Why original killers should stay "original" and not a homage.
I knew this was going to happen eventually. It happened to the Hillbilly and now the Spirit.
These particular killers were homages to Leatherface and The Ring/Grudge as they bare huge resemblance to each of their lores, aesthetics and powers.
Now DBD probably never knew these licensed characters would make it at the time of the original killers were in development. Who knew THE leatherface and Ringu monster would come to an indie horror game? But lo and behold, it happened and just like how the Hillbilly was given the shaft, I'd wager Spirit and Sadako won't be able to coexist also.
This means, somebody needs to go and from DBD's perspective and they'd rather sacrifice their original killer just to make the licensed one look superior.
That's why I'm saying that original killer should remain original. Imagine if we got a discount knockoff version of Chucky or a Xenomorph and the real thing came around in the near future. Just stick to the Plagues, Blights, Trickster, Doctor and etc.
No more homages, hopefully.

It's not like the Ring is the only story of an onryo to have ever existed, which is what Spirit is, so I don't expect the same sort of nerf. Would be pretty weird for Sadako to have the same sort of power.
It's not like "chainsaw using murderer" where your power choice is quite circumscribed by the identifying feature.

Now I just want Nurse to get a Silent hill Nurse outfit. Wink wink

Leatherface and Hillbilly can easily coexist. Their powers work distinct enough and for a long time Hillbilly was way stronger. His nerf really didn’t have much to do with Leatherface.
For Spirit and Sadako it will probably even less problematic as the powers will probably be even less similar to eachother anyway.
don’t try to find problems where there are none maybe. This game has enough problems, this is not one of them.

I don't see any reason for Spirit's power to have any overlap with Sadako's. While her design is highly influenced by Sadako and Kayako (more the latter with her awful, awful hair) neither have anything to do with zooming around the ghost world at high speed. Sadako is far more likely to rely on some form of curse mechanic, and/or some form of teleport through televisions or wells.
Considering Shattered Bloodline released over 3 years ago, I expect it was at a time where it seemed unlikely to BHVR that they would obtain a license for either of the famous Asian horror girls, and they opted to include Spirit as a spiritual successor to them to provide fans of those series with some form of consolation prize. I'm happy we now get Sadako, but I don't see how it affects or devalues Spirit's place.

Actually they wanted to have leatherface from the start, but couldn't get the license so they had to make the hillbilly instead. Not sure if I'd call that an homage.
3 -
Hillbilly and Leatherface's changes had nothing to do with the fact that the former was an homage to the latter. So even if Spirit does get changed, there's no reason to assume that it'll be because of their similarity.

Did they announced ring killer power will be phasing or something?

I said it once and I'm saying it now: too many licensed killers are bad for the game and take cool designs and easter eggs away from the original concepts. The Artist is the first original Killer that is actually creepy and looks intimidating, compared to the anime disaster we previously had as a non-licensed killer.

idk, spirit and doc are pretty up there in the visually creepy factor

I don't know why you think Billy was nerfed into irrelevancy because of Bubba. Bubba was literally a bottom tier killer for 3 years. They nerfed Billy because of unknown reasons, but Spirit is still very solid.
1 -
Sure both Hilbilly and Bubba have chainsaw as their powers, but they are incredibly distinct from each other. Hilbilly is a high mobility killer with lots of map pressure and the ability to instadown survivors. Bubba can't go nearly as fast or as far, but he has much more control over where he goes. He can also potentially down multiple survivors with one use of his power, which allows him to punish survivors for grouping up. BHVR has shown themselves capable of making powers that are similar, yet distinct. I have confidence that they will manage to make the power for the Ringu killer distinct from Spirit's.

I admit it, I didn't express myself correctly. The Artist finally looks creepy and scary compared to the previous non-licensed killer that is the Trickster. Before licensed killers were introduced, BHVR had plenty of creepy and scary killers, such as the Spirit, the Doctor, the Hag, etc. I wish they dedicated more time to developing original designs instead of looking for new licenses to implement.

