So who's read the book?
Anyone read the original Ring novel by Kōji Suzuki?
Without too many spoilers, How was it and how does it compare to the two movie adaptions?
I'm going to be giving this a read soon, to familiarise myself with the original content; so I'd like to know other people's thoughts on it.

so ok, i understand you want to know more about the Ringo because this is gonna be a new "chapter" of dbd. I used to be like this too. getting excited about pinhead or silent hill.. rewatching the movies. but at the end of they day, once this killer is released you barely see him, or the map associated with him. from a surivvor point of view it gets boring quickly. i don't know they just add so many killers and -carton board- survvivors, that the effect is wearing off and the hype is quickly gone. they just keep to their original chapter release every few months but it's just not cutting it for me anymore.

I read the book as a kid after watching Ringu, and again a few years ago. I think it's one of the rare times I think the movies are better than the books.
Ringu specifically (and The Ring by proxy) made a very, very wise decision to remove a fairly big thing in the book that happens towards the end. Don't want to start an argument on it on a forum because I feel like it's divisive, but it's borderline problematic, so I guess just be mindful?
In either case, the rest of the book is fine. A few differences between major plot points/character personalities & background (other than what I hinted at above). The translation is also DREADFULLY dry and boring, but I can't tell if that is a problem with the source material or not. For reference - if you read any of Constance Garnett's translations of Dostoevsky's novels, you might get what I mean. The atmosphere and terror feels.. lacking compared to the movies because of it.

This is not as helpful a post as it could be as I think a lot of people aren't going to have context of anything outside of the films.
Like I didn't even know it was a book/light novel to begin with.

Indeed. I don't/didn't want to spoil for people who have not read the books, it gets tough when trying to say something about a book compared to a movie without spoiling it, especially with how distant the movie(s) are in many different ways from the book. I'd be willing to talk about it in a private message or something to get more in-depth about things, though. I think in general terms my comment on the translation/atmosphere is really all I can say without giving much away.

I haven't read it, but I kind of want to now. And that's saying something because I cannot keep focused on something like reading a book. 🙃

It does appear that there is a translated version in English.
To be honest, I never knew about the book til the chapter announcement - so it'll be interesting to read the original work that led to such a widely known movie.

I've found a free preview on Google Books for the translated version and it is a bit mediocre from the little I can tell so far...
Hopefully there's a better translation out there someday

The book is quite different. The main character in the movie/book is different as are most of the secondary characters. The young boy isn’t in the book.
The plot is largely the same, not that that will matter for the game.
Sadako’s backstory is also a little different. I can go into specifics if you want.
