My new killer mindset

So I’ve been playing this game since 2017 and one thing I loved to do for both survivor and killer was get to rank 1 after every rank reset which sometimes resorted in me having to play extremely focused / sweaty, especially on the killer side of things. With time this became tiresome and it started to suck the fun out of my games, especially after the implementation of MMR.

So now, whenever I’m playing killer I remove every gen regression perk and focus more on chase perks or perks to try to meme around with to see if I can get certain combinations to work in my favour. This has removed all of my killer stress and I no longer prioritise getting a 4K over my own enjoyment.

Last night I played as Deathslinger on Gideon Meat Plant using M&A, Sloppy, Nurses and Franklin’s and I actually ended up getting a 3K. It just happened organically and felt so nice. I just don’t want to feel stressed out when playing games. I’m here for the fun.

Has anybody else adjusted their play style since MMR?

Mb u can explain me why were u so obsessed with MMR?

Nothing changed for me. Sometimes I win, sometimes I don't. My build is made for me having fun, not for survivors.

I never said I was obsessed with MMR? But like a lot of killers, my matches since MMR were just constantly sweaty where I would have to be able to end chases really fast and pressure generators to even stand a chance at ‘winning’ - and I couldn’t be bothered with always having to try really hard to ‘win’ so now I just use whatever perks I want to use and if I win, I win. But I’m not bothered by the outcome anymore. My main goal is to have fun.

I feel the same way to be honest. I do still hook survivors, but it doesn’t feel like my main goal anymore. I just want to see what cool downs I can get and discover new perk combos. Last night was one of the most fun nights I’ve had playing killer. It honestly removed so much of the unnecessary stress. I just don’t care if I get a 4K or a 0K anymore.

I don't know if this is a question only for killers but I want to answer anyways lol

When mmr first came out I ended up changing my perks to UB, DS, Tenacity, Adrenaline just for a crumb of maybe escaping (I know over kill... And boring at least for me) THEN I heard that mmr was based of escapes so after a month+ long break I changed it to auras only build (alert, kindred, empathy, dark sense) or my favorite "foot fetish" (sprint burst, fixated, Shadow step, dance with me) Hard tunneled or camped with no crutch perks? I'm for the most part okay with it, let my MMR go down.

(I am not suggesting I am high MMR however I am assuming based off of my games when it was first introduced and up until I changed my builds to "fun" it was a nightmare. I may have the hours but I'm a filthy casual)

The soloq mentality has been for ages to not care about escapes. I see a convergence between that and what the op says. Mmr finally made this community united. Hilarious.

    Bangarang Member Posts: 352

Of course you can answer! I also play survivor but I find survivor to mostly be a chilled experience and I’m constantly using meme builds there and still escaping. I did a match last week using No Mither and Self-Care and ended up escaping with 30K lol. This is why I mostly chose to talk about killer, as I’ve always found it to be a more stressful role and I wanted to take the stress away and just have fun.

    Bangarang Member Posts: 352

I’m the same in soloq, my main goal is to get as many BP as I can and have fun. I’m not too fussed about whether I escape through an exit gate or hatch. That’s just not a realistic goal to have when you’re playing with randoms.

I never cared about Ranks or Grades, let alone the hidden MMR I can’t even see. I just try and hook and kill as many survivors as I can.

I also don’t grind for specific perks and add-ons on specific killers. Aside from opening up all four perk slots I just do one web per match (unless I’m spending more because I’m at the cap) and run with what I’ve got. And I prestige at level 50 to shake things up again. So I’m not stressing over meta builds, etc.

Always better to play for the chase. If you hook you only get called a camper anyway, no matter where you are on the map when they are hooked and die on it.

Just have fun, that is what games are made for. Its entertainment.

The limited killer games I do play lately, I’ve dropped ruin / pop from all my builds. Corrupt intervention + meme perks / fun and I’ve been 4K a lot of my games as of late.

that was basically always how I played.

I've always played for fun, for archives, and for scares.

I haven't adjusted my play style, but I've never cared about 4K. I mean why sweat not getting a 4K? It just means I'm facing players better than me. Or they have better equipment than I do in an asymmetrical game. It happens. I'm not going to lose my killer card over a 4-man escape or two.

No gen defence perks except for Corrupt and Deadlock. It's literally not work the perk investment to regress gens. Just delay the gens as much as you can and hope the survivors throw the game and actually give you kills.

I've been trying out different killers/endgame builds because of it/nerfs to the twins. It's been rough not having ways to cover distance quickly like using Victor and I've probably become an even meaner killer to survivors in games because of it but that's just how it goes.

It's definitely the way to go. I started on a build that let's me focus solely on practicing Punishment hits. Nemesis/Enduring/All Ears/Nurse's.

There's no point in playing sweaty anymore and I have more fun just focusing solely on improvement.

I've been playing Freddy quite a bit and he excels at protecting generators, but I found that stacking Gen protecting perks was boring and slow for both sides. I recently realized that using an endgame build is way more fun and works quite well on Freddy. Black box with blood warden makes for some funny moments. I don't stress about Gens being done quickly anymore and have fun with the chases I get into. All of those chases give stacks and make me more effective in the endgame. It doesn't even matter to me if the survivors all end up escaping which is great. What matters is that I still have way more fun with this new build overall and I find that to be more important.

