in other games, is an artificial way to say "hey, you should be scared now".

Automatic loss of control wouldn't be fun in my opinion. That takes a lot of skill away from the game.
Have you seen the doctor killer though? His power is based around infecting survivors with madness.

With 5 years under its belt, it's WAY too late for such a core mechanic to be implemented into the game. It would change what DbD is, and I can guarantee you that many people would leave over it. Possibly myself included.
I recall that in an interview with one or more key members of the dev team, they specifically wanted to emphasise what the player felt opposed to what their character felt. It makes for far more natural decision making.
Would it be cool? I guess? It doesn't have a place in Dbd, however. Not anymore.

Because with the state of the game now, and the way the power is shifted towards survivors, the only ones who'd get the terror mechanic would be the killers. I can see it now, load in as Trapper and come face to face to face to face with a 4 man deathsquad, all dressed as bloody Megs, holding flashlights. Yeah, that'd make any killer shriek in terror...

It wouldn't be interesting for the killers since they wouldn't be doing anything different, and would just be annoying for survivors since they would be getting punished just because they are playing the game.

F13: The Game had something similar to this and from my memory it got pretty annoying.
There's also the problem that it'd incentivize tunneling if it didn't decrease over time or when you were hooked or something, since the killer would want to go after the survivor with the most terror.

Dbd has survived for 5 years without this mechanic whilst all other games within this genre have flopped for various reasons, some with the mechanic and some without. Why should dbd change their core gameplay loop ever when it's proven time and time again to be the only one that works.
