Opinions on the new character portraits?
What's everyone's opinion on the new character portraits? Ill be honest, Nea, Quentin, Feng and Kate's are all good, they look good but David and Jake. No.
I get they wanted David to look like he got into a fight and has a swollen face, but to me he looks more like he is trying to be a squirrel and stuffing his cheeks full of nuts.
And Jake looks like a 40 year old wearing a really bad, cheap wig from ebay that is falling off his head. I don't feel like they have done Jake and David justice at all in their portraits.
But this is just my, whats everyone else?

Jake's looks excellent (no bias), Quentin and Nea look good, Feng looks alright, but they did David and Kate absolutely dirty.

I think Jake and Feng look fine. David and Quentin look weird.
Why does Kate always get screwed? Most of the other characters have their mouths closed, and she should, too. She looks like she has a pug nose and buck teeth. And her hair looks plastic, like she's a McFarlane action figure. Kate's current live portrait is much better.
Someone at BHVR really hates my girl Kate and management needs to put her in better hands. Not even joking.
Edit: Is it a pug nose? I dunno, she certainly has a bit of the rabbit look going on, though. And her hair isn't just plastic-looking, it's also plastered to her forehead. Yuck.
When put right next to his previous profile pic, Quentin looks good. But if you look at it with no comparison, just standalone, it looks weird. BHVR really has a habit of designing long faces, it's not good.

They look incredibly out of place and awkward. Sort of an uncanny valley effect going on here imo.

Holy crap they look awful. Jake and Quentin look good, Nea is pretty meh, but oh my god what did they do with Feng and David? They look like they got run over by a truck.

Jake's is great, Nea's and Quentin's are good, and David, Feng, and Kate's look like they're ripped straight from the game. But holy David looks horrible, his render was great already.

Looks like they've grabbed the actual 3D models to pose them for a raw screenshot, instead of natively rendering them like with the old portraits.
Those are directly in-game screenshots I took personally in the PTB. It indeed looks like that in-game, if you were having doubts.

I think the problem from what I can tell is that they're just using screenshots of the character models with weird lighting over them as opposed to renders with a filter over them. It's really obvious when you look at the hair.

That's just my uninformed assumption. I'm no character artist or 3D modeller, so I'm just going off my limited knowledge of how it works.
I may be wrong entirely.

Everytime I see an update on David can't help but ask: Do the devs hate David King?
He was screwed once with his updated model, and now this portrait he looks like he has been attacked by bees! Whoever did this to him was trolling hard and the worst part is that it make it to the BETA, hopefully won't make it to the live version of the game.

They look incredibly out of place and just overall bad. It looks like the character's new faces were badly photoshopped on top of the old ones.

The old ones have a more artistic feeling towards them while the new ones is looking like they just took a picture of their models.

Think Oni and Shape could use a fresh one. Shape looks like he's made of wax and Oni looks way better in calm mode.

Said this on another thread, I'm not a fan. David and Kate are just terrible. Jake makes me think of Kris Jenner bundled up in a blanket. Feng looks like she's wearing a huge wig. Quentin looks like he's fading he's so light.

Its out of place when compared to the other survivors portraits

They look like 3D models with weird lighting, and not actual portraits. I much prefer the consistency of all the older ones, even if their faces are now different.

I think all the characters look like bad photoshop jobs. David looks especially rough, but the hair on ALL the survivors look like it was added to the head and not actually on it-like a bad wig. Nea only escapes that look because of her hat. Also, the clarity is poor and the portraits look grainy and faded.

Im mixed about them... they just look very weird next to some of the other portraits and I just cant put my finger on what it is...

Jake looks Horrendous.
Nea looks okay, could have done better though.
Fengs face looks better but her hair just seems far worsr.
David looks 15 years older...
Kate looks stupid.

I think the new portraits look terrible. They look so out of place in comparison to the others and don't fit the current art style. It looks like someone got photoshop for the first time and really wanted to try it out.

Where does the “uncanny valley” reference come from?

It's not a reference really, more of a saying used to describe things that appear close to human, but are just "off" enough to provoke an awkward or unsure feeling about them. As an easy example, sophisticated robots can cause this sort of reaction.

David looks bloated and nothing like David, Kate looks she had way too much plastic surgery, Quentin looks made of wax, Jake looks way too "CoD main characterish" if thats even a term, Nea eyes look weird, Feng is ok.

They keep ######### up David for some reason. He looked like a guy whose been in one too many bar fights. Now looks like he's been fighting hornets nests.

I love Jake’s and Quentin’s new portraits. Kate’s is strange, she looks pretty but it’s like warped or distorted or something. Idk I can pinpoint it, but something’s off. Feng and David are significantly worse too.

I actually really like them (except Feng, they did her dirty) But they don't fit in with the other portraits at all. If they change all the others then yeah I like them.

I don't like them. I'd rather have portraits that look like paintings, like acrylic. These look like they were just done by someone trying out filters on GIMP.

Oversaturated, low contrast, low resolution - they're "primary school, first project" levels, with some being done poorly enough as to seem entirely off-model.