Yeah I get that, I'm a dirty survivor main having only dabbled in killer when I'm feeling frisky

It feels so much better to not torture yourself by playing sweaty. Play the way that truly makes you happy. To quote one of my favorite fantasy authors "Journey before destination".

But bleeding them out doesn't count as a kill. I am being segregated against.

I think the poor Meg you left lying broken in a puddle of her own blood and tears would disagree that it didn't count. 😃

You probably do well. You just aren't used to what the new well is.

I prioritized chasing survivors, defending gens is basically my secondary objective. Just wish I could do both and not have to focus on one just to have fun lol

Have you tried out Pinhead? He’s pretty good for that because of his passive ability to attack people on generators with chains. I have a feeling the upcoming killer is going to have something similar too as I feel like we’re heading in a direction of giving killers more passive map pressure…

Your mindset doesnt matter. The game is still an RNG infestation that you can't control and it will screw you or them over. It's impossible to play DbD and have fun because the game doesn't have pre-set parameters. It's Chaos without a purpose.

  • Bangarang
    Bangarang Member Posts: 352

I play both sides and have fun a lot of time, so I don’t agree with your statement.

  • JohnWeak
    JohnWeak Member Posts: 854

Well streamers still playing killers can be count on the 10 fingers of the hands, at any time of the day.

    It means a lot.

It's incredible that BHVR doesn't see it, what do they need to understand ?

    At above average MMR,

    • Playing killer can be resumed by : tunnel/camp if you want to win or get a draw.
    • Playing survivor is like : one of your team will be tunneled and camped.

Is it great ? Not at all.

  • DBD78
    DBD78 Member Posts: 3,469

Yeah I mean I want to avoid high MMR so I also use a lot more "fun" perks and builds, try worse addons etc. Sometimes I also play without perks/addons.

What does any of that have to do with what I said? 👀

Yeah when you finally figure out that you aren't meant to 4k every single round and stop stressing on it, the game feels nice.

You have said that you have fun so you disagree as if it was an universal point of view. Your point of view is what it is but it's an extreme minority feeling this way...

My go to build these days is Lethal BBQ NOED No Way Out.

Point me towards the enemy, and then after that I just rely on BBQ the whole match.

I like this build because it let's me adjust my sweat levels. If I am simply too much for the survivors and I'm landing every Tentacle, I'll ease up so we can all get BP, and I have the peace of mind of having Killer Insurance with No Way Out and Noed.

It's not realistic to expect to not have the exit gates powered in the majority of your matches. And there's no shame in anticipating and preparing that either. It's a natural state of the game.

I'm a human being with feelings and emotions too. It's not realistic to expect me to happily swallow a 0k where nothing fun or interesting happened all match.

For now I'm content trying to 8 hook everybody and aiming to only eliminate survivors after the gates are powered. Key word "try", some maps are just too big or annoying to 8 hook...

No I didn’t say it was a universal POV, I said it was my own POV. I have fun playing as both killer and survivor. Simple. It wasn’t really something that needed debating…

I'd rather uninstall than play as pinhead 😅

I'm not a fan of basic killers I more prefer anti loop because they're more fun. Pinhead is just super boring for my personal preferred playstyle.

Yeah I love playing silly builds or even no-perk builds. It removes the expectation that you will win, so losing doesn't feel bad at all. But when you do win, you know it is through skill (or survivor mistakes I guess..)

Lately I've been playing Demo with just STBFL, and Huntress with Lethal Pursuer + Iri Head going for 8 second downs

Yup. I started a few months ago, got a few team kills, a momento mori. Got trolled a lot. Then i decided to just mess with survivors, put on a show, scare the hell out of them. They loved it. Some call it farming but im not. its the best fun. I dont care bout points now. Havnt killed for a while, only hook torch spammers and twirkers as a warning. They usually stop. This means i mostly match with low skill survivors but i just give them a good scare. I make my curtain call at the gate and am swamped by nods and offerings. If the killer is not in character whats the point, just go play roblox or something soft. This is the best horror game.

I do similar things! I haven’t played much Huntress so I’ve been practising with her recently and I’m doing no add-ons and no perks so that I can get a true feel for how she plays. I’ve been loving some of the hatchet hits I’m able to get, but I definitely need practise as I sometimes aim too high or too low. 😂

This is why SM Myers is still one of my favourites to use. I just love hitting a survivor and knowing they probably jumped out of their skin. He just brings such a true horror atmosphere to DBD. I don’t expect to 4K with that add-on, but it’s still incredibly fun to use.

I'd recommend using a target overlay tbh. Some of her long range shots are basically impossible without one. You can think about taking the overlay off when you've mastered the timing and spacing of both the slow and fast hatchet shots.

Also don't forget that the dipping/slow shots can be great going over certain loops and also catching survivors out if you mix them in with the fast shots

I have fun as killer, maybe you need a different mindset.

Haven't really changed the way I play at all. I bring whatever perks I like, though that often includes some slowdown, usually Jolt or Thrilling Tremors, Corrupt if I have a setup killer.

Sometimes I get steamrolled by survivors, but often I get at least a 3K, whether that's because they legit got away or I decided to let the last one go.

Killer for me has been fine under MMR. It's survivor I have issues with. Too many survivors play selfish now they know all they have to do is escape. Hook farming, leaving me to die on first hook, hiding in the corner until that hatch spawns. Not every game but more than it used to be.