The first time I've met Oni... Man, I remember how scared I was. Hearing him from away, "RAAAWR", then seeing him coming to me with his big weapon and the whole red smoke around him...
I agree Trickster isn't as scary as some other Killers tho. But what do you think of Legion? I don't find them scary, except when they wear the Silent Hill bunny costume (but because it reminds me the park from Silent Hill 3).
Maybe Trickster could have been more scary like... Like Huntress can be with her outfits full of raw meat...
1 -
Twins? Blight? Kinda just seems like you are arbitrarily singling out Trickster.
0 -
Billy and Bubba could've easily lived together, but the devs said that there could only be one chainsaw wielding Killer
0 -
Twins don't seem scary, they're just unpleasant and gonkish.

Legion has a rather ridiculous design as well. A mouth-breathing edgy teen with spindly arms and a mask? He would have gotten his face caved in by David King or Jake Park or Meg in an instant. It feels almost insulting to just run away from Frank or anyone from his gang, instead of turning around and slapping them.
How often do you see Twins and Blight in your games compared to Trickster? He wasn't designed to be scary, he was literally made to appeal to the fans of anime villains.

Frequency of Killers in a match has nothing to do with the point you are trying to argue.

The problem with legion and trickster don't being that scary is in there very Natur cause they are your every day gay that just snapped. I think trickstery whole theme of being a musician and a psychopath is nice and they deliver it quite good and I think legions problem is that they are designed as a pack of killers hunting together but thats not possible in dbd atm. I think twisted looking human killers like trapper are nice but I also like simply normal humans cause they are scare aswell Michael and ghosty are normal humans two and they also wear ridiculous outfits but they are classic killers so we learned to fear them I would say when you leave Ghostface reputation out of it he looks even more silly the frank.

If you don't find Legion and Trickster scary, do you find Plague, Ghostface, Deathslinger, Pig, Freddy scary? Becuz all of them are on the same boat: normal humans but crazies.
The Trickster is a nice interpretation of a psychotic killer with a normal appearance. He doesn't even need a mask because his literal face/existence is one. Just because he/she doesn't have a scary mask doesn't mean they don't reflect true horror. Same goes for Legion.
Heck, Pyramid Head isn't scary to me (looks funny actually), but do you see me complaining about him being added and fitting in DBD?

In the Legion's case, it's not even that "they just snapped". They are a gang of teen criminals, who got all giddy about the idea of doing whatever they want without getting punished - and they would have gotten shot by the police if the Entity didn't take them in. They're just evil little shits, who would've gotten what they deserved after coming across someone stronger than an elderly janitor.
Trickster didn't snap as well. He was born a sociopath and he too went only after victims weaker than him. He doesn't have an intimidating presence and height, like Myers and his showman-y look doesn't really help to build an intimidating image. It feels like the only reason he managed to score kills was that he paralyzed his victims prior to killing them, otherwise he would've gotten his pretty face ruined extremely fast. So, running away from him doesn't feel as terrifying as running away from the Oni, Myers, the Hillbilly, the Clown or the Hag - it feels annoying. Why be afraid of the giggling K-Pop singer who never tasted a proper punch and would probably throw a screeching fit after getting hit?
And to be honest, I feel the same way about Ghostface. Never liked his type in the movies.
The Plague isn't just a normal human. Aside from her being extremely tall, she is rotting alive, half-consumed by the disease, oozes dangerous amounts of vomit, and stays alive only because of the Entity. This is disturbing already. The Deathslinger may not be as creepy or scary as the Doctor, but he sure isn't handsome - he looks like a sinister undead from the Wild West.
Freddy is also not a typical crazy human - he is a crazy spirit, a literal dream demon. His human self got destroyed by a mob of angry parents, so now he is more of an incorporeal presence that haunts people and makes it dangerous to fall asleep or even think about Freddy.
I already said what I think about GF, but the Pig is...well, I just hate facing her in trials because I have no love for the entire SAW franchise and Jiggsaw's pretentious games. Therefore, I don't find her scary at all.

