Why do Killers always know when someone is in a Locker?
I very rarely see the Killer search a Locker and not find anyone in it, unless they were fooled by Deception. It seems like almost every time someone hides in a Locker in an effort to hide from the Killer (not counting doing it to avoid aura reading,) they will almost always find them. This has been the case for years now, ever since I started playing this game.
Now sometimes it's obvious that someone is in one, like if they randomly vanished mid-chase, if you're checking a partially repaired generator and find nobody around and the Lockers are the last place to check, or if you were simply close enough to hear them enter the Locker, as the doors are ironically loud.
I have legit seen Killers randomly check a Locker someone was in, with 0 evidence that anyone was even remotely nearby. This includes both myself and other players. Here are a few examples:
- One time I was on a gen with another Survivor, I knew Ghost Face was coming, so I hid in a locker using Quick & Quiet. He was still quite a distance away and did not see, or hear me enter it. Then he started to chase the other Survivor I was on the gen with, and caught them. But instead of picking him up, he immediately turned towards the Locker I was in and ran straight for it, pulling me out. I was extremely angry as he had no reason to think I was in there, he didn't even check the area first, just immediately turned to my Locker as if he knew. No, it wasn't I'm All Ears, as Quick & Quiet counters that.
- This was just about a week ago. My friend and another guy were the last 2 Survivors remaining, and the other guy was about to get hooked. My friend entered a Locker to avoid BBQ. Yes, he entered it in time, as he was already fully in the Locker when the guy was hooked. However, the Killer immediately came his direction despite the distance, and there was no chance he saw him either as the map was Lery's. He came right in the room his Locker was in, looked around for a few seconds, and opened the Locker, pulling him out. He was injured, but also had Iron Will, and there was no blood pools nearby for the Killer to see.
- I once hid in a Locker in the basement of the small one story house on Haddonfield while the Killer was out in the road. He somehow knew I was down here and came down, and checked the Locker I was in, despite no evidence of my presence. There was no partially repaired generator down there that would've made it obvious.
I literally used to run an entirely stealth-related perk build, and hid in Lockers a lot just to see how often I would get found. Even with no evidence of my presence, I got found very, very often. And no, I never had idle crows in any of those situations, nor did I sprint to the Locker, and they were never close enough to hear the extremely muffled breathing.
So tell me... even with no evidence of someone nearby, how do Killers ALWAYS know???

There is a muffled breathing sound you can often hear as a indicator its not readily obvious but it often does give away that someone is in a locker
11 -
They do this even if they are not close enough to hear it. If they walked right next to it, I understand, but in most cases, they were not close enough to hear it, or I had Iron Will and was injured, which removes breathing sounds.

There's a muffled breathing sound, there's a small visual indicator for some survivors, and when I find someone it's pretty often because scratch marks abruptly stop or because there's a pool of blood right outside the locker they jumped into.

^ read this plz, thx.

That was posted while I was typing lol
Honestly, usually you can just guess. Maybe they had some aura reading you weren't aware of that told them you were generally nearby and they happened to get the right locker first time, that's happened to me before.
2 -
I've noticed this a lot when facing Nemesis. To the point that after one match I tried to look up if he has aura reading basekit or something. I had a Nemesis, who was in a chase with another survivor come across the map and open my locker specifically in a 4 locker bank. I was using Inner Strength, but I had already been healed. It had been way long enough that blood would disappear (I stayed in the locker after I healed because Nemesis was in a chase that lead right around me). He stopped chasing the injured survivor, came right to my locker and bam.
Some Killers just get a hunch. I was accused of 'hacking' before when playing Killer because I just got this feeling, for no reason whatsoever that someone was in a locker (with NO prompting, no signs) and I was right.
But how many times can that happen? lol
With cheats rampant lately, I wonder if some are using aura-reading hacks. But I'll never know.

I get that, and that may have been the case in a few situations. However, I can tell you that many were not like that.

I actually had to explain to a group today that Legion in frenzy shows you exactly where they are by the heartbeat even inside lockers, if I see the heartbeat even if my frenzy runs out I tend to head to the lockers nearby if they mysteriously vanish from the area since survivors rarely like to abandon their gens.
5 -
None of these situations were with a Legion in frenzy, so that's not the case.

Even utilizing the slow animation, the locker and the survivor still make an audible and distinct noise to the listening killer ear. If you can hear it, the killer can too. There’s been a number of times someone’s tried to get inside a locker near me and given themselves away.

I can't really explain it, but sometimes it just feels right. If you're injured, you're probably leaving a pool of blood at the base of the locker - dead giveaway. I'll never NOT check a locker if I see a pool of blood underneath it. There have been times where I hook someone with bbq and I see someone across the map going into a locker, so I go straight to them and check lockers which usually works. If I'm a stealth killer, sometimes I'll see someone sneak off a gen and go into a locker, probably because spine chill is lighting up. Problem is, I literally watched them get in the locker, so...
Other times I'm just trying to reload my friggin hatchets

Read the whole post. I said they weren't close enough to hear the breathing. You have to be almost up against a Locker to hear breathing of someone in it. Also, in some situations, I was injured but also had Iron Will. In that case, I would not have been making any breathing. There was never any blood pools leading to it either.

