New feature locked behind paywall?
This is my first time posting on here, so forgive me if this has been addressed/answered somewhere before. And maybe there's something I'm missing here.
But this patch gave us boon totems (3, I think), which are now a pretty massive change/addition to the gameplay. And this wildly new change to the matches is only accessible if you buy the new character? So you've introduced a fairly major element to the game that you gotta buy. Idk maybe I'm just being overdramatic but is anyone else put off by this? Seems.. idk, pretty scummy and a very obvious attempt at getting people to buy a new survivor just for her perks which are gonna change the way matches are played from here on out. And one of the perks isn't even available right now lol
Maybe I wouldn't be as upset by this if they had put one or two of the perks also on the shrine to purchase with bloodpoints. But that seems way too rational and generous for this company, I guess.

Didn't you also have to buy the Hag to get hex totems? Or
NemesisPinhead to get scourge hooks?This is no different than any other new element they've introduced to the game.

Mikaela, just like all DBD original characters, is available for purchase through Iridescent Shards, a free currency. So it's not exclusively behind a paywall.
The addition of Boon perks are no different to the addition to Hex perks alongside the Hag, or Obsession perks alongside the Shape, or Scourge perks alongside the Cenobite, or even the extreme differences in gameplay between the various Killers to begin with.
Why is it suddenly an issue that it's a Survivor introducing a new mechanic this time?

...what? Thrill? No, they didn't add "thrill" anything with the hag. All 3 of the hags perks were hexes.

*putting on devils advocate hat* Since she's not a licensed character you can buy her with shards and all you're missing out of in a cosmetic. So technically not behind a paywall, real money is just the quickest way to get her. If you have been playing long enough to be ready for more new mechanics (only 2 perks, one of which is currently turned off because derp) you probably have enough or close to enough shards to unlock her.
I don't know if I'd go so far as to say her perks are going to change the way matches are played from here on out but I get where you're coming from. Still, their employees have to get paid somehow.

Personally, I don't want a boon perk that slows down killers snuffing out a boon totem added to the general pool. Most of the survivor general pool perks suck enough as is.

Every new character and there perks you have to pay for. its what keeps the development of of this game going.

Thats intentional. The grind in this game is CRAZY long and hard intentionally so you spend money unlocking things instead of shards.

All characters have perks. perks do things. mikaela has perks that do things.

I dont think the grind has to do with money. It was worse. before you where only able to get one perk out of the blood web at a time

Of course the grind has to do with money. The amount of time you have to spend to unlock the shards to unlock ONE killer or ONE survivor for a casual gamer is well over a couple of weeks. In addition to many of the best perks in this game ACTUALLY locked behind a cash only wall unless you get lucky and do what? You guessed it, spend shards on the shrine. Want BBQ? Don't want to spend money? Hope that its on the shrine. Oh you unlocked it on the shrine. Now you cant afford the killer you wanted to unlock.

Iridescent shards are not a paywall. Auric currency is, which is not required for this new game content

Boon Totems don't really impact the core gameplay of the game. If nobody brings a Boon perk they won't even exist, just like Hexes. It's completely fine for them to stay behind a paywall.

Hex: Thrill of the Hunt was added for free in Patch 1.3.1, two days after the Hag released in Patch 1.3.0.
Indeed you couldn't. Iridescent Shards were used exclusively for the Shrine of Secrets until June 2018, where the in-game Store was introduced during the second anniversary Chapter release.
Even then, you could still get her perks on the Shrine during that time, and they did pop up.
I just looked through the Shrine's history, and each of the Hag's three perks showed at least five times each between her release (December 2016) and the Store's release (June 2018).

So then people just need to wait til her perks get onto the Shrine. Got it.
*edit - I mean that's what they did with Hag right? Made you wait til the perks got into the shrine if you didn't want to buy her? So I don't see much difference here. Heck, you actually have MORE options here than you did with Hag.

if that was the case wouldn't bhvr just make it so you just purchase a all perks that would automatically unlock all perks for all survivors and killer, and avoid the grind all together. I haven't seen that in the store yet. Iridescent shard can be used to buy both non licensed killers and survivors. You don't need bbq to be a good killer. i only use it when i want for blood points. The same as WGLF.

I thought hag was free since launch, but I guess she wasnt. I also assumed Mikeala would have been free like some other killers and survivors, but I was wrong so whatever.

You can get her with shards but you need a lot of hours worth of xp for 9k shards.
They really should ease up on the shard grind. People complain about bp but shards are much more ridiculous.

What free killers and survivors? The only "free" killers and survivors were the ones that came with the base game: Trapper, Wraith, Hillbilly, Dwight, Meg, Claudette, and Jake. Every other one dropped as DLC, originally.

Well when I began playing all I know is hag was already unlocked, then later on huntress was also free 🤷. That's all I'm saying, so I was surprised to see that hag wasn't free when released.
I was even surprised when I saw hunterss because I had no idea who that was I was downloaded her from the store.
But seriously my memory isn't the best for somethings.

I looked into it more, and apparently, the Nurse and Huntress DLCs were free, though I swear I remember paying for them when they were released. So, there's some Mandela effect or something going on with my brain. Those were the only two free chapters.
Technically, though, Mikaela is free. The only thing you get from purchasing her via the DLC is an extra shirt. They'll never make a free DLC again, as they have iridescent shards to make all original content free in the in-game shop.

Technically most the game is behind a paywall already. You have to pay for the dlc killers packs separately. You can still play against the characters on the opposing side I think but you have to buy them to play as them.

I think what landromat meant was that technically you didn't need to buy Hag to equip a hex perk when she was released because the Devs added thrill of the hunt as a general and therefore free hex perk at roughly the same time. So if you only wanted to test a Hex you could use Thrill without having to buy Hag.
I also don't think that the Situation with the Boom totems is that bad, but it is a little different to Hag's Situation.

I personally think the Boon perks are a tad too powerful.
Circle of Healing at +100% is very strong and could still be a powerful perk at just +50%.
Meanwhile Shadow Step conceals both scratch marks and auras. It could get away with being either one of those.
You could split Shadow Step into two different Boon perks, and one of those could be generic.

That's tricky when you want to actually pay the people who have been designing all the new killers and survivors that have come out in the years since the game released originally. Seriously, I'd get it if these were characters that were made with the game, but each new killer and survivor represents so much time that was put in by the design and development teams, why shouldn't they be paid for their work?

I have not played much lately and also haven't bought Mikeala yet, so I can't really judge how good the boon totems are, but I like your idea of general boon perks.

And you can buy it with Shards, so what paywall are you talking about?