Oke legion would probably get shot sooner or later that's true and the same goes for trickster and Michael and trapper and ghosty and every non supernatural being so that point is invalid and I didn't know the mortality of a killer takes part in his scare Faktor. And I find it quite funny how often people talk smack about trickster cause he is a kpop star as if that makes it impossible to kill not every one is a brute and needs to hack and slay but sure let's talk ######### on the guy that is not stereotypical an manly man cause he can't stand a good ol beating from a manly man man

This makes it sound like it's not easy to pinpoint the inspiration for a lot of the original DbD killers. Trapper's design is taken from Jason Voorhees. Doctor is based on Yang Yongxin (and his cosmetics are inspired by A Clockwork Orange and Hellraiser's Cenobites). Wraith is basically Predator. The Artist is Candyman. Trickster is a Korean-flavored Joker. Blight is Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde.
If the devs did a doll killer, who would it definitely take inspiration from? Chucky? Annabelle? Benny? There's no shortage of killer toys.
For the longest time, Hillbilly was better than Leatherface. It was years before the two got updated, and I don't think what happened with Hillbilly was intentional, the devs often mess up the fun factor when tweaking killers. Hillbilly wasn't shafted because of Leatherface but because the devs felt the need to touch his base kit while messing with his add-ons, just like with Nurse.
Spirit, to give her credit, is not a discount Sadako or Kayako. She's an onryo, a specific type of Japanese ghost, which Sadako and Kayoko also are. Spirit's design and powers are unique. A lot of monsters and killers in horror are taken from folklore and urban legends, and so then any monsters/killers based on a particular legend will share similarities.

Out of curiosity, how is Artist inspired by Candyman? According to Pixel Bush, she’s inspired by a real Chilean man of whom I forget the name.
0 -
Candyman is an artist who lost his hand to a group of people. Carmina is an artist who lost her hand (plus other hand and tongue) to a group of people. Candyman has a swarm of bees whereas Carmina has a swarm of crows. You could replace Carmina with Candyman and have the exact same powers, only the details of the lore would change.
Edit: This was not necessarily intentional on BHVR's part, but the similarities are there.

I don't see a problem with homages and similar character.
Because they are added earlier the next chapter is always a 2.0 version with maybe a similar story but improved effects.

Spirit being a Japanese girl’s ghost is I think the only similarity to Sadako from the Ringu. They don’t look alike, Spirit’s weapon is a sword and Sadako is … well, who knows? If Sadako has a teleport it’ll probably be totally different from Spirit’s, and as far as we they they’ll have completely different abilities. And we have zero reason to think one is better or worse than the other at this point.
Also, most of DbD’s original killers aren’t even similar to anybody in particular at all. Wraith, Huntress, Doctor, Deathslinger, Blight, Trickster, Artist, they’re all unique. Trapper and Hillbilly are the ones that were clearly homages, Spirit is at best vaguely similar to The Ring,

Spirit is based off the Onryo, not any horror character in particular. And it's not like Sadako/Kayako are the only stories of an Onryo.
As for the Hillbilly thing, the "scary man with a chainsaw" has been a horror stereotype for a long time. Leatherface is just one of the more known ones.
0 -
Is there any evidence Spirit is specifically based off of either of these famous onryo characters from films and not just based off the Japanese myth of the onryo, a vengeful spirit?
Also a killer I never see get brought up in these "homage" discussions is Blight. Behavior admitted Blight is inspired by Jekyll and Hyde.

No, people are making up scenarios of something that isn't even in the slightest confirmed.
I've personally never thought for a second that whatever Ringu killer they chose would be close to spirit. I always assumed they've have a curse-like power or something dealing with tv/well or possibly even combine the cursing and tv/well.
1 -
Yes, their mortality does add a lot to the scare factor. This is why scary movie characters are either given supernatural abilities that make it impossible or futile to get the police involved (Myers) or shown as extremely cunning and smart or operate in areas where the police is unavailable and protagonists have to count on themselves (Trapper).
Of course, people will talk smack about his design. It's a game about running away from a scary killer, something that should look like you're supposed to run from it. He doesn't have to be a hulking brute. The Hag is a small and thin creature, but she is absolutely terrifying, so nobody wants to get chased by her and nobody even thinks of trying to fight her. Trickster, though? I guess, his stupid pervy giggling is supposed to creep people out, but all I feel when chased by him is an extreme annoyance because it feels like this MF giggles because he knows that players are compelled to run away from him through the power of plot and gameplay, even though he looks like some an OnlyFans model doing the villain challenge.

I mentioned Blight. :*(
And no, I don't think there's anything to suggest Spirit is based on either famous character. She's a typical onryo as far as I can tell.
Even Hillbilly isn't just a discount Leatherface. He also has elements of Wrong Turn/The Hills Have Eyes -type mutants as well as sympathetic lore similar to The Elephant Man. At least, that's what I see.