Regarding your first example- did he have Discordance? If he knew that multiple survivors were on that generator, starting to check lockers is a pretty reasonable decision to make.
It's hard to really say for some of these since we're lacking some information like which killers are played, what perks they were running, etc.
1 -
If they were above you within reasonable distance they also could have heard the locker door open/close because regardless of dashing in or not a killer listening can still hear it even if they dont get the noise indicator.
3 -
Reread mine bud. Did I mention breathing? You’d be surprised how far away you can hear the locker door opening and closing.
3 -
I have had situations like this as killer and been accused of hacking at least 3-4 times for it. Actually had one very similar to the ghostface one that was due to lack of scratch marks in a small area after discordance went off. Knew there were two people, only saw/downed one, and then found the other chilling in the only locker by that loop.
This also happens a lot near partially completed gens, or sometimes if the second to last person is on hook and isnt being saved I will check basement sometimes and it is always funny to find them in the first locker you check in basement.

Oh, I thought you meant the breathing, my bad.
But in that case, most of these situations were with me using Quick & Quiet, which does still make a small sound, but again, the Killer was never close enough to hear this. I do not hide in Lockers like that if the Killer is close enough to hear it.

Quick & Quiet.
Yes that does still make a small sound, but it's not nearly as audible, and again, I often did it far enough to where they would not hear it.
0 -
That's a fair explanation, but I do not remember if he was using that perk or not. I'm not sure if that would explain why he instantly ran for the Locker though and didn't even check the area first.
0 -
Well you can't know how many times they search a locker with no one in it.
2 -
As I said, I didn't do this near partially repaired gens, as that is much too obvious.
0 -
I'm going off how often I see them do it. And trust me, they almost never do.
0 -
It's just a snap decision, you either check the area or you check the lockers- maybe he figured that since he didn't see you working on the generator and didn't see you running, there's a decent chance you were in a locker. Sometimes a guess pays off, y'know?
2 -
Lately it's been crows giving away locker buddies. They behave differently if someone's inside, and near 100% of the time I see a crow's animations glitch I know a nearby locker's got someone in it.
Frankly, the breathing, potential due to scratch marks, the crows, it's a lot of little things that add up to someone being found - plus, there's a desync in the game: just because you or your friend saw the door close in time doesn't mean it will have on the killer's screen.
3 -
It seems far too common to always be a guess.

I am with this person, honestly without more context to what killers, what perks, what maps, and what areas its really hard to pin down what is going on. Plenty of things give away survivor locations even without aura's, an experienced killer can use whispers to triangulate where you are, legion frenzy, a lot of killers also play survivor and know the tactics one would use since the average survivor seems to rarely ever abandon a gen, and while it may be inaudible to you I can say with certainty if you can hear my terror radius I can probably hear your locker. Could really be any number of reasons.
1 -
None of those explanations explain my situations, as I always did it in non-obvious situations, while still a decent distance from the Killer, and with Quick & Quiet, which greatly muffles the Locker entry sound.
0 -
Breathing sound, footsteps disappear next to a gen getting worked or just they disasppear, general good map sense, lockers even when slowentering them make a noise that can be heard.
1 -
Please read the whole post. I explained that none of those were the case.
0 -
All of those explanations can potentially explain your situation on their own, and when combined they just make you and yours being found more likely.
Crows can reliably be seen glitching up to 30m away. The breathing from lockers can be heard from up to 15m away, if you boost your sounds. Quick & Quiet does nothing about scratch marks, breathing, or crows, and scratch marks are visible at even greater distances, while Q&Q also doesn't account for a visual desync where the killer simply saw you enter the locker.
0 -
I don't sprint to the Locker, that's far too obvious. However, bugs or desync could possibly explain some of the situations.
0 -
There are an infinite number of reasons that a killer may want to search a locker, up to and including, "feeling like it."
If it's happening to you often enough to make a thread about it, shoot down every possibility given to you, and claim there is always 'no evidence,' you should really re-evaluate your locker usage.
3 -
If you're not sprinting to the locker, Q&Q may also not be activating - it only affects rushed locker interactions.
0 -
Also perks like Stridor that make breathing louder, hex undying if there happened to be a totem near that locker set, or even the fact a killer might have saw someone run to that area but had a clear view on the way over that no one left the area (trust me some locker sets are just suicide to use) plenty of reasons that would make me check lockers.
There literally is a ton of ways perks or otherwise to tell someone went to the lockers so really not sure what to say beyond that.
0 -
"How can the killer see me when I'm so well hidden? Must be hacking". Man the amount of times that i've been accused of cheats because i've opened a locker by chance or i heard their breath in my neck...
2 -
Sometimes it's really just a hunch.
1 -
Example 1.
He could be running discordance and thus knew there were 2 people over there, so would make sense to check the locker.
Example 2. Could be he saw your friend running there or seen scratchmarks when carrying the downed survivor or a gen was close there and he just looked in the locker to be sure.
Or he could've run whispers and thus knew someone was there and checked the locker.
Example 3. He could have been using the perk territorial imperative.
Or to say it simple, that perk shows your aura to the killer if they're 32m away from the basement.
Thus he could see you going in and thus makes sense to check the lockers.
You see, there are several options where they could know or have a rough idea where to look.
Edit: and then you have this example where i was accused of hacking by the last 2 survivors, even though it makes sense they were there.

I usually have Killers checking lockers around where I'm at, so it's no surprise if they check your locker if they know you're in the area. Most of the time, that's the first place I look myself if I'm playing Killer. When I'm playing Survivor however, I usually walk behind obstacles rather than hide in lockers, and I instead watch the Killer open every locker in the area but to no avail.
I will say that I actually got jumpscared last night when I went to refill my knives as Trickster. Opened the locker and there was a Meg inside! I had no idea she was there, so she probably thought I was hacking or something... 😛

To hear a healthy survivor breathing in a locker you have to be fairly close. Does not explain going cross map and instantly checking a locker.
IW while injured makes no sound.
0 -
I go to replenish my knives and I've pulled so many survivors out of the locker instead. I'm surprised as well.
Other times I go check because I've seen crows fly up from a distance and can't find anyone, see scratches, see a pool of blood, hear breathing, have whispers proc and check thoroughly or get a lucky guess.
2 -
Sometimes it's intuition. You just feel like there's someone in a locker.
Or it can be deduction. You get to a gen, it's had enough progress on it since you last checked it that more than one person was on it. You see one survivor sprinting away in the distance, you know where another two survivors currently are. The one left is the Jake, who you chased earlier. His first instinct when he saw you then was to try and hide instead of running to a window or pallet. So - he's nearby crouched behind some object or in a locker.
Also like others have said, muffled breathing, blood pools, scratch marks, lack of auras or screams when certain perks etc activate
Or you're a huntress or trickster and you genuinely thought it was empty. Lots of legit reasons.

I play 50/50 so i also thing as a surv, like, where would i go.
Little details like, i have discordance, there where 2 people in that gen and i only saw 1 run away/scratch marks, so there is at least one surv around here.
You reach a gen that its advanced and you dont see scratch marks, so no one runs from here, someone its close.
If you have BBQ or reading aura perks, you can see where people are, if you go into a zone that you spect 2 survs and only see 1, the other is hiding.
The point its, i already know/spect there is someone here and i dont see scratch maks, there is a good chance its hiding.
Also if you focus, you can hear the breath of injured survivors inside (apart from the blood pool).

These are the things that make me check lockers:
- I know a gen was just being worked, but there are no scratch marks around in. (They walked to the closest locker)
- Whispers is lit, but nobody screamed from Doctor’s static blast.
- Someone used Head-On earlier, so they have a disposition toward locker usage.
- Someone used Quick & Quiet earlier, and the trail of scratch marks ended.
- Survivors run in straight lines, throw every pallet, and don’t look behind them. Newbie = locker (usually)
- I heard the same person scream from Iron Maiden twice, so I know there are repeat locker users in the game.
- I reloaded at a locker and their unexpected face scared me more than I scared them!
1 -
I mean for new players it don’t help that the tutorial tells you to vault in a locker like that don’t give the killer a noise notification
0 -
Sometimes they cheat. I've had them walk all the way across the map to me when I am healthy. I also think because of lag bbq and chili sometimes gives away your location even if you got in the locker in time

In the first example, Ghost Face knew there was more than one survivor working on the gen. He obviously noticed you didn't run past him, downed your teammate and checked lockers in the vicinity of the gen.
The second example is a deduction via process of elimination. BBQ reveals auras outside a certain radius. If it doesn't reveal an aura, it means a survior is either close by or in a locker. Killer would scan the immediate area, and beeline to the distance required for BBQ then search nearby lockers.
The third example is a hunch based off that being a popular spot to hide.
1 -
Mister know it all, I press shift when I get to the Locker to use Q&Q.
0 -
Considering your dismissal of people offering rational explanations for one of the easiest actions in the game (locker grabs), I imagine most people 'know it all' comparatively.
0 -
About example 2, he wasn't running. That's not it. However, Whispers could explain it, but I find it odd that he'd check that 1 specific Locker, as 32 meters is a pretty big range.
Example 3, I said basement of the small one story house, not THE basement. Difference.

Of note: there's a fade-out of the aura for lockers. Catching the tail end of that can be all you need.
